“Unexpected Help”Hector’s family finds exactly what they needed.

The numbers are big: 46,874 people experiencing the crisis of homelessness in Los Angeles County.

But numbers don’t tell the full story. Behind every number is a person who has been impacted by of homelessness in LA. A mom who has lost her job or life savings. A young man who has aged out of the foster care system with no one to help chart his future. A child who is learning how to read. Each person experiencing homelessness has her hopes, dreams, and unique stories. They are not the problem or epidemic; they are the hearts and souls of our community who need our help.

You have been a part of our efforts to help them, and we look forward to doing even more together in the coming year. We know the single most effective solution to end homelessness is housing enriched with supportive services. On March 7th, we can vote to allocate critical resources for people with the most complex needs, including those with mental health barriers or physical disabilities.

Looking Beyond the Numbers

Measure H is a ten year funding proposal to invest in homeless service throughout L.A. You helped us pass Proposition HHH, which will provide 10,000 units of permanent supportive housing in Los Angeles for the next ten years. We need your help again to ensure that appropriate services are also available in that housing to permanently break the cycle of homelessness for thousands of families and individuals.

Ending homelessness takes creativity, collaboration and resources at every level. As the campaign for Measure H begins, I hope you’ll remember the powerful stories of the people behind every number. In partnership and with gratitude for an amazing 2017 ahead,

Hector and Raina, high school sweethearts, have always been one another’s support system. From Hector’s time in the military, to layoff after layoff, to the Autism diagnosis that their youngest son received at two years old, they’ve always had each other to turn to.

Between Hector’s many entry level and temporary positions, and paying nearly all of their income towards daycare and rent, it became harder and harder to take care of themselves and their two boys.

“Shortly after we received our son’s diagnosis, I was forced to quit my job as a legal clerk to take care of him,” Raina said. “We couldn’t afford the daycare. Everything fell on Hector, but he was a temp. It was impossible to count on.”

Then Hector got a job offer in San Diego at a well-known financial services company. Some friends offered to rent the family their garage so they could save money. Everything seemed to be working out. Until Hector lost his job.

“No matter where I moved, as a telephone banker in the finance industry it seemed like I was always getting chased out. “

Not too long after he was let go, Hector and Raina discovered that their landlords were facing an eviction, which meant they too would soon be out of a home.

Now facing homelessness, Hector and Raina decided to move back to Los Angeles where things were more familiar. They found a park near their old neighborhood and spent their first night in the car. Hector called 211 and prayed.

By the next morning, an LA Family Housing outreach worker helped them complete an initial assessment. A few hours later, the family received a motel voucher. The next day, LAFH got a VA representative to help Hector access his veteran’s benefits. It all happened so quickly – more quickly than he or Raina expected. “I used to say that we were lucky,” says Hector, “but this has been more of a blessing. The resources came; the doors opened. It was more than I could do on my own.” At LA Family Housing, the family has found the support they needed to rebuild their lives. With case managent help, Hector has been able to apply for special housing for veterans’ families.

Los Angeles Rams players Tavon Austin and Robert Quinn went above and beyond for a single mother and her six children for the holiday season.

Quinn asked the Rams for help finding a family in need. The team then reached out to LA Family Housing who connected Quinn with Rebecca Carter. Rebecca had recently reunited with her kids and found an apartment for her family. She wanted to put her homeless past behind her.

To everyone’s surprise, Quinn and Austin purchased every single item on the Carter’s wishlist! Their generosity was captured in a story that ran on ESPN.com.

Our Real Estate Development focus increases the affordable housing stock in Los Angeles and allows us to advocate at the local and state level to raise more funds for development. Over the next five years, we will expand our pipeline of affordable housing with completion of The Campus and two new apartment buildings.

“Our case manager is so crucial to our success,” says Hector. “ She always goes above and beyond to make sure our family is taken care of.” The family is still in Bridge Housing and optimistic about the future. They plan to get good jobs, build their credit and one day own a home. Raina is considering the future: “I want to go back to school. My kids are looking up to us; I want to give them something to look up to.” Ending homelessness requires a

multifaceted approach. LA Family Housing was well represented among the 100+ people that attended the LA County Board of Supervisors meeting on December 6th in support of including a quarter-cent sales tax on the March 7th ballot to fund homeless services across the county.

The measure is expected to raise $355 million a year - for 10 years - and serves as a complement to Proposition HHH which will provide up to 10,000 units of permanent housing over the next 10 years. In conjunction, both efforts will be

the most substantial public endeavor to end homelessness in the United States.

We know that housing with on-site services is a solution that works to end chronic homelessness. This ballot measure will help provide the resources we need to address the growing homelessness crisis.

On an episode of KPCC’s Take Two, Stephanie Klasky-Gamer joined a

panel to discuss solutions to the increase of family homelessness.

In the city of L.A., we have less than a 3 percent vacancy rate at all income levels of housing. We need to increase production across the board of new housing in our region....and allocate resources for services as well.
