AME Roundup Highlights

The Canadian Diamond Drilling Association was excited to return to Vancouver this year for The Association for Mineral Exploration’s (AME) Roundup 2017. We were there to represent all of our members, contactors, mining suppliers and manufactures. It was great to see many of our members from across the country. There were many highlights from the Convention, which makes it hard for us to choose just one. However, if you have a favorite let us know on Twitter @CDDA_ON.

AME was very encouraging this year. The outlook for the future of mining and minerals looks brighter than ever. Geotech Drilling Ltd. really embraced the theme of a BRIGHT future at their booth this year. Check out their Instagram account for some great photos of sunglasses. I promise it will make sense if you click the link.

This year the conference ended

• Premier Christy Clark announced that the B.C. government will provide Geoscience BC with $10 million in funding over two years to further support the research work that boosts mineral, coal, and oil and gas exploration investment in the province.

• Geoscience BC released the results from its Search Phase II Project. This was the largest geophysical survey conducted in Canada in 2016. These results indicate the potential for new copper, silver, and molybdenum deposits in the west-central region of British Columbia. It will provide mineral explorers with important data to focus their exploration efforts, and will stimulate job growth in the region.

• Presentations from notable government, industry, and First Nations speakers including David Garofalo, President and CEO, Goldcorp Inc.; Don Lindsay, President and CEO, Teck Resources Limited; Terry MacGibbon, Executive Chairman, TMAC Resources Inc.; Grand Chief Ed John, First Nations Summit, the Hon. Bill Bennett, B.C. Minister of Energy and Mines and Responsible for Core Review; and Chief Ervin Charleyboy, Alexis Creek First Nation (Tŝideldel).

• An examination of reconciliation, its importance to Indigenous people, and the role of the mineral exploration sector in achieving reconciliation in Canada by Chief Dr. Robert Joseph, Ambassador for Reconciliation Canada.

An overview of exciting mineral exploration and investment opportunities in B.C. at the Invest B.C. Networking lunch, including an industry panel about the Golden Triangle moderated by Gwen Preston, who is well known as the Resource Maven.

with an optimistic outlook for 2017. Centered on the theme of “Gearing up for Discovery,” this year’s AME Roundup focused on sharing innovative ideas, generating new connections, and creating collaborative solutions to help shape the future of mineral exploration and development in a strengthening, but still volatile, market. 5,834 participants attended Roundup. 43 countries were also represented at Roundup. This is an eight percent increase from last year, which is a strong indicator of renewed industry optimism and investor confidence.

AME’s Roundup conference returns to the Vancouver Convention Centre under the sails of Canada Place from January 22 to 25, 2018. To stay up-to-date on conference details please visit amebc.ca/roundup or follow @AME_BC on Twitter and

“As the global minerals industry continues its recovery from an historic market downturn, it was tremendous to see such a strong and diverse turnout of exploration and development players at AME’s Roundup 2017 conference,” - AME Board Chair Diane Nicolson.

Did you know that there is free Helicopter Slinging Training on AME’s website?

The term slinging is the movement of cargo or equipment by helicopter where there is minimal or no ground transportation. The cargo is attached by a hook to the belly of the helicopter and then transported to a location.

Key components of a cargo hook include the load beam, the keeper, and the attach point. The load beam is the solid piece of metal at the bottom of a cargo hook that supports the load.

Usually it has a curved, narrow end that is used to load a ring, rope, or net onto the hook. The keeper is the locking, spring-operated mechanism that keeps the load from sliding off the load beam during transport. The attach point attaches the hook to the belly of the helicopter.

The Helicopter Slinging Training was jointly developed by AMEBC and PDAC with sponsorship from Bailey Helicopters and Yellowhead Helicopters. Created by Maria Gabriel at Anglo American and Kim Bilquist at Teck Resources Ltd.

You can download the training at AME’s Tools and Resources page on their website. Click here to travel directly to the training.

As a trusted leader, we bring a level of reliability that includes implementation, as well as the sale and rental of our proven tools. We had a grassroots beginning in Navi-dril™ bringing

oilfield tools to solve mining related drilling challenges, originally in the USA and Canada. As a result of growth and ownership evolution, we renamed our down-hole motor to Accu-dril™ and further improved its design, performance and options. It was in that time, we recognized

a burgeoning need for directional drilling and borehole survey services in several related fields.

Accu-dril™ is the signature directional down-hole motor created and utilized by IDS. With an industry trusted and proven performance record in directional drilling, IDS is confident in

Accu-dril™ to deliver reliable results, a long utilization life and versatile options.

IDS has a long history in borehole deviation survey services across the globe, primarily in the mining industry. As well, we have an extensive history of providing quality deviation survey

services in both the civil construction and energy markets utilizing a broad spectrum of magnetic and inertial guidance instruments. We maintain a large technical staff and fleet of

surveying and directional drilling equipment to meet nearly any drilling design challenge imaginable.

Robert Steadman

Meet your CDDA

Safety and Environmental Co-Chair

For the past 29 years, Mr. Robert (Rob) Steadman has been working diligently in the Diamond Drilling Industry. Currently, Rob is the Vice President of Human Resources for Foraco Canada Ltd. He is also Co-Chair of the Safety and Environmental Committee with the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association.

Rob started in the Diamond Drilling Industry in 1987 with Longyear Canada Inc. based in the North Bay Contract Drilling Division. This provided him with great exposure to this unique business. He found he was able to assist with the entire mobilization process for drilling projects. The opportunity then presented itself for Rob to work on drilling projects across Canada as well as overseas. He continued his career with Boart Longyear in a Safety Manager role, and

then moved into a Human Resource

role. In 2006,he had an exciting and challenging opportunity to assist in the start-up of Foraco Canada Ltd. based in North Bay, Ontario.

Rob became involved with the CDDA though attending Safety Group Meetings, social events, the Overburden Open Golf Tournament, and our AGM & Convention. Rob witnessed many colleagues and friends getting involved with the association, so when he was nominated to sit on the board he was honored to accept.

Outside of work, Rob enjoys home renovation projects and often finds himself helping his friends with their own DYI projects. He has three daughters who are all about to finish their educations and he’s pretty certain they’ll keep him busy with home improvement projects for years to come.

“As members, it is our opportunity to get involved and work together to address
