GENERAL INFORMATION

Date of establishment: 2006

Territory: The Los Dinosaurs Leda operates on the Subregion Alto Ricaurte in the Department of Boyacá, reaching a total area of 1034.66 km2 and 124,866 inhabitants. This subregion can count on an impressive territorial variety: desert (Candelaria) and Andean forest reserves of shrub oak in the town of Gachantiva and plains, as well as the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary in Iguaque.

The sub-region has applied to the process of being declared a world heritage from Unesco.

Members:  Public Sector (4): Governatorate of Boyacá, Municipalities of Villa de Leyva, Sachica, and Tinjaca; Private Sector (3): Chamber of Commerce of Tunja, open University at distance – UNAD, Comerciacoop; Social Sector (12): Ciase, Association “Crecemos”, Association of peasant villages and tourism, Agriculture processing company “Soprainfa Sat,” Association of agricultural and dairy producers of Tinjaca “Asoagrolactin”, Association of organic blackberry producers “Gachantiva Morativa”, Associations of tomatoes producers “Asointo”, Asolacruz, Association of Iguaque fruits, Alma de Barro Corporate group, Association Turistiva, Association Herencia Muisca.

Main objectives:

• Focusing on territorial development plans and programs that are socio-economic and environmentally sustainable, based on the different value chains (tourism, handicrafts, agro-industry, cultural industries);

• Design, management and implementation of productive and social projects;

• Management of inter-institutional partnerships with public and private local, departmental, national, and international bodies, in favour of the organized communities in the territory;

• Building and strengthening technical, social and economic capacities of the people involved in the process of territorial socio-economic development.

IMPACTS

Economic Impact

The LEDA promotes and supports the valorisation of those value chains with more potential, such as tourism, handicrafts, agriculture, with a relevant range of products such as tomato and onion bulb; the touristic sector is characterized by a relevant cultural, architectural, archaeological and paleontological offer.

In the last six years, the LEDA has promoted the creation of about 1,800 direct and indirect jobs by supporting small and medium rural entrepreneurs involved in the processes of agribusiness and rural development, cultural and creative industries, and rural and sustainable tourism.

Strategic Impact

The LEDA is an institution that articulates, stimulates and facilitates agribusiness and rural development, cultural and creative industries, and rural and sustainable tourism in the region.

Environmental Impact.

The LEDA has facilitated the adoption and implementation of good agricultural practices (in the fruit and vegetables production) and livestock practices, which has encouraged the use of existing environmental resources, the management of solid and liquid waste, the rational use of inputs and agrochemicals, care and preservation of water resources.

Social Impact

The Los Dinosaurios LEDA has supported 40 associations, benefiting 1500 people.

National Impact

The LEDA has been efficiently working together with the Ministry of Agriculture with the aim of strengthening the processes related to the rural sector.

OTHER

Projects

During the last six years, the LEDA has been able to implement 40 projects, for a total of about 2,000,000 US $ thanks to its participatory approach and the relationships with national and local public and private institutions.

Through these projects, the LEDA has been providing support and strengthening the agribusiness and rural development processes, cultural and creative industries, and rural and sustainable tourism. As an active part of these processes, nowadays, the LEDA is carrying out the initiatives of agro-industrialization and generation of added value related to vegetables, fruit and milk; moreover, it is implementing 4 routes of rural and community tourism, business initiatives related to a vegetables regional centre, a community touristic promoter, and fair trade shop.

Networking

The Los Dinosaurios LEDA is part of the National Network of Economic Development Agencies - Red ADELCO, and the ILS LEDA International Network.

Awards

In 2014, the LEDA won the Quality Label as “LEDA working for human development”, delivered by ILS LEDA.
