Greetings! As president of the Louisiana Association of Career and Technical Education (LACTE), I welcome you to the association’s 56th Annual Conference. Our theme for this year’s conference is “Get Connected.” One of the best opportunities for professional development is membership in and affiliation with a professional association. The need to “Get Connected” and affiliate with one’s professional association is evident in President Theodore Roosevelt’s words: “Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.”

To truly “Get Connected” to the CTE profession and then stay connected, it is important to understand the valuable contribution that ACTE and LACTE can make to your continued professional development, whether it is through the dissemination of information, publications, and/or conferences. With your commitment and connection to LACTE, I believe that we can become a cohesive association that can be a mighty force at all levels and continue to be a leader in CTE. Just think about the awesome power we have collectively as a unified group!

I hope that you will take this opportunity to recharge with new information and ideas for your classroom or work setting. Take some time to renew acquaintances and form new networking relationships with your CTE colleagues. Thank you for committing your time, money, and efforts to participate in this year’s conference and reap the professional benefits! Sincerely,

Lori Myers

President

Keynote: “When Was the Last Time You Used Your Jumper Cables?”

Have you lost your jumper cables because you have not used them in such a long time? Or perhaps you have never been the proud owner of a pair. Or maybe you don’t know what a pair of jumper cables is! “Getting Connected” takes on a new twist as your opening speaker helps you find your lost jumper cables and gives you ideas for keeping them close at hand for quick use. ROBBIE M. ALFORD, Founder of Eagles Training, is a motivational trainer who believes that basic skills can be used in relating to all people. She uses her stories to lead, unite, and inspire a cross-section of seminar participants. During thirty-four years in education, business, and government related programs her proven techniques in leadership, teambuilding, and employee interaction gained her state and national recognition as well as the respect of her fellow professionals. Currently, ROBBIE is speaking nation-wide to groups of educators, health care providers, governmental officials, business owners, service workers, and spiritual leaders— basically, just everyday, down-to-earth people. She is known for her ability to relate to people via their hearts and then their minds as she provides encouragement and understanding for their day-to-day life battles. ROBBIE has Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Family and Consumer Science. However, she says that her best teacher in life has been the experience of being a single mom of two sons! She has co-authored a cookbook, “We Knew You Wouldn’t Remember; So, We Wrote It Down”, with her sister as an outgrowth of her love of cooking for others. Now that she has retired, she works in her yard, cooks for her Dad, and works with him in his workshop.

Show Me the Money Presenters: Gary Weese, John Easley, & Pete Darling Location: Plantation

How about that program! What is the difference between theirs and yours? You might just need recognition. How do you get that recognition? Have you looked into different avenues to get your program recognized? Let me show you the way.

Design Your Future: Chief Architect Home Design Software Debbie Gray, Gray Technologies Location: Red River C

Standardized training improves the image of the industry and creates a verifiable national pool of construction, maintenance, and pipeline personnel. As industries compete more fiercely for fewer qualified craft people, an accredited training program offering industry-recognized credentials and a

Food Safety: Inhibiting Microbial Growth Presenter: Kathy Conerly, Agriscience Educator, Zachary High School Location: Red River A

Food safety is a major consumer concern. Join us to investigate the ability of chemical additives to inhibit microbial growth. How have food manufacturers developed methods to reduce this growth to increase the safety of the food supply as well as to improve its cosmetic appearance? Discuss the trade-offs involved in using chemicals to inhibit microbial growth. Receive the lesson plan and supplies to show your students when you return to school.
