VILLAGE MAP.

Looking back on the days before skiing, many of our valley’s past industries are well-known: shing lodges, logging, mining, and the railroad being the main draws. But did you know that there was once a mink ranch at the south end of Green Lake? Mr. P. Lineham, a retired businessman from Vancouver, moved his family to the community of Alta Lake in 1925 for the express purposes of breeding and selling mink pelts. There was big money to be had in the mink business.

Mr. Lineham wanted to be able to work in the outdoors and also have a regular and healthy income. Cue the introduction of a brand new industry in the Whistler valley. The Lineham Mink Ranch was not to be your run-of-the-mill mink farm. In fact, the Linehams used only certi ed Northern Quebec minks that had been bred in captivity. Each animal had its own pedigree and everything.

A year after the farm began operations, the Linehams could boast over forty animals and were planning for the addition of another 60 minks within the

HISTORY. whistler’s lost moments

year. The pelts from the mink farm were sold all over Canada and Europe. The Linehams could get a $39.00 per pelt, an impressive sum for the 1920s. Each breeding pair of minks could fetch as much as $200!

However, when the market crashed in 1929 and the Great Depression began, the demand for mink pelts plummeted. Consequently, the Lineham Mink Farm was forced to close down and the family returned to Vancouver.

We do not really know what

happened to the remaining mink at the Lineham farm. Perhaps Mr. Lineham tried to salvage his investment by securing as many pelts as he could. Or maybe, just maybe, there are still some Northern Quebec mink scurrying around the forests of Whistler.

The international competition will screen up to 80 lms over 5 days this year, including world premieres, features, documentaries and shorts, from which over 50 % of the content will be Canadian. The winner of the main competition, ‘Borsos Award for Best Canadian Feature’ will walk away with fteen thousands dollars, the second largest cash prize for a Canadian lm in the country after Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

One of the themes this year is music, with a focus on the Canadian music scene. In addition a late night horror/cult series is planned for those looking for a little late night fright. If horror is not your thing, then the festival also o ers family day programming. In fact, the WFF is chocked full of lms for every taste, so no matter what your preference you’ll be sure to nd a lm that resonates with the lm bu in you.

Organisers prepared this year’s festival with meetings, screenings and parties as well as opportunities to actually meet face to face with many of the people who created the movies.

Alongside the Whistler Film Festival is a three-day Industry Summit, which provides a full range of project development, market and networking opportunities for lmmakers. Designed to bring lmmakers and industry executives together through a series of engaging and cutting edge discussions, pitch sessions, one-on-one meetings, interactive workshops, master classes and intimate networking events, the Whistler Summit has broken ground by fostering creative and project development opportunities and is proud to be a launching pad for growth and discovery.

Whether it’s the Opening Gala or Celebrity Challenge Ski Race where you can admire some of the industry’s greatest talents, or the outdoor screenings under a magical winter sky, an awards brunch or the Closing Gala, this big little festival will be a whirl wind of high energy fun and cerebral entertainment not to miss.
