TOPIC – Furnace Clean and Tune Introduce Activity Demonstrate Activity Procedures
Demonstrate the activities listed on the activity sheet. Emphasize flame inspection and complete combustion.
Demonstrate Each Step of Inspection o Clean burner area o Check ASO
Define as automatic shut off
o Check pilot light o Check burner operation
Define venturi - the tube where the gas flows through
Explain orifice - small hole where gas goes out of and into venturi
o Check fire box o Check flue and vent o Check thermostat
Evaluate Student Work This is a completion task. All students must complete the task steps. Evaluate them on a scale of 1-4.

INTRODUCTION
Heating is a main consumer of natural gas. It is important that a furnace operate at its maximum
efficiency. In this activity you will perform a basic clean and tune of a furnace. There are many
different types of furnaces, but they all operate on similar principles. This will give you a basic
understanding of what is involved.
Remove furnace cover. Remove the cover
to gain access to the burners and gas valve.
Weatherization - Advanced Concepts and Practices Furnace Clean and Tune Student Guide
Turn thermostat to off . Turn the furnace
thermostat to the off position.
[2]
Inspect burner area. Look for signs of roll
out, charring, or soot. Look for the obvious
problems like rust, holes, and loose wires.
Clean burner area. Vacuum the burner
area to give you a better view of the furnace.
Continue the inspection after the burner area
has been cleaned.
Clean orifice. Use a paper clip to clean out
any spider webs, dust or other debris in the
area.
[3]
Clean the venture. Use a brush to clean out
the venturi. Vacuum the burner after
brushing.
Caulk window. Caulk all four sides of the
window flange.
Continue inspection. Use an inspection
mirror to check the burners, fire box and other
areas that are out of site.
[4]
Check gas valve. Look for lose wires.
Check for leaks with a soapy solution or a
gas detector.
Check wire connections. Check all wire
connections. Check for lose terminals. If
the wires are connected with screw
terminals, tighten the terminals with a screw
driver.
Check for gas leaks. Start by the smell test.
Use soap solution or a gas detector to check
for gas leaks.
[5]
Check the burner. Turn the furnace on to
get the burners to light. Check the flame. If
it is yellow or flickering, there may be a
problem.
Check pilot light. Check automatic shut off
for the pilot. If the furnace has a pilot light,
blow it out. Clean the tube with a brush.
Check the ASO. Check the automatic shut
off by trying to relight the pilot right after
blowing it out. If the pilot relights, the ASO
is not working and the furnace needs to be
repaired.
[6]
Check for complete combustion. After the
burners have been on for 5 minutes, check
the color again. They should be a steady
blue flame. When starting up a furnace,
sometimes dust will be burned off and make
the flame turn yellow which is why we wait
5 minutes before we determine if there is a
burner problem
Measure CO – Use a carbon monoxide
meter to test the CO level.
Check the flue. Inspect the vent pipes for
signs of rust, holes and unsealed
connections. Perform a draft test and a
combustion test.
