About the artistLouise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was an French-American sculptor, painter and printmaker. After getting married to husband Robert Goldwater, she moved to New York in 1938. From there, she started her journey into art and enrolled on a two year painting degree. Her work quickly made it to the Brooklyn Museum Print Exhibition in 1939.

Bourgeois’s work was highly symbolic and often included themes such as loneliness, conflict, frustration, sexuality, mortality and vulnerability.

The artist’s work and influences< When creating these sculptures, Bourgeois was influenced by totem-like forms and abstract expressionist art.

Maman is ‘mother’ in French and Bourgeois associated the spider with her mother. She stated that:

‘The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.’

< Sculptures by Louise Bourgeois created using stacks of triangles made of wood to create the appearance of a human figure.

Maman (1999) Giant spider sculpture This giant spider

sculpture is one of Bourgeois’ most famous artwork. It is made of bronze, stainless steel and marble and is among the worlds largest sculptures towering at a height of 30 feet and 33 feet wide.

Famous quotes"The feminists took me as a role model, as a mother. It bothers me. I am

not interested in being a mother. I am still a girl trying to understand myself.”

"What modern art means is that you have to keep finding new ways to express yourself, to express the problems, that there are no settled

ways, no fixed approach. This is a painful situation, and modern art is about this painful situation of having no absolutely definite way of

expressing yourself.”

"I came from a family of repairers. The spider is a repairer. If you bash into the web of a spider, she doesn't get mad. She weaves and repairs

it."
