Althusser presents his work as extremely orthodox in its Marxism, but in fact it involves important new ideas.
Althusser draws on Marx’s view of ideology as a set of representations and ideas which dominate the mind.
He expanded on the Marxist theory and began to notice the way in which the human mind works.
He wrote two books in 1865 which departed from the key aspects of traditional interpretations' of Marxism. These books can now be used for in depth study on Marxism.
