RIHANN

A

LOUD

LOUD FRONT COVERThe shot used for the album is

an extreme close-up, Rihanna’s

hair is red and she is wearing

vibrant red lipstick conveying

that the music is much more

energetic and loud than the

music on her last album Rated R

which was very dark and

personal.

Rihanna looks reserved and

content in the photograph. The

album cover contains no props

as it is a close-up image. High-

key lighting is used for this

image reflective of Rihanna’s

mood and the music on the

album which ranges from up-

tempo electro pop to reggae-

influenced R&B.

The photograph has been

airbrushed to improve her

appearance. The album

presents an indefinite change in

the way Rihanna was

represented during her last

albums as the imagery is

lighter. A change in

representation is something

we’d like present in our artwork.

The cover art doesn’t feature

Rihanna’s trademark “R” symbol

possibly linking to the

reinvention of Rihanna during

this era and also to attract a new

demographic of fans that might

be interested in her new image.

The album title is written at the

bottom of the cover in justified

white text. It fits in with the use

of the other bright/positive

colours on the cover.

The cover art and the text fits

well because both are simple

and compliment each other. The

colour palette is kept consistent

with neither Rihanna or the text

looking out of place.

We would like to incorporate the

consistent colour theme and

imagery into our CD cover. We

also like the way the imagery

coincides with the music .

Although the cover art doesn’t

feature the R symbol, we are

interested in including it in our

work.

BACK COVERThe back cover features

another photograph of

Rihanna sitting and facing

down. This image is a

mid-long shot of Rihanna

wearing white. The image

has a bright fade effect

on it which is different to

the front cover which is

quite sharp in

comparison. However the

image still conveys the

theme and utilizes bright

colours.

The tracklist is located on

the right hand side of the

back cover. It is simple

and doesn’t include a

track number or running

time. The text is written all

in capitals making it easy

for people of all ages to

read. The same text used

on the front cover is also

used on the back. It also

fits in with the simplicity of

the album package.

We would like to

incorporate the range of

images into our work. I

especially like the way the

images blend really well

with the text and the

layout. Although the

theme of our CD cover is

different, portraying

Rihanna in an

unapologetic and fearless

style, we would still like

our work to be consistent.

The back cover includes

small images of the

record labels, the names

of the executive

producers and copyright

information. This is

usually to credit and to

show gratitude to those

involved in the creation of

the album. The copyright

information is written in

smaller white capital text

to make sure it doesn’t

confuse the reader with

the tracklist and the

producers.

The back cover includes

a bar-code which is

when the product is

scanned through when

somebody is purchasing

the album.

The back cover also

lists the record labels

website and Rihanna’s

website so that fans can

stay updated with new

information.

CD COVER

The CD cover doesn’t have a

picture of Rihanna on it, but it

has an image of a rose that

she poses with in other

images from the album photo

shoot. However it still

manages to keep the theme

of the album and has similar

colours.

The copyright information is

repeated on the inside outline

of the CD, meanwhile the

tracklist is also repeated

underneath the copyright

information. Both are written

in different colours so that the

information is not confusing or

hard to read.

The artist, the name of the

album, the record label,

contact websites and the

executive producers are all

repeated on the left-hand side

of the CD. This is a

convention of many other CD

covers, reminding the reader

of how to obtain new

information from the record

label and Rihanna.
