He’s got your back!

One day during football season, I heard one of the sophomore boys say to a classmate, “don’t worry buddy, I’ve got your back!” I puzzled over the meaning of this phrase and then I heard it again and again amongst the students. Given the context, I began to figure out its meaning and I began to like the significance of team spirit and moral support it seemed to hold. One day I finally did a google search on its meaning. It seemed that its meaning went beyond the football field.

Urban Dictionary indicates that the meaning of “I’ve got your back” implies that

“You are going to watch out and be a second set of eyes for someone, that you

will look out for their best interests and let them know if they have missed something

and you will stick up for them.” The term may have originated in war time when one’s

comrades in action watched each other’s back against snipers and enemy attack.

Wow! How many people can I count on who would do this for me? For whom am I

willing to be this selfless?

The term “I’ve got your back” takes on a whole new relevance and meaning as I think

of Mount St. Joseph, and the collaboration and team spirit that it takes to provide a

home for all the women who live here. Each person’s role here is so significant and

important and when everyone works together and supports one another in their role,

we are a blessing to one another and to our ladies! This was seen so beautifully in the

last snowstorm when the maintenance crew came in before the storm started, when

some of the morning shift, knowing that some of the roads would be impassible came

in early and stayed the night, when the kitchen crew prepared extra breakfast sand-

wiches for the maintenance crew that had been working all night, when the the DT

Staff helped in the cottages, and when so many of the staff were flexible and took on

extra responsibilities in spite of the weather – all for the good of our residents.

Even more significantly, I am in awe of the God who truly does “have our back” and

who in fact holds us in the palm of His hand and provides for us in so many wonderful

and unexpected ways. I am reassured constantly of His loving presence who comes

not just as a babe at Christmas, but One who walks with us at every moment of life

and speaks those words: “I know the plans I have for you, plans for your welfare and

not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come

and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek

me with all your heart.”(Jeremiah 29:11-13)

Often the world lures us into sticking up for our own ego and interests, even if it means back-biting and back-stabbing. However, as we begin a new year, full of unknown

events and choices, I can hear His voice who invites me not only to stick with Him who has “got my back”, but to be the kind of person who will build this collaborative team spirit, be that second set of eyes, look out for the best interests of others especially those most vulnerable and be prepared to defend them. Thanks to all of you who have truly been a support in collaboration for the good of our ladies!

Sharing your story….

Each of has a “story” to tell. One may balk and think that there’s not anything about them to be shared, but each of has a story to tell…

One day, this “idea” about sharing one’s story, helped me to realize its meaning and significance in my life. In our society of technology and instant news, communication is supposedly increased, but sometimes “sharing conversation” is a bit minimalized. It is easy for me to write a quick “ok and thanks” on a text message, but this doesn’t always express the feeling or meaning of the news transmitted. When someone comes, sits, and talks with me, I learn so much from them about their day, news, and life.

Undoubtedly, some people are more gifted in telling a story than others. However, each of us can listen and be impacted by a story. As we live the Advent and Christmas Season, I ask you to reflect on the story of Christmas and the journeys you have made to these days.

As we approach Christmas, each person has a “memory” that is their story. Take the time to ask and lis-ten and also to share. I enjoy the hope, peace, joys, and love which Advent brings to culminate in the Birth of our Savior and Lord. By living out these virtues of Advent this Season of expectation, we can also share in the story of the birth of Jesus.

I know someone will listen if you want to share!

Mount St. Joseph staff attended a Job Fair at McHenry County

College (MCC) this year. We are always looking for qualified,

wonderful staff to work here. Please spread the word, and continue to

send wonderful people our way.

Since the last newsletter, the DT Clients and staff have been very busy learning about the fol-

lowing themes: community helpers, fairy tales, costumes, Halloween, country-western,

Thanksgiving and soon Christmas around the world.

Sister Neuza and Sr. Esther from Italy made a visit to the DT Program. In preparation for their

visit, the clients in each classroom made flags from Italy. The DT Program also made a CD

from their visit to our program and gave it to them as a remembrance.

In September, we had Apple employees from around the U.S. come and volunteer with us.

Both the volunteers and clients had a lot of fun, and are looking forward to another visit from

them.

We continue to use our iPads and Smart Boards and are always looking for new applications

to use with the clients.

For Halloween this year, the staff and clients made T-shirts of their favorite fairy tale charac-

ter which turned out so well, we ended up making more and selling them as a fundraiser

along with our Halloween fundraiser.

The DT Program made over $400.00! Thank you to all who helped bake and make all the T-

shirts.

Also in November we remembered all those clients who passed away with

an altar at the end of the hallway.

Workshop News

The Annual Countryside Christmas Dance was held again, and the ladies so enjoyed this event. They got all

dressed up, listened to music, danced and had a meal together. What a beautiful, festive event to kick off

the holidays!

Cottage News

Angel Guardian Angel Guardian has a new House Manager! The ladies are excited about having long time caregiver, Kim Pran-er, back in the cottage on a daily basis. Her efficiency, organization and positive spirit are invaluable and much appreciated. Angel Guardian ladies got out their winter gear in early November as Fall turned cold in a hurry! No matter the weather, it’s always fun to go on outings into the communi-ty. Panera is a favorite for cinnamon rolls and coffee. Culvers is good for bumping into other MSJ residents and their families. Target, Walmart and the Dollar Store are all good for stocking up on snacks, leisure activities, and sweet smelling body wash. Sacred Heart It’s Christmastime at Sacred Heart Cottage! Luz Pulido (DPS) has decorated the cottage, as she has for years, and it looks AMAZING! Christmas music and Hallmark Christmas movies are a favorite and there is holiday cheer in the air. During December the ladies of Sacred Heart will enjoy holiday festivities at their workshops and a Christmas party at the cottage, which includes a visit from Santa and his elves! During this season and throughout the year, a special thanks to all the staff who pick up extra shifts, fill in for each other, work the holidays and continue to bring good care, respect, dignity, and love to the residents of Sacred Heart Cottage. Guanella The ladies of Guanella cottage enjoy a monthly outing to “Coffee Club” with their Q, Christine

(me). I take a small group of ladies to Target every Monday morning for some shopping then

we go to the Starbucks inside Target for a drink. Thanks to a generous benefactor, the drinks

are free! Once finished with our drinks, we drive on to their work places. So the ladies still

get to enjoy their day at work!

St. Joseph

St. Joseph ladies are keeping very busy and looking forward to Christmas. Little City/Countryside hosted their annual

Holiday Dance on 11/30/18. The ladies enjoyed dinner and dancing and visits from Santa and his elf. Two separate

groups of St. Joseph ladies will be attending productions of “Shrek” in December and the ladies will be attending an an-

nual Christmas party at the home of one of our guardians. St. Joseph Cottage’s annual Christmas party will be held on

Sunday, December 16th. The ladies have requested spaghetti and meatballs which they will be preparing. They will also

be baking and decorating Christmas cookies. Bowling season is here and practices

have resumed. The ladies are happy to be bowling again. Some of the ladies

attended the fall gardening classes and made pumpkin floral arrangements and

spiced cider sachets. In December, a group made decorations using holiday greens.

Marcellina Just like the weather of the Midwest, the women of Marcellina Hall have been breaking right into the fall/winter season.

Nine of the women put Special Olympics Bowling back on their schedule this October, with Jean I. being the newest ad-

dition to their team.

With the cold weather moving in, we’ve started to plan our indoor activities. A small group headed over with their “Q,”

Genevieve, to “Feed My Starving Children” just before Thanksgiving to volunteer where they labeled bags and packaged

food packets for children of Third World countries. Everyone had such a wonderful time giving back that we agreed to

make this a routine outing.

Some of the women of Marcellina have also signed up for Book

Club, in affiliation with UPSforDownS, where they will meet a few

times a month at a local library, coffee shop, or the organization’s

Schaumburg headquarters to read and discuss books of their

choosing. As this crew closes out the year with such exciting new

endeavors, we’re eager to see what opportunities 2019 has in

store!

It’s difficult to commit to anything for even a small length of time, but Sr. Marcella has given 50 years of her life to The Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence! What an amazing achievement. We are so happy to have her in our community, here at Mount St. Joseph. She brings so much joy to everything she does—a Master seamstress, rosary maker, knitter, crocheter, and the list goes on. Thank you for your religious service and for sharing yourself with us!

Special Olympics Bowling & Bocce

Our Olympians at Mount St. Joseph are always busy. They attended the Sectional Bowling Olympics in Rockford Illinois.

Many hours of practice go into the tournaments the ladies attend. They become better all the time.

There was a Special Olympics 50 Year Celebration Fundraiser at the Texas Roadhouse attended by some of

our Special Olympians. They had a blast.

2019 Home Visit Schedule

Mount St. Joseph Day Training program clients are now scheduled for music therapy once a week during workshop hours. Sessions have included activities based on the theme of the month as well as seasonal activities. During the month of October (Fairy Tales/Costumes-Theme), clients experienced “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and “Cinderella” in song form, choose Disney fairy tale songs, and participated in Halloween songs/activities. The month of November (Western-theme), brought playing the guitar with an adapted pick, Southwestern fiddle tunes, cowboy songs, and Thanksgiving songs/activities. In December “Christmas Around the World” was celebrated with Songs.

Sacred Heart and Angel Guardian residents now also receive music therapy in cottage once a week after workshop hours. It has been a BIG HIT!

The Mount St. Joseph Handbell Choir, four Chime Choir classes, and 1:1 piano lessons continue to occur on a once weekly basis. Saturday Sing-a-Longs in cottages are scheduled for once a month and the Handbell Choir plays at Mass one Sunday a month. Hear ye! Hear ye! The MSJ ladies received the royal treatment at the annual MSJA Fun Fair! Chairs Marion and Ter-

ry Timmins created a lavish medieval experience complete with costumes, games, activities, and prizes. Stations in-

cluded: Royal Photo Booth, Royal Tattoos, Coat of Arms, Castle Toss, Medieval Bingo, Coloring Table, Tower Toss,

Search for Riches, and Knight Bowling. Each group took golden boxes of specialty cookies back to the cottage for a

queenly treat. Angel Guardian held its own regal event with costumed volunteers and tailor-made activities. Thank

tors from A Zoo to You! Many of our Sisters were spotted feeding the animals, too!

Autumn Leaves is an annual opportunity for families and friends to reconnect while raising money for the Mount St.

Joseph Association. On October 14, participants enjoyed a delectable four-course dinner at Venuti’s in Addison and

toasted the 70th birthday of Mary Agnes Schissler, resident of Angel Guardian. Autumn Leaves, which is MSJA’s

largest annual fundraiser raised over $121,000 this year! Funds were raised through event sponsorship, Angel dona-

tions, in-kind donations, a live auction, several high-value raffles, wine pull, raffle baskets, cash raffle, and 50/50 raf-

fle Whatever your donation, Mount St. Joseph and the ladies were winners!

Lambs Farm: July and August

Food, fun and animals! Residents of several cottages enjoyed a day at Lambs Farm in Libertyville

this summer. Ladies visited the farmyard and petting zoo, took a train ride, and ate lunch at the

Magnolia Café.

Our on-site cooking classes have continued this fall. Guanella and Marcellina residents made two

types of smoothies in September; Sacred Heart residents had the same opportunity in November. Additional cooking

classes for other cottages will be scheduled this winter. We don’t have to tell you that this activity was well-received!

Trick or treat, life is sweet! The annual Halloween Party followed the MSJA General Membership Meeting. From

3:00-3:45, all cottages participated in creative Halloween festivities: games, trick or treating, crafts, and photo shoots.

At 4:00, everyone assembled in the gym for a performance by Bare Voices, Lake Zurich High School’s talented a cap-

pella choir. Then it was time to dig into a mouth-watering meal of barbecued pork sandwiches and several sides

(catered by MSJ’s own Clyde Lenzen) and an array of Pinterest-worthy desserts! Feeding and entertaining residents

and their families is a massive undertaking: thanks to the many volunteers who stepped forward to decorate, bake, run

stations, assist residents, pass out meals, and clean up. Days later, the residents were still talking about this boo-tiful

event!

The Frainey Family and many new volunteers pulled together to plan the 11th Annual Mount St. Joseph Association’s Invitational

Golf Outing at Maple Meadows Golf Club in Wood Dale. We were pleased that 147 golfers turned out to support our favorite char-

ity, the Mount St. Joseph Association. The delicious barbeque dinner---always a hit---was attended by 151 guests, including some of

the Sisters and residents. A record amount of money was raised: over $50,000!

These popular on-site sessions, conducted by horticulturist Kay Knight of the Chicago Botanic Garden, enticed our ladies to use

their five senses. Different groups of 15 ladies participated each time. Darling mum pumpkins were created by the October group;

these ladies proudly displayed the pumpkins in their cottages. In November, spice sachets were assembled: each lady attending

made two or three sachets to give as gifts. In December, participants made holiday greens arrangements.

The majority of Mount St. Joseph residents and day training clients receive funding through state and fed-

eral programs. The funds are stretched to cover expenses such as room and board, medication, dental

and medical services, and adequate staffing. Therefore, we rely heavily upon our benefactors to help pro-

vide extra-curricular activities for the residents to replace outdated equipment and furniture, and to reno-

vate buildings. St. Louis Guanella always said that God will not be outdone in generosity, and we are con-

vinced that those who assist us in our mission are blessed in countless ways. The individuals we serve

have a beautifully simple yet profound faith. One can rest assured that God hears and answers their pray-

ers!

Mount St. Joseph is a health care facility called home by approximately 125 women with

varying degrees of mental and physical disabilities. The facility was established by the

Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence in 1935. The Sisters live on campus and collabo-

rate with staff to provide exemplary care to each individual. In the spirit of our Founder,

Saint Louis Guanella, we strive to promote the rights and dignity of the residents and as-

sist them in growing to their fullest potential.
