December 2010

Hello everyone,

Well, this is it, my final President’s letter. I must admit that it has been quite a year, from ups and downs to rights and wrongs and workarounds, and I just loved it!

This past year has offered me a wonderful learning experience. I have tried to work with our club theme all year and have personally benefitted in many ways. I certainly hope that you have too.

One never knows what to expect when taking on a new challenge but you learn to roll with the punches very quickly. However, even then you can be caught off guard and must learn how to work around situations until you are back on track. What better way to learn than to jump right in, with both feet, take baby steps, stumble and fall, and get right back up and try again? Every month brings something new and exciting.

At our November 3rd members’ dinner meeting, we had our Annual General Meeting with elections. Sincere thank you and congratulations to our newly elected Board of Directors (see list in the November 3rd, 2010 meeting minutes, in this bulletin). We also had a fun presentation about Norman’s Desk and Derrick Adventures, by our own member, Linda Green. Thank you Linda for the very interesting and equally entertaining presentation! Great job!

It is unfortunate that our Regional Director, Lynne Dunstan, could not attend, but we thank her for sending a message of encouragement to our members.

The ABFDDC and the Calgary Club had separate meetings on November 3rd and both clubs had some heartfelt discussions regarding our experience of working together this year and how we would like to continue as a club going forward. Decisions were made and they will be communicated to the Calgary Club. We are still awaiting the Calgary Club’s decision for the future of their club, as well.

During this past month our Fundraising committee was very busy working on the “Calendar” project, as well as, the “Silent Night” Silent Auction”. Come one, come all and bring your money to our December 1st – Christmas dinner meeting as there are lots of great items, at various price levels. This would be a great place to do some fun Christmas shopping. Thank you to Lenore Summers and the Fundraising committee for all of your hard work.

Thank you, also, to our current Board members, who were busy during this month reviewing and revising (if necessary), their roles and responsibilities in the Club Leadership Manual (“CLM”). They

were also ensuring that all of their duties had been fulfilled in preparation for the transition of their documents to the new Board members, as well as preparing their Year-End Reports for this bulletin. Enjoy reading!

We had our Joint Board Meeting on November 24th and then Lenore had her first short meeting with the 2011 Board and is already getting organized for the upcoming year. Between both meetings Sharon McClare with the AIMEE committee selected the bulletin and specific articles for submissions to the AIMEE contest committee.

I am so proud to have had such a great team to work with this year. We have all worked well together and have all learned so much from each other. Thank you, to each and everyone of you for your support all year! Many of you are returning members on the Board, so I know that you will continue to work well together and our new members are a great addition. I look forward to working with the new Board under Lenore’s leadership.

I must also thank all of my mentors and our Regional Director, Lynne Dunstan for their help throughout the year.

As well, thank you to Maureen McClean, President of the Desk and Derrick Club of Calgary and to her members for their participation with the joint meetings and their collaboration to our events this year.

So, it is now time for me to step down from my role as president. I will be hosting my last Members’ meeting on December 1st, where we will have the Installation of new officers. I will then become the Past President and continue to contribute, learn and share with all of you. I trust and know that you will all give Lenore and the new Board the same extraordinary support that you have given me all year.

PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE - MINUTES

The record of the proceedings of an assembly is called the minutes. Unless the minutes are published, they should contain mainly a record of what was done at the meeting, not what was said by the members. The minutes should never reflect the secretary’s opinion, favourable or otherwise, on anything said or done.

The first paragraph of the minutes should contain the following information:

1. the kind of meeting: regular, special 2. the name of the Club or assembly 3. the date and time of the meeting, and the

place 4. the fact that the regular chairman and

secretary were present or, in their absence, the names of the persons who substituted for them; and

5. whether the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved (as read, or corrected). Any correction is made in the text of the minutes being approved; the minutes of the meeting making the correction merely state that the minutes were approved “as corrected”.

The body of the minutes should contain a separate paragraph for each subject matter, giving the name of the mover, seconder, the exact wording of the motion (with the facts as to whether the motion may have been debated or amended being mentioned only parenthetically) and the results of the vote (including primary and secondary amendments). Also included are notices of motions. Committee Reports should be recorded incorporating only their important points. The name and subject of a guest speaker can be given but no effort should be made to summarize his remarks.

The last paragraph should state the hour of adjournment. The minutes should be signed by the secretary and can be signed, if the assembly wishes, by the president.

Consultatively Yours Sharon

Where in the World is Norman? If you have been keeping track of Norman between these pages over the last year, you will know that Norman is safely home.

At our November meeting, in addition to our elections, we had Linda Green speak to us of her adventure watching Norman travel through Desk & Derrick world. It was very entertaining to all.

Norman not only was fun to watch but in some strange way he also galvanized the D&D community as nothing has done before. You might say he rejuvenated our membership!

Thank you Linda, for your insights into this year.

SILENT NIGHT Silent Auction

ABFDDC FUNDRAISER

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

ABFDDC Fundraising Committee is planning a Silent Auction as our final fundraising event for 2010.

We are currently looking for items to Auction to our members and guests. Please think outside the box when considering items for donation, i.e. Do you have a talent/hobby that others members may want to make use of – maybe you could donate a gift certificate offering your talent or time to help them create that special gift?

Please advise Linda Topolinsky and/or Lenore Summers of any items that you would like to contribute to this event. Please include the following information in your email:

1. What the item is? 2. Who is contributing the item and whether it is

corporate or personal Donation? 3. What is the Dollar Value of the Donation? 4. The complete mailing address of the Contributor

- If a Corporate Donation – who do we send the acknowledgement to?

5. Will you be bringing the item to the Christmas Meeting or would you prefer that we collect it from you in advance?

Thanking you in advance for helping to make this Silent Auction a success! Make sure you read your Bulletin for upcoming Fundraising events planned for 2011!

This past year was unusual and challenging but lots of fun and certainly not boring!

Right from the very beginning I was faced with the challenge of adjusting our meeting format, changing meeting night and alternating meeting venues in order to accommodate the Desk and Derrick Club of Calgary in a working relationship.

Under the joint club circumstances this year, I personally feel confident that we did the best that we could do. It was a change from a routine year and we all had to learn to accept, be flexible and adapt to the new temporary structure. I know that it wasn’t always easy so I really want to congratulate and thank each and every one of you for your collaboration all year which helped make my job as president much easier to manage.

I also want to thank the Desk and Derrick Club of Calgary (“Calgary Club”) for being so cooperative and sharing with us all year. From our contacts and communications I know that it was a great experience for both clubs.

Once this relationship was established it was down to business, which began with establishing our club theme and goals for the year.

Our chosen club theme for this year was: Alberta Foothills Desk and Derrick Club (“ABFDDC”) – Communicates, Discovers and Educates. For purposes of this report I will address the C, D and E of our club theme in an effort to accurately reflect my year in review.

Communicates:

Q. You say what?

A. I say how; bulletin, website, emails, business meetings, workshop and one on one.

These are just some of the ways which the board members and I have used to communicate with the general

membership. We also encouraged our general members to read the monthly bulletin, answer questions, participate with writing articles and just enjoy and appreciate the content. Our website has current and historical information about Desk and Derrick and particulars about our club and the Association of Desk and Derrick Clubs (“ADDC”).

As President, it was important for me to listen, hear, understand and provide feedback on matters which were brought to my attention. I used my President’s letters, which were published in the monthly bulletin to provide information and a summary of current and up-coming activities/events. I shared pertinent ADDC and Region information by email as required.

At our monthly Board meetings and monthly members’ meetings, business was discussed and motions were made when necessary and to amend by-laws accordingly.

In October we had a planning workshop – “the Journey Ahead”, which will help guide us with future club goals.

We encourage continued communication and welcome your comments, suggestions and questions to any member of the Board. We are here to communicate with you.

Dicovers:

Very early this year the ABFDDC and the Calgary Club had the opportunity to volunteer their services at the NACE conference, which was a great place to discover more about the industry partners and to meet potential presenters for our club meetings.

Our Education committee organized two great field trips: in May, BJ Services; and in June, Southern Alberta Tour, where we had the opportunity to discover about industry suppliers, historic sites and coal mines.

Throughout the year, our monthly programs provided great opportunities to discover information about the energy industry and its affiliates through great guest speakers.

Also, by attending the Region VII meeting in Edmonton, AB and the 59

th Annual Convention in Houston, and those

various seminars and field trips, we have discovered different aspects of the energy industry and its affiliates, as well as, more about the ADDC and its members.

Educates:

By sharing the knowledge gained at the Desk and Derrick activities and events mentioned above, our members were able to write articles for our bulletin where all members would have the benefits of learning from them.

We were also very fortunate to have Brenda Wyton and Linda Topolinsky provide us with some leadership training at several meetings throughout the year.

Another fabulous learning opportunity for everyone was the monthly tips on parliamentary procedures written by our Parliamentarian, Sharon McClare.

Conclusion:

Again, I must thank every member of the Board, their committees, special committees, association leaders, mentors, members from ABFDDC and Calgary Club, presenters, writers, editors, readers, participants, employers, supporters, co-workers, friends, family and especially my husband, Karl! Without all of you, this year would not have been such a success.

I would also like to again, congratulate all award recipients and nominees. Your efforts were well rewarded and well deserved.

In conclusion, I am very proud to say that although we experienced an unusual and challenging year, the ABFDDC did Communicate, Discover and Educate and had FUN doing it all.

Thank you once again for a great year!

It is hard to believe that this year is almost over! There is so much to talk about as this was a year where we tried a new approach and as a result we have gained a better understanding of the direction our club needs to move in.

I learned that as a member – the more that I gave of myself, the more I learned about others. I made new friends, learned about the life experiences of other members and learned what they felt was important for our club.

I learned that as the Vice President – it is important to listen to the members at large and to the other members on the Board.

I was privileged to represent Alberta Foothills at both the Region VII meeting in Edmonton and at Convention in Houston.

I became more familiar with our Club and Association By-Laws.

I had the opportunity to learn more about what each member of our Board of Directors does and how each position affects the other positions.

How I presented myself was how other clubs, people outside of Desk & Derrick and our club members would see our club.

I could contribute to the success of our club.

This experience was invaluable and one of the most worthwhile things I have ever done.

I would like to thank Roseline Cyr, our 2010 President, who faced many challenges this year. Roseline approached this year with a strong commitment to moving our club forward and I know she will continue on that path next year as Past President.

I would like to thank all of our members for sharing their ideas and opinions with us as we worked our way through learning about our positions and the joint meetings.

To the other Board members – thank you for your help and support! I look forward to working with many of you again in 2011.

The Club purchased the QuickBooks Pro 2010 accounting software this past year. It has provided more accurate, efficient, and consistent financial reporting for the Club. The 2010 signing officers also made arrangements for a bank card which gave us quicker access to the ABFDDC monthly bank statements.

Thank you to all the members and especially the board members of the Alberta Foothills Desk and Derrick Club for guiding me while performing my duties as Treasurer of the Club. Thank you to Sharon Grocutt in Reservations for making the banking easier with speedy dinner meeting reports including the receipts and expenses. I would like to thank Lenore Summers and Loreen Jensen for organizing our fund raising projects and providing well-organized reports for the deposits. My gratitude also goes to Brigitte Shaw for efficiently co-ordinating the receipts and expenses for the June field trip. Tracy Fillmore did a wonderful job of collecting the annual dues and ensured our Association and Regional dues were paid on time.

I am excited to be serving a second term as your Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Alberta Foothills Desk and Derrick Club and trust that I will continue to receive guidance from all the members.

Looking back on our year, I have a number of things I am thankful for…

- My Desk and Derrick friends: May we always be as close as we are today.

- Being able to host IAN: I was able to use my organizational skills again. Thank you

- Lucy Mulgrew and Linda Green for your help with decorating.

- Debb Porath: Thanks for the bulletin reminders and waiting for my words of wisdom.

- Roseline and my fellow Board Members: Thanks for the memories, it was fun

- Speaking at Bonnett’s Energy about D&D and hopefully recruiting new members.

- Thanks Lorna Meyers, Marilyn Carter, Lenore Summer and Tracy Fillmore for your support and help in making this a BIG success!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! I hope all your days are joyful.

2010 was a very good year. The committee put out 11 Mountain Messages this year and through the diligent work of Marilyn Carter, our website has been offering more information on our club than ever before. We continue to help update the Alberta Foothills Desk and Derrick Club’s brochure.

During the year, the membership approved the purchase of a web design software package so that we could update our website and Marilyn Carter has done an admirable job of reordering the website and keeping our members apprised of all happenings in the Club. Also big thanks to Marilyn for being our club photographer and diligently making sure that we have a photographic record of our meetings.

I was privileged to attend the Convention in Houston in September and to be able to receive my AIMEE for Best Large Bulletin in person. I certainly could not have done it alone and would like to thank the following people for their help, especially my proof readers: Marilyn Carter, Linda Green, Nancy Ronca, Joanne Riggall, Roseline Cyr and Mary Alice Rooney and anyone who contributed an article or picture. I do hope I have not forgotten anyone from this list, and if I have I do apologize.

The success of a committee is never based on sole achievement. We as a Club should be very proud of the product we put out each month. I wish next year’s committee the best of luck.

This year we had 2 field Trips.

In May 10 of our members and 1 guest toured BJ Services Laboratory in Calgary. Those who attended were impressed with both the laboratory and our host – Cal Carratt of BJ Services.

In June 22 of us took a wonderful day trip through parts southwest Alberta. We rented 2 mini vans and our day began with a tour of Head Smashed- in- Buffalo Jump. This is one amazing historical site! From there we took a scenic drive to Lumbreck Falls for a picnic lunch and afterwards it was on to Bellevue Mine. We made quite the fashion statement in our hard hats! Our last stop on this trip was to the Great Canadian Barn Dance for a home-style buffet dinner. A great way to end the day with lots of things for everyone to do – horse drawn wagon rides, canoeing, an outdoor checker board and of course – we all love to shop.

This has been a great year and I am looking forward to more field trips next year.

In 2010 the fundraising committee has been pretty low-key. Unfortunately some of our ideas did not get off the ground. We are, however, still working on some of the ideas to bring to you next year!

Our first fundraiser of the year was a Raffle Basket, thanks to the generous donation of Lucy Mulgrew who donated all of the items in the basket; we managed to raise $441.27.

Our second fundraiser is also due to the generosity of one of our members – Loreen Jensen kindly donated her commission from the sale of Norwex products. We raised $110.36 from this fundraiser.

Once again, we want to thank one of our club members who has stepped up for the third fundraiser. Many of you have seen Gita Gopal’s ad in the monthly bulletin. Gita has generously offered to donate her commission from any of the trips that our club members book through her. The next time you are planning a trip – please don’t hesitate to contact Gita!

The fourth Fundraiser this year was due to the generosity of one of our Guest speakers. Nattalia Lea has donated 2 books that she has written, “Revenge of The Computer Widow” and “Miracles for The Entrepreneur”. We are selling these books for $15.00 each. To date we have raised $60.00 from the sale of the books.

Our final fundraiser for this year will be the Silent Auction at the Christmas party. To date we have approximately 25

items to auction off. These items come in all sizes, shapes and $ values and you will be able to find a wide variety of cool gifts ranging in price from $10.00 – $150.00. We will publish our results after the Auction!

We have already begun working on a major fundraising item for next year. The Calendar Girls are all hard at work! Late next spring we will begin to sell a 16 month Calendar that will commemorate Region VII’s 60th anniversary. Make sure you watch for this one!

Thanks to all of you for your support this year!

Just another tri-cycle! This, I’m told, is a member who has belonged to more than just one club. I was a charter member of Central Alberta D&D; a member of the Edmonton Club and now Alberta Foothills Club.

My first exposure to Desk and Derrick began in 1986 when I attended two

meetings of the Calgary Club. Following a move to Red Deer in late, 1988, I was approached regarding my interest in helping to form a new club in Central Alberta. Of course! We began quite strongly, with many members joining from my employer Amoco Canada. It was a very enlightening experience becoming involved

in forming a new club and the various positions held got me

right into the thick of things!! I served as Membership,

Reservations, Bulletin Chair, Secretary and Club President (for three years). Though our club tenure was brief, we hosted a Region Meeting during our formative years. Combining the Region Meeting with the Tulsa Convention as my first exposure to things on the other levels, I became a well rounded member, very enthusiastic and keen.

When the Central Alberta Club was unfortunately unable to maintain our Charter, I joined the Edmonton Club and involved myself in various capacities. During 2004, it was my turn for Region VII Director (and other committees over that time) and I cannot tell you the pleasures, education and benefits of offering

myself to that role. Once elected, I was scared stiff wondering if I was ‘good’ enough. Not at all comfortable in talking in public and overwhelmed initially, my fellow members from ALL clubs made this challenging year one that will be one of my fondest memories and a great period of growth for me. Desk and Derrick members throughout North America are quite astounding – no one wants to see you fail and will offer themselves in any way that you may need them!!

In late 2005 I left Red Deer and BP Canada behind when a job handling a winter drilling program for Canadian Natural Resources presented itself. What an amazing experience and a great way to ‘try my wings’ at living on my own and growing beyond that which I was comfortable. I lived in Helmet from Dec. until the beginning of April that year and then worked between Calgary and Red Deer for the summer and fall. When the industry slowed down and that camp was not happening in 2006, I decided to offer myself the gift of living in another country and teaching English to children.

I graduated from TESOL in November, packed my things into storage and left for China in February. The experience totally blew me away and I spent my 50th milestone year in a whirlwind of new language, culture and exploring on my own. An added bonus was Lise Champagne, a wonderful friend, joined me at the end of my contract and we travelled throughout Europe; the year was pretty much more than I could ever have imagined.

Settling back in Calgary and continuing my employment with CNRL have afforded me the opportunity to spend more time with my family, amazing grandson and my aging parents.

I love and enjoy music of all kinds, needlepoint, reading, travelling and most especially interacting with people!!

Greetings ADDC Members!

I cannot believe that the year is almost over. It has been a memorable year for me and I have all of you to thank for the memories. I hope it has been the same for all of you. I want to thank each and every one of you giving me the opportunity to serve as your 2010 ADDC President. As I have said, I never imagined I would have ever attempted taking on this responsibility but I am so glad I stepped outside my comfort zone. It is an experience that has led me in so many new directions this past year. I am finding new paths to go down and each day is an adventure.

My year started off planning for and attending the Budget & Planning Meeting in Tulsa and then it was on to the Region Meetings. First, it was off to Rockwall, TX to attend the Region IV Meeting. A month later I was in Abilene, TX for the Region V Meeting. Two weeks after that I was in Houma, LA for the Region III Meeting. Then it was off to Ellicottville, NY for my own Region I Meeting. A few weeks later it was then on to Edmonton, AB for the Region VII Meeting (I apologize for forgetting this one in my speech at convention). I unfortunately was not able to attend the Region II Meeting in Traverse City, MI or the Region VI Meeting in Great Bend, KS due to schedule conflicts, but I hope to attend a future region meeting in those two regions. It was a lot of traveling, but it was so good to be able to see and meet the members in their own regions and to speak one-on-one. I appreciate all the comments, suggestions and concerns that were shared.

The Association grew by one new club this year and I was honored, this summer, to present the charter to the Three Rivers Club in Pittsburgh, PA. They chartered with 53 members and going strong.

The first thing I knew, the 59th convention in Houston was here and gone. What an educational convention we had! From the field trips and seminars to the Industry Symposium, I don’t think we missed a thing. Since then, it has been all about finalizing all the loose ends, completing projects (new website) and attending Industry Appreciations that I was able to attend. I believe we have accomplished everything we set out to do this year, and more, and everything is in order to pass on the duties to Angie. Please give her the respect and support that you have given me this year. I know she will do a fantastic job and will welcome your opinions also.

As I step aside, but yet step forward to new endeavors, I look forward to continuing to work in any capacity that arises to keep the Association growing and thriving. We are a strong group and all of us should be proud of what we have accomplished and share the knowledge and enthusiasm we have about Desk and Derrick with everyone we come into contact with. We are our best promoters, so I leave you with the reminder to CONNECT, COMMUNICATE and COLLABORATE.

I wish you all a safe and blessed holiday season and a prosperous New Year. Make each moment a memorable one!

WOW, haven’t we been lucky with this fantastic fall weather. Incredible! It’s so nice not to be wearing winter garb or worrying about icy roads. I know its coming but every day like this is wonderful.

Elections will be over by the time you read this and I’m sure the new boards are excited about starting the New Year. Some of you are remaining in your existing positions and we are all grateful to you for continuing to volunteer. Congratulations to all of you for ensuring the continuation of our association by serving on the board or a committee. This year Region VII must submit any changes to their By-Laws to the By-Laws Review Committee so I recommend you don’t leave this to the last minute, start early.

Throughout the year the ADDC Board has been busy updating forms and procedures to make them easier for all to follow and to bring them to current standards. It does take time and we all appreciate the volunteer effort they have provided to keep us up to date. It has been a pleasure to work with them this year and my best wishes to them for the future. Congratulations to Angie Duplessis and the new ADDC Board of Directors; I know they will do a great job and are looking forward to getting started.

The Saskatchewan ladies are already busy planning regional and I’m sure it will be wonderful under the direction of Barb Schaefer. The Denver ladies are starting to work on regional in their town in 2012. Congratulations to the Denver Club for receiving the Distinguished Public Service to the Earth Services Award presented by the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists in recognition of their Magic Suitcase Program. They presented this program to 1142 students in 2009. The award will be presented November 20th. You guys are awesome!

As I sat at the Remembrance Day event in Devon I had time to reflect on my last year and a half and realized how thankful I am for the support and encouragement I received from all of you. And we are so blessed for the freedom and democracy we enjoy in this beautiful land. I couldn’t have done this job without you. It has been a grand time with wonderful memories, from our regional meeting to convention and all the fun in between.

Thank you all for a wonderful year full of friendship and support; for the beautiful gifts I received from you along with all the wonderful cards. May you all have a wonderful holiday season and I wish you every success in the New Year.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. Ghandi

As this is my last letter to you I wish you all the best and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Greetings, members! I wanted to make you all aware of a fantastic new DVD that was recently donated to the ADO media library. It’s entitled, “The Amazing Athabasca Oil Sands” and was generously given to the association by the Leduc/Devon Oilfield Historical Society. Thank you, Lynne Dunstan - Society and Office Administrator, for thinking of the Education Committee and passing this DVD along to us!

The written history of the oil sands dates back over 200 years when the first Europeans spotted bitumen along the banks of the Athabasca River. In 1788 Alexander MacKenzie wrote in his journal…”This region is stored with a substance of great economic value – and, beyond all doubt – when the hour of development comes, I believe it will prove to be one of the wonders of Northern Canada.”

The oil sands of Northern Alberta are now considered to be one of the largest oil reserves in the world. Activity accounts for over 20% of Canadian petroleum production and is poised to enjoy unprecedented growth. However, getting the oil out of the sands profitably would take almost 40 years of research, dedication, hard work and considerable financial resources. This documentary celebrates Canadian innovation and perseverance, and also explores the increasing global demand for energy as well as environmental concerns. Much of the project was shot in high definition and complemented with archival film.

At 45 minutes in length, this DVD would serve as a great industry program for any club. Please contact Andre at ADO ([email protected]) if you would like to check it out and increase your knowledge of the oil sands industry.

I wish you all the happiest of holidays!
