Looking at Discourse From a Language Point of View We

Looking at discourse from a language point of view we understand that it is the types oflanguage we use and what we think, how we communicate what we say and do. Howeverlooking at it from a media scholar’s perspective we understand that discourses are ideas are embedded in what we do, say and think, and when looking at various magazines discourses are the ideas and messages within the text. When looking at Nuts Magazine, various discourses are apparent when studying this magazine. For example this magazine is meant specifically for men, this is evident through the pictures of half naked glamour models, superstars, football and comedians. These discourses are creating an idea of masculinity and how the modern man should appear and how they shou ld think. With the title ‘Britain’s 50 Sexiest Single Babes’, this creates the idea of how men view woman in society and also would create an idea ofmen’s perception of beauty and what they find attractive. If we now think about the cultural context in which this magazine was made it helps us to understand these discourses further. This magazine has been created in a consumerculture, and in most respects men and women are viewed as equal in society. Howeverthis is not all relevant when studying Nuts Magazine a s it portrays women as sexual objects. I feel that this discourse (women being seen as sexual objects) has been p resent in society for many years and reflects the thoughts of its target au dience nationally.
