President’s Message:
I find myself reflecting over the past two years as President of our Los Padres Unit. In looking back, I hope that we made a difference in the pursuit of our objectives and goals. Everything we did centered on the improvement and promotion of the use and care of backcountry trails and lands. We are constantly working on our goals and this is done in many ways. It is a passion; whether it is trail advocacy in helping out at a workday or by attending public trail meetings, following legislation, holding fundraisers so we can donate on behalf of our cause, or working with our youth. It is all important. I am especially proud that when it looked as though 2018 might be the first year there would not be a Backcountry Horsemen of California Rendezvous, our Unit stepped up to the plate and made it happen right here at home in Paso Robles. It was a great financial success in
raising $19,350 for our state treasury. Thank you to our Rendezvous Chairman and Committee for your endless hours of hard work and to those of you who participated. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Recently we held our annual Fall Camp and Ride Fundraiser. It was also a
financial success! Over the years our event has fluctuated in attendance. But
regardless of the number, it has always been a wonderful gathering. Thank you
all for your participation and a BIG THANKS to the dedicated volunteers who
made it happen. You all know who you are! This is my last President’s
Message. The theme seems to be “THANK YOU”. Please indulge me one more
time. I want to sincerely thank our 2018 Officers and Board of Directors. All of
you took time from your busy lives to make this unit a success. And to all of our
members, thank you for keeping your Backcountry Horsemen memberships
current. We certainly would not have a unit without you all! Next General Meet-
ing: Because of Thanksgiving we will hold our meeting on the 4th Wednesday of
the month, instead of the 3rd Wednesday of the month. The November meeting
will be at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, November 28 at Round Table Pizza, 6915 El
Camino Real, Atascadero. This is our Annual November Election of 2019
Officers and Board of Directors. I hope you will consider to volunteer.
Happy Trails!

Montana De Oro. There is a hive of yellow jackets on the Barranca Trail located near the
Barranca hilltop. It is on the east side of the north approach heading to

SB County Supervisor Ride
Last Saturday, November 3rd, Kathy Longacre and I rode with Santa Barbara County Supervisor Joan
Hartmann at Midland School. There were 11 riders total. It was a great opportunity to talk with Supervisor
Hartmann about trails and horse camping. We did discuss the high cost of Live Oak Camp. I told her
BCHC would put a letter together to explain how the costs have risen over time and now exclude many
non-profit groups that once camped there. So, now I guess I need to write a letter! If anyone has some facts
of Live Oak camp history or costs and dates, that would help me put together a factual letter.
Please email to me at [email protected]

Old Spanish Trail Documentary Film
Los Padres unit members Jim Clark, Otis Calef and Richard Waller
with filmmakers Benedicte Schoyen and Ned Clark went to Santa Fe,
New Mexico for the Premier showing of the film,
The Old Spanish Trail, the documentary made by Benedicte and Ned of the first reride of the Old Spanish Trail since
1848.
The Premier was held at the La Fonda Hotel on the Plaza in Santa Fe, November 2. Several hundred people came to
view the film. Before the showing Ned sang the theme song which he wrote, it seems the title might be, Three Old
Goats.
The film will be shown again on November 18 at 2:00 PM at the Calamigos Equestrian Event Center at the Los
Angeles Equestrian Event Center. Jim Clark will bring mules, Richard will bring a traditional Spanish Aparejo
saddle. They will demonstrate how the caravaners from Santa Fe used the saddle. A large turnout is expect for that
showing.
We will hold a local viewing of the film at the Edwards Barn in Nipomo in early 2019. Stay tuned! We will
charge an admission, the proceeds will go to the unit to help it work on its mission of preserving and protecting public
lands.
The film will be distributed to BCHA units and chapters across the country to be shown as a fundraiser.
Richard wrote a guide book on the Old Spanish National Historic Trail with an account of their Ride, it is available on

Fall Camp and Ride Stories, photos and comments!
Despite the lower than usual turn out, a good time was had by
all! There were a lot of beautiful pumpkins donated for the
carving/decorating contest & 1 giant Guess-the-weight one
brought by Brenda & Mike Mills. The BBQ chicken dinner was
the best ever (how can white meat be fall-off the bone tender?)
not to mention beef tri tip Sat.. Although the costume contest had
less than 10 entries, Karen and Mike earned 1st place w/ their
Honeybee (Mike) and Lovely Flowering plants in a pot worn by
Karen ( I forgot to ask you how did you make that stay up
Karen?). Many THANKS to all the raffle tickets buyers and
donations which helped contribute so much to the club.
