As part of its commitment to player security, Iowa requires that players sign their tickets before retail personnel can check them on their behalf or cash them. Signing the ticket protects both you and the player and ensures that the player is paid any prize that they win.

Retailers may only check and cash signed tickets. This applies to all Iowa Lottery tickets.

Follow these steps to check or validate lottery tickets:

1) Ask the player if they have signed the back of the ticket. If they haven’t, have them sign it BEFORE you attempt to check or validate it. This applies to all tickets. The player should sign the signature line on the back of the ticket. For any pull-tab ticket that does not have a signature line, have them sign on the bottom of the back of the ticket.

2) Check or validate the ticket in the lotto terminal.

3) Pay any prize due to the player. Or, if the ticket is not a winner, hand it back to the player. Do not leave previously checked tickets on the counter.

Anamosa Woman Surprises Family on Christmas With Big Win An Anamosa woman had big plans for her $30,000 “Merry Crossword” winnings, including helping out family and surprising others over the holidays.

Michelle Bristol, 40, asked Lottery staff to hold off on releasing her story so she could surprise her husband and son with the good news.

“My daughter and I are the only ones that know,” she said in the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids on Dec. 19. “We’re going to surprise my husband and son Christmas morning.”

Bristol was alone when she scratched her Merry Crossword ticket. As she counted her words, her excitement started to build.

“I counted again and again and again,” Bristol said. “I immediately signed it, and when I picked my daughter up from work, I had it scanned.”

Bristol said when the clerk confirmed the win, she couldn’t hold back her emotions.

“I just started screaming and crying and hugging the clerk,” Bristol said.

She added:“This is going to make a difference in a lot of lives. My sister has MS and my niece has been doing everything they can to support both of them. So as soon as I leave this office, I’m going to the bank and sending some money to my sister.”

Bristol and her daughter were also going to adopt a needy family for the holiday.

“I believe in putting good karma out, so good karma comes back,” she said. “The first thing I thought of when I won it was giving to other people.”

Bristol, who is a carpenter, purchased her winning ticket at Kum & Go, 3350 Seventh Ave. in Marion.

Which Games Can Be Cancelled?

Tickets from the $100,000 Cash Game, Pick 3 and Pick 4 games can be can-celled, but there are some rules to follow when can-celling. Tickets must be cancelled the same day in the same store where they were sold and before the sales cutoff time for the game

Follow this procedure to cancel a lotto ticket:

- Touch the “Cash/Cancel” tab on the main screen

- Touch “Cancel Ticket” - Scan the bar code on the ticket using the document scanner or the scanner on the front of the printer. You may also manually enter the numbers using the keypad, then touch “OK” to accept the serial number and submit it for cancellation.

Which Games Can’t Be Cancelled?

You will NOT be able to cancel plays for the Powerball, Hot Lotto or Mega Millions games.

If you run one of these tick-ets through the terminal, you will receive a prompt informing you that the ticket is not eligible to be cancelled. This includes

jammed or misprinted tickets.

Automatic Additional 0.1 Percent Allowance

The Iowa Lottery now is-sues to all on-line retailers an additional 0.1 percent of ALL on-line games sales added to the base com-mission rate of 5.5 percent each week. The 0.1 per-cent applies to all on-line games, not just the games that cannot be cancelled.

You will earn extra com-mission every week, even when you don’t have any error tickets. And you can sell non-damaged tickets to another customer.

Hot Lotto Added to Play ‘Em All Options

Remind players that they now can ask for the “Play ‘Em All” when playing Powerball, Mega Mil-lions and Hot Lotto. This option lets them cover all the Powerballs, Mega Balls or Hot Balls for a particular drawing.

For a while now, players have been able to purchase Play ‘Em All for Powerball and Mega Millions, but now they can also purchase this option when playing Hot Lotto.

The Play ‘Em All option in Hot Lotto is 19 plays for $19, one for each of the 19 Hot Ball numbers available in one drawing. With that option, a player will be guaranteed to match the Hot Ball once to win at least a $2 prize.

When players ask for the Powerball Play ‘Em All option, they’ll receive 35 plays for $70 in Powerball, one for each of the 35 Powerball numbers available in one drawing. They will be guaranteed to match the Powerball once and win at least a $4 prize.

The Play ‘Em All option in Mega Millions is for 46 plays for $46, one for each of the 46 Mega Ball numbers available in one drawing. Players are guaranteed to match the Mega Ball once and win at least a $2 prize.

Selling a Play ‘Em All Ticket

To sell a Play ‘Em All ticket, touch the “Special Offers” tab in the top right of your screen on the Wave termi-nal (see image at right). Touch the icon for the game the player wants. You will be asked whether the player wants the multiplier op-tion for that game, then you must confirm the sale amount and the terminal will print a ticket.

Play ‘Em All feature gives players the chance to buy a ticket to cover all “extra” balls in a drawing

Remember that this requirement is part of your signed agreement with the Lottery to sell our prod-ucts. Any failure to follow the Lottery’s terms and conditions may result in revocation, suspension or termination of your license or limitations on your ability to sell Iowa Lottery tickets.
