Monday 4 th May WALT Design and make your own fan design using Japanese influences Overview: Japan has become known for the quality and beauty of their hand fans. The popularity of the fans spread across Europe through trade and the Silk Road where they were much coveted as decorative art pieces. By the 18th and 19th century, many European women from all social classes carried a folding fan. Today, folding fans are one of the most convenient ways to cool off. Activity: Create a fan from an A4 or A3 piece of paper. Watch the video link below then follow each step carefully. Draw a Japanese inspired picture, Japanese writing or other Japanese image on each side of the paper, leaving the centre strip blank, then fold like a concertina. Don’t forget to staple or stick the 2 sides of your fan together. Take a photo of it and send it to me so that they can be posted on the class blog. It means a prediction of your future! While many people do not believe in being able to predict your future, it is still popular. Japan have their own type of fortune telling. Omikuji ( おおおお ) are Japanese fortune-telling paper strips that can be found at shrines and temples throughout the country. The fortune that one is granted can range from having a great blessing ( おお ) to a great curse ( おお ). Tuesday 5 th May WALT: To make a “Fortune Teller”Overview: Fortune telling is a tradition across many countries. It means a prediction of your future! While many people do not believe in being able to predict your future, it is still popular. Japan have their own type of fortune telling.

Omikuji (おみくじ) are Japanese fortune-telling paper strips that can be found at shrines and temples throughout the country. The fortune that one is granted can range from having a great blessing (大吉) to a great curse (大凶). Look at the following link to learn about them!

Thursday 7 th May WALT: To design or make Japanese Sushi.

Read some of the information in the links below about making Sushi. There are also some links in the resource page below for youtube clips on different ideas.

Then choose one activity below to complete:-

1. Make your own Sushi. If you do not like the ingredients given, make up your own! You can even make fruit sushi as shown in some of the videos!

2. Design your own Sushi. Use the plate template to draw and colour your Sushi. Label the ingredients that you would put in.

3. Make your own Sushi using other materials. For example, you could make it out of rolled up paper for the outside, different colour paper or materials for the inside. You could use cotton wool for the rice for example.

Take a picture of your masterpiece for your workbook and stick it under the date and WALT above.

Friday 8 th May – BANK HOLIDAY - OPTIONAL WALT: To make and use some chopsticks.

Activity: Just for fun, make your own chopsticks! You can make them from skewers, cardboard or tightly rolled paper. Decorate your chopsticks. Then try to eat your dinner with them! Take a picture of you using your chopsticks for your workbook!
