Los Angeles residents are least likely to travel between Memorial Day and Labor Day compared to the rest of the nation. Only sixty-four percent responded ‘yes’ versus 87% of Washingtonians, 77% of Atlantans and 73% of New Yorkers. The average for a gallon of regular gasoline in Los Angeles currently stands at $4.005, amongst the highest in nearly six months. Based on the survey, Los Angeles is the only American city where gas prices are impacting summer travel plans. Forty-seven percent of Angelenos said that gas prices are too high to justify traveling, compared to just 25 percent of the national respondents. “Los Angeles has been plagued with refinery issues the past couple of months causing big spikes in gas prices,” said Allison Mac, petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. “This is playing a huge factor into our decision to hit the road this summer. While most of the nation are filling up at close to $1/gallon cheaper than last year, we are just 17.6 cents lower today than 2014.” The survey of over 2,700 GasBuddy Los Angeles members revealed that those who said they will be traveling; a majority (81%) are planning to take at least two trips and doing so by car. Other key findings from the survey include: Memorial Day tops the list as the most popular weekend to travel out of the three major holidays during the summer months, followed by Independence Day then Labor Day. Los Angeles residents least likely to travel this summer due to high gas prices, GasBuddy survey finds

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 19, 2015) A new study by the award-winning travel app GasBuddy found that high gas prices are affecting Angelenos summer travel plans. Los Angeles residents are least likely to travel between Memorial Day and Labor Day compared to the rest of the nation. Only sixty-four percent responded yes versus 87% of Washingtonians, 77% of Atlantans and 73% of New Yorkers.

Los Angeles has been plagued with refinery issues the past couple of months causing big spikes in gas prices, said Allison Mac, petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. This is playing a huge factor into our decision to hit the road this summer. While most of the nation are filling up at close to $1/gallon cheaper than last year, we are just 17.6 cents lower today than 2014.

The survey of over 2,700 GasBuddy Los Angeles members revealed that those who said they will be traveling; a majority (81%) are planning to take at least two trips and doing so by car. Other key findings from the survey include:

Memorial Day tops the list as the most popular weekend to travel out of the three major holidays during the summer months, followed by Independence Day then Labor Day. Almost half (43%) of travelers plan to take a road trip during non-holiday weekends. 78% of road trippers plan to drive more than 200 miles round trip; 40% plan to drive more than 500 miles round trip 37% will try to spend less than $500 per trip, including food and lodging Top three reasons for choosing a specific destination: 1.) Relaxation 2.) Sight-seeing/unique local attractions 3.) Visiting family and friends A third of people believe that the West Coast has the best road trip routes, in terms of things to do, things to see, accessibility, etc. Most are leaving the kids at home; 66% wont be traveling with anyone under the age of 18

Tips for drivers Due to varying state taxes and other factors, gas prices can range dramatically during a road trip. California currently holds the title of having the largest GasBuddy Gap which means the difference between the highest 5% of stations and lowest 5%; $1.013 separates the top and bottom 5% of stations. Additionally, more than 68% of Los Angeles travelers will cross state lines during their summer trips this year. The GasBuddy app shows real-time prices at all gas stations across the country so travelers can find the cheapest station to fill up. By using GasBuddy, travelers can save hundreds of dollars per trip.

Before hitting the road, travelers can use the Trip Cost Calculator to help plan and budget the trip.
