FHW – President’s Remarks. We just had a summer social activity, going to the Bowie Baysox baseball game on August 23rd. Thanks to Rita Goerling for coordinating this. About 20 of us had a good time and enjoyed the fireworks after the game. Fortunately the rain ended before the game this time. Our last sanctioned event for the year is New Years at Savage, which is also our biggest event. We are looking for event ideas for next; please let me know of any. Thanks to Bob Lumbert for meeting the challenges of sanctioning our YREs for next year. We have a few changes to our YREs for next year. Sykesville is transitioning to Columbia. They have a club member who lives there, so John Dye asked me about it. Given the low participation and challenges with servicing the event next year, it made sense to transition this event to them. Unfortunately we had already sanctioned it, although Mike Green was able to make the change for us. St. Mary’s will be via the On-Line Start Box next year. In sanctioning it, some restrictions on what details can be advertised had to be overcome. We will also have a new POC for the Mt Airy YRE. With last minute changes and working common sense details for the St. Mary’s sanctioning, this year the task was not routine. Thanks again Bob. On Saturday September 21st, the Annapolis Amblers are walking the St Mary’s YRE. Come join us in welcoming them to our YRE . The next MVA meeting is September 28th at Frederick where Seneca Sugarloafers is holding an Oktoberfest event. The MVA meeting will be at the Library about a mile away. I am looking for someone to represent FHW, since I’ll have family in town that weekend. Here’s some AVA news of interest. 1) The National Executive Council is now the Board of Directors. 2) Three bylaws were approved at the convention. The AVA fiscal year will align with the calendar year. Note FHW will remain on July 1 fiscal year. Committees that are operational in nature are moved to be under the direction of the Executive Director. Committees that are important for the Board to help them govern the AVA will remain under the Board’s purview. The Board will be able to add up to three additional At-Large members who are not Regional Directors. AVA Associate and Lifetime members will have the opportunity to nominate and vote into office the At-Large Board Members. 3) Anyone can now receive the Checkpoint from the AVA. The Checkpoint is the main communication tool of the AVA National Office, and has been emailed primarily to club officers. Send an email to Hector at [email protected] to be added to the mailing list. 4) Starting September 1st, the AVA will no longer maintain a table of changes to the Starting Point. In order to see any changes you need to go to http://www.ava.org/spchangesV1.php and enter the stamp number in the box on this page. The stamp number is the four digit number, ####, part of '2019/Y####' on the 2nd line. I’d also try the event description on the AVA event page, since we always update the event listing when we have any changes, and the link basically takes you to this page. We are still looking for an events committee chair and checkpoint coordinator. We cover events in our club meeting, but have limited time for discussion. The event POCs now do a little more coordination for checkpoint supplies, getting them from those of us who are storing club assets. Thank you, and see you on the trail. Bob Wolfe

FREESTATE GROUP ATTENDED THE BAYSOX GAME

On August 23rd a group from the Freestate Happy Wanderers attended the Bowie BAYSOX baseball game. Even though the BAYSOX lost 7 to 0 we missed the rain and it was a fun evening of FOOD, DRINK, TALK and FIREWORKS. It is always great to get together as a club.
