Ellisons has been a long-term supporterof the annual Tendring Hundred Show butthis year, with the launch of its specialistteam focussing on rural issues, (seebelow), it increased its support to sponsorthe Art Show.

Sponsorship included hosting a previewparty for about 500 guests on the eveningof Friday 10th July and having a presencein the art marquee throughout the show, which took place at Lawford House Park,Nr Manningtree, Essex. Sadly the rules

are that this opportunity rotates amongstthe regular sponsors and so Ellisonscannot repeat next year but we are surewe will find some way to continue to showTendring and its community just howimportant they are to us.

Love me TendringThe annual Tendring Show is marketed as the "County's Premier Agricultural Event". 2009 proved another huge success with almost perfect show weather. A packed showgroundwith visitors, exhibitors and entertainment throughout the day provided a great atmosphere, at what is now one of the most popular local events on the calendar.

The winners of the event were Henry Wellsand his crew Angus Pickles who rounded the island in 1 hour 24 minutes in their B14 dinghy.

For all competitors, including seriousamateurs of all ages, the Mersea Round theIsland Race proved to be a great day ofsailing. The event was finished off by postrace family fun at the West Mersea YachtClub including a BBQ and live music

Seamus explains why Ellisons are more thanhappy to continue with their support of thisannual event:

“Many of our Firm, including myself, live on theisland, as do a number of our clients. The islandcommunity is important to us and how better todemonstrate our commitment than to continuewith the sponsorship of this unique event. It is awonderful family occasion and an opportunityto celebrate how very privileged we are to liveand work in this very beautiful coastal location.”

On 19th August approximately 140 boatstook part in this West Mersea Yacht Cluborganised race, which took place this yearon Wednesday the 19th August, mid-waythrough Mersea Week.

Ellisons partner Seamus Clifford didnot race this year, having being“persuaded” into acting as one of the

race officials, but others competing from thefirm included Tim Logan, Louise Bland andCeri Rogers.

Competitors are required to nominate theirstart time when they submit their entryforms one week in advance of the event. On the day the sailors must then decidewhether to circumnavigate the island toport or to starboard.

The day of the race saw temperaturesnearing thirty degrees celsius. During themorning the wind was very light howeverthe sea breeze soon kicked in making forgood race for all abilities.

The south-easterly wind favoured the laterstarting starboard bound competitors whose

Rugby FirstEllisons renewed its sponsorship of Colchester Rugby Club1st XV for the 2009/10 season for the fourth year running.Club Chairman, John Powell said ‘We are very grateful toEllisons for their continuing sponsorship. Links betweenlocal businesses and Community Sports Clubs are vital tothe sustainability of sport and we freely acknowledge thatwithout such support from Ellisons and others, our taskwould be very difficult’.

The merger with PTL in May 2008 madeEllisons the law firm with the greatest spreadof offices on the Tendring peninsula. The

merger prompted a more focused approach to servingthe rural community as Tim Logan, Head of PrivateClient and leading the Rural Affairs Team explains:

“Clients in the rural community have always beenimportant to us and so this is not so much about a newservice but an opportunity to improve our focus. Lookingmore strategically at what more we can offer our ruralbased clients was a logical step”.

The core Rural Affairs team is made up of lawyersfrom Private Client, Corporate, Litigation, Propertyand Planning. Other members of the Firm will alsobe involved.

The Rural Affairs team provides a comprehensiverange of legal services to farmers, landowners, food producers, stud and livery businesses andothers involved in living and doing business in therural communities.

However, we hope that the initiatives and eventshighlighted in these pages give a flavour of how Ellisons take its role in the local community very seriously indeed.

Phil Eckersley acknowledged that manyin the room would be hoping for some“shreds of comfort” in his presentation

but tempered any excessive optimism bybalancing the fact that while there had beensome credit easing, the overall view of Citycommentators on the economic outlook wasstill fairly gloomy.
