ObituariesJoan phillips
Joan “Jody” Phillips, whose father started the prominent Darby Dan Farm, died April 21 at the James Cancer Hospi-tal in Columbus, Ohio. She was 83.
Phillips’ father, John W. Galbreath, founded Darby Dan outside Columbus and later transferred the major part of the operation to Lexington on property that once was part of Col. E.R. Bradley’s historic Idle Hour Stock Farm. Darby Dan quickly became a world-class op-eration, represented by such homebred classic winners as Roberto, Chateau-gay, Little Current (all champions), and Proud Clarion. Darby Dan was the home for such renowned stallions as Ribot, Sea-Bird II, and Graustark. Phillips, who played a major role in the Darby Dan tradition, saw her son, John Phillips, be-come head of Darby Dan following the death of her brother, Daniel Galbreath, in 1995. Under the younger Phillips’ di-rection, Darby Dan continues to play an important role in racing and breeding.
Among the stakes winners Jody Phil-lips bred and/or raced alone and in partnership with family members were such prominent grade I winners as Bri-an’s Time, Memories of Silver, Plenty of Grace, Soaring Softly, Sunshine Forever, Tribulation, and Wonder Again, plus Japanese group I winner and champion Grass Wonder. Soaring Softly was voted 1999 champion grass female after win-ning the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT). Sunshine Forever was voted turf champion male of 1988.
Phillips, in partnership with her late husband, James “Wally” Phillips, cam-paigned homebred stakes winners Fap-piano Road and Rampart Road.
Phillips devoted time to numerous organizations. At Ohio University, she served as chairman of the board of trustees and was a lifetime member of the college’s foundation. She also was a founding member of the school’s Col-lege of Osteopathic Medicine.
In addition to her son, Phillips’ survi-vors include daughters Dianne, Debbie, and Cindy.
James brackenVeteran South Florida trainer James
Bracken died unexpectedly April 19. He was 90.
Bracken was born in Charleston, Mo., and began his racetrack career gallop-ing horses at 18 at Jefferson Park in New Orleans. After a brief career as a jockey, he then worked as an outrider, assistant starter, and jockey agent.
As an agent, his clients included Hall of Famers Johnny Adams, Bill Hartack, Bill Shoemaker, Walter Blum, and Ja-cinto Vasquez.
Bracken started training in 1976 and made South Florida his home. During his career, he sent out 1,271 winners from 6,973 starters. A total of 37 of them were stakes winners. In 1990, he sent out Primal to win the Donn Handicap (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park.
Bracken trained for a time for the famed Tartan Stable. His charges for the prominent stable included Ponche, for whom a stakes at Calder Race Course is named. Ponche won 16 races for Brack-en, including several stakes.
Among the top all-time trainers at Calder, Bracken led the standings for four seasons: the 1984 and 1985 Calder meets and 1984/85 and 1989/90 Tropi-cal meets. He is fifth on the all-time races won list for Calder, with 793 victo-ries. His 231 wins at Tropical place him eighth on that all-time list. Bracken was inducted into the Calder Hall of Fame in 2000.
Bracken’s other stakes winners in-cluded Billie Osage, Cottage Flower, Cut the Charm, Medievel Victory, Ride the Rails, Silvered Silk, and Wings of Des-tiny.
Bracken is survived by his wife of 46 years, Micki, and daughters Candace, Lynn, and Darlene.
