EXTERNAL VAL IDATION SUCCESS

Hopefully you will have seen our weekend social media posts regarding the results of Glendore Public School’s External Validation. Glendore Public School is truly a great school, one that continues to get better every day.

We are holding fast to our vision that the school should be a respectful, caring learning environment, where everyone can succeed. This is our belief for our students, our staff and our parent/caregiver community.

Based on the overwhelming amount of evidence presented, the validation panel bumped up the school’s self-assessment to a result of Sustaining and Growing, towards Excellence in both the "Learning" and "Teaching" domains for the School Excellence Framework (hyperlinked title)

We should have enough evidence to be achieving Excellence by the end of 2018. Well done to everyone. This is a fantastic result for our students, our staff and our community. Glendore Public School, truly, a great school.

Good Afternoon Parents and Caregivers,

Our next P&C Meeting is coming up fast – Please join us next Monday evening from 6:30pm in our Library. I will be touring visiting parents and caregivers through our School Excellence Framework. This will provide a detailed insight into the many programs being funded and delivered locally. We would like to spread the word about the many wonderful opportunities for K-6-aged students.

SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL ~ OH THE THINGS WE CAN DO

Don’t forget to return both participation notes and T-shirt order forms. These have been included again at the rear of this newsletter. All students should have a show T-shirt for their performance. These will be issued to students on the day of their performance. Following the show, students will be able to wear their Seussical T-shirts to school as part of official uniform in Term 4 on each Friday. This will end on 14/12.

BOOK WEEK

To celebrate Book Week this year we were both entertained and educated by talented actors from School Performance Tours. They enlarged concepts of communication through poetry and in everyday life. Audience participation was a thrilling part of each show. Pass the Poetry Please gave us a new way to look at poetry. Carolyn, the actress, was very effervescent and full of confidence and radiated energy. Her use of props were action packed and delighted our students who enjoyed the performance as it made it a day to remember. Our junior students were enthralled for the duration of the Yes you can Orang-utan performance. Jarred, the actor, explained many ways of communication in subtle and surprising ways. Students in Kinder- Lawrence T, Yr 1 - Mila T and Yr2 - Abby H volunteered to help with the magic of the communication process. Mr Ashton kept a keen eye on a disappearing phone trick. The whole school, including the staff, dressed up as a favourite character. The school was abuzz with chatter about the books: while the laughter and fun heard in the playground and classrooms, throughout the day showed how successful the day was. Congratulations to all the students who took part and modelled their characters for everyone to enjoy. Book Week Co-ordinator, Ms Gill

STRANGER DANGER

Children have reported an incident in the vicinity of the Maryland Netball courts/Maryland Drive yesterday. If you have any information please contact Waratah Police on 49266599. Could all families please make time to discuss with their children the need to travel safely to and from school and also around local sporting fields, in groups where possible and to never engage with strangers. Should any child be approached they should as quickly and safely as possible leave the area and seek assistance from a responsible adult, eg. their parent/caregiver, school staff.

HENNY PENNY CHICKEN HATCHING KH had a wonderful time hosting 15 chicks to tie in with Early Stage One’s science topic ‘Paddock to Plate’. All of Kindergarten had the opportunity to visit and hold the chickens over the two weeks. It took a total of 5 days for all the chicks to hatch, and the students of KH did a great job of ensuring the chicks were comfortable and well looked after. Thank you to those parents and carers who have volunteered to adopt some of the chicks! We look forward to seeing photos of how big they grow.

STAGE 2 TOCAL EXCURS ION

This week, students and teachers enjoyed an engaging day on a heritage farm at Tocal exploring the buildings, listening to stories and getting involved in the chores of the past. The excursion provided students with a realisation of the living conditions and a good idea of some of the daily aspects of life on an Australian farm 150 years ago. The day involved a ‘Walk and Talk’ segment, where students heard the stories of the pioneers of Tocal and walk the grounds identifying the buildings and interesting sites. This included a visit to the Wonnarua grinding grooves on the site. Students then formed smaller groups and experienced a range of hands-on activities. The activities included: · old fashioned games (knuckles, horse-shoes, skipping, quoits, bamboo hoops etc.) · visiting the main house · finding out how food was prepared and learning about old fashioned technology in the old kitchen · carrying water with buckets on a yoke · washing clothes with a washboard and soap · dressing up in old fashioned clothes · visiting a blacksmith It was a fantastic day for our Stage 2 students with lots of interactive learning experiences and loads of fun! Many photos have been published on Facebook which reflect this fantastic day.

K INDERGARTEN OAKVALE FARM EXCURSION On Friday 31st of August, the students in Kindergarten had the opportunity to visit Oakvale Farm. As part of their Science and Technology unit - Paddock to Plate, students had the chance to experience the farm life including feeding the animals, milking a cow, petting a koala and taking a ride on the tractor. Students were able to see for themselves the animals and farm life teachers of early stage one have been talking about all term.

KFC ABORIGINAL ARTEF ACTS Did you know, that the largest KFC in Australia is right here in Newcastle? Well it is, at 648 Hunter Street, Newcastle New South Wales 2300. Another fact is that Australia’s largest KFC restaurant, stands above one of the country’s most significant Aboriginal heritage sites in Newcastle West. The artefacts are approximately 6500 to 7000 years old, which proves that the Aboriginal people were here for a long time! There are also about 5500 artefacts beneath the ground. These significant artefacts were discovered on May 27

th, 2011. This $2.5

million development has destroyed thousands of artefacts of cultural and scientific significance which date back almost 7000 years, highlighting the need to review the way NSW assesses and protects Aboriginal heritage. So please remember when you go to the KFC in Newcastle, just like we say in our acknowledgement of country, “Underneath the concrete and asphalt, this land is, was and always will be traditional Aboriginal land”.
