Station 5Word Problems

1. Find the height of a tree that stands on a hillside of slope 28° (from horizontal) if, from a point 75 feet down the hill, the angle of elevation to the top of the tree is 45°.

2. The baseball player in center field is playing approximately 330 feet from the television camera that is behind home plate. A batter hits a fly ball that goes to the wall 420 feet from the camera. Approximate the number of feet that the center fielder has to run to make the catch if the camera turns 8° to follow the play. (see figure)

3. An airplane flies from city A to city B, a distance of 100 miles, and then turns through an angle of 20° and heads toward city C, as indicated in the figure below. If the distance from A to C is 300 miles, how far is it from city B to city C?

4. The navigator of a ship at sea spots two lighthouses that she knows to be 2 miles apart along a straight shoreline. She determines that the angles formed between two line-of-sight observations of the lighthouses and the line from the ship directly to shore are 12° and 30°.

a) How far is the ship from lighthouse A?b) How far is the ship from lighthouse B? c) How far is the ship from shore?

5. To determine the distance between two aircraft, a tracking station continuously determines the distance to each aircraft and the angle A between them. Determine the distance a between the planes when A = 42°, b = 35 miles, and c = 20 miles.

6. To approximate the length of a marsh, a surveyor walks 300 meters from point A to point B, then turns 80 and walk 250 meters to point C. Approximate the length AC of the marsh.
