When we talk about actions that reflect back on the speaker, such as “I wash my hands.” or “You brush your hair.”, we use…
REFLEXIVE verbs.
REFLEXIVE VERBS
Reflexive verbs are conjugated like they normally would be.
HOWEVER, they must have a reflexive pronounpronoun with them.

PRÁCTICA – ESCRIBE EN ESPAÑOL: 1. I wash my hands. (yo) Me lavo las manos.
2. He gets dressed. (Él) se viste.
Or
(Él) se pone la ropa.
3. Alfonso wakes up. Alfonso se despierta.
4 . My little brother WOKE up. (pretérito)
If the verb is in the preterite, you still put the reflexive pronoun in front of the conjugated verb.
Mi hermanito se despertó.
5. We wake up. Nosotros nos despertamos.
6. María brushes her teeth.
María se cepilla los dientes.
7. Simón BRUSHED her teeth. (Still reflexive, but in the preterite)
Simón se cepilló los dientes.
8. The elephant (el elefante) takes a bath.
El elefante se baña.
9. You (tú) put on makeup.
(Tú) te maquillas.
10. You put on make-up yesterday.
(Tú) te maquillaste ayer.
11. The cat looks (at himself) in the mirror.

CONTRASTING REFLEXIVE AND NON-REFLEXIVE USE OF VERBS:
When the recipient of the action is the subject of the sentence, you use the reflexive.
When someone else other than the subject of the sentence is receiving the action, you do not use the reflexive.
CONTRASTING REFLEXIVE AND NON-REFLEXIVE USE OF VERBS: The elephant takes a
bath (bathes itself):
El elefante se baña.
The trainers bathe the elephants:
Los entrenadores bañan los elefantes.
POR EJEMPLO:
My uncle shaves.
Mi tío se afeita.
The barber shaves my uncle.
El peluquero afeita a mi tío.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUN PLACEMENT There are two places in
the sentence you can put a reflexive pronoun.
So far you know they go before the conjugated verb:
Tú te lavas el pelo todos los días.
Ellos se bañan cada noche.
Yo me despierto a las cinco.
When there are TWO verbs in a sentence, you have a choice to make regarding the positioning of the reflexive pronoun.
As you know, based on the two-verb rule, when there are two verbs, only the first one is conjugated. The other verb is left in the infinitive form.
If there are two verbs, you may hang the reflexive pronoun onto the end of the infinitive:
Necesito acostarme temprano mañana.
Tú quieres despertarte tarde. Nosotros vamos a levantarnos
temprano.
Notice the reflexive pronoun has to match the subject.
When the sentence has one verb, you HAVE to put the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb:
Tú te duchas todas las mañanas, ¿verdad? Ella se maquilla elegantemente.
When the sentence has two verbs, you have a choice of where to put the reflexive pronoun.
It can hang onto the infinitive, OR it can be placed before the conjugated verb.
You have to recognize the conjugated verb, though.
In the sentence, “Nosotros vamos a levantarnos temprano.”, what is the conjugated verb?
Vamos So, if you want to put the verb in
front of the conjugated verb, the sentence goes like this:
Nosotros nos vamos a levantar temprano.
PRÁCTICA

Austin Powers necesita cepillarse los dientes.
Or in front of the conjugated verb:
Austin Powers se necesita cepillar los dientes.
2. They are going to brush their hair.
Ellos van a cepillarse el pelo.
Or Ellos se van a cepillar el
pelo.
3. They need to take a shower.
(Ellos) necesitan ducharse.
Or (Ellos) se necesitan
duchar.
4. We don’t need to put on any more make-up. (Just put no in front and más at the end)
No necesitamos maquillarnos más.
Or No nos necesitamos
maquillar más.
5. I want to get up now. Quiero levantarme ahora. O Me quiero levantar ahora.
6. Brian prefers to take a shower.
Brian prefiere ducharse. O Brian se prefiere duchar.
7. Effie is going to dress and fix her hair elegantly.
Effie se va a vestir y peinar elegantemente.
O Effie va a vestirse y
peinarse elegantemente.
8. She has to put a hat on, too.
Ella tiene que ponerse un sombrero, también.
O (Ella) se tiene que
poner un sobrero, también.
9. They want to take a bath with soap and water.
Ellos quieren bañarse con jabón y agua.
O Ellos se quieren bañar
con jabón y agua.
10. We need to dry off. Necesitamos secarnos. O Nos necesitamos secar.
