JOHN LILL PLAYS BEETHOVENFri 6 Nov, 7.30pm, £25/£20/£5* Sonata No.8 in C minor, Op 13 ‘Pathétique’ Sonata No.23 in F minor, Op 57 ‘Appassionata’ Sonata No.14 in C# minor, Op 27/2 ‘Moonlight’ Sonata No.32 in C minor, Op 111

A rare Glasgow recital appearance by John Lill CBE, performing the composer with whom he is so inextricably linked: Beethoven.

GOLDBERG VARIATIONSAlexandre TharaudSun 8 Nov, 2pm, £20/£15/£5*

Perhaps the most compelling and absorbing musical journey of all: Bach takes a short aria of heart-breaking beauty as the inspiration for 30 different treatments each of them a miniature tour de force. Alexandre Tharaud has made his name in music of Bach’s time, playing with exactly the fire and delicacy required.

“The French pianist’s restless energy and esprit are infectious throughout.”GUARDIAN

RICHARD GOODE PLAYS MOZART & BRAHMSSun 8 Nov, 6pm, £20/£15/£5*

Mozart: Sonata No.8 in A minor, K.310/300d Brahms: Sechs Klavierstucke, Op. 118 Mozart: Sonata No.15 in F major, K.533/494 Brahms: Four Pieces, Op 119

To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut: “If this isn’t stunning, what is?” A desert island programme of simply gorgeous music performed by one of the greatest living pianists.

“Goode’s playing throughout was organic and inspired” NY TIMES

PHILIP GLASS: ETUDESMaki NamekawaSat 7 Nov, 7.30pm, £20/£15/£5*

With typical modesty, Philip Glass spoke about starting to write his Etudes because he wanted to become ‘a better player.’ As time has passed their number has grown to 20 and they now constitute one of the major cycles of works for the piano. It takes a full evening to perform them and Maki Namekawa – “who totally became one with the music” (Guardian) – is the only pianist who dares this mammoth undertaking. THE GLASGOW

NEW MUSIC EXPEDITIONFri 6 Nov, 9.30pm, £5-£7.50

Scotland's newest and most exciting New Music ensemble take to the stage to perform world premieres from composers Jay Capperauld, Richard Greer and Euan Ferguson. GNME's Sinae Lee is joined by Robertas Lozinskis to perform this specially composed and virtuosic programme of new work for two pianos.

The Glasgow New Music Expedition is an ensemble drawn from the best young and emerging musicians based, trained or from Scotland, alongside a few more experienced ones. Launched this year to critical acclaim and sold out audiences, they are dedicated to performing music by young, emerging and established composers with a special focus in supporting composers and artists based, trained or from Scotland.

The Piano Lounge is new this year: two afternoon-long sessions led by two of Scotland’s top young pianists: one classical and one jazz. The idea is to keep things informal and relaxed, so you can come for the whole afternoon, or drop in and out depending on what you fancy. Saturday’s programme is a packed afternoon of masterpieces with the piano at its heart and is curated by Alasdair Beatson. He is joined by his regular partners, Alexander Janiczek (violin), Rachel Spencer (violin), Scott Dickinson (viola) and Philip Higham (cello). Sat 7 Nov, 1pm, £5 / £15 for all four: Schubert: Piano Trio in Eb, D929 Sat 7 Nov, 2.30pm, £5 / £15 for all four:Mozart: Piano Quartet in Gm, K478 Sat 7 Nov, 3.30pm, £5 / £15 for all four:Debussy: Violin Sonata in GmFaure: Cello Sonata in Gm Sat 7 Nov, 5pm, £5 / £15 for all four:Brahms: Piano Quintet, Op 34

EUAN STEVENSON AND FRIENDS Sun 8 Nov, 2pm, £5 / £15 for all three

The fine young Scottish pianist hosts a swinging hour of jazz with longtime collaborators including Dave Newton (piano), Konrad Wisniewski (sax) and Andrew Sharkey (bass). Expect some standard and some new adventures.

LIAM NOBLE SOLO Sun 8 Nov, 4pm, £5 / £15 for all three

Eclectic (think of a range that could include Joe Zawinul, My Fair Lady and Elgar), virtuosic, phenomenally inventive: we’re delighted to bring Liam Noble to The Piano for the first time to give us an hour of solo magic. "a brilliant pianist who hardly plays a solo without at least one turn of phrase that brings you to the edge of your seat." GUARDIAN

GWILYM SIMCOCK & IIRO RANTALA Sun 8 Nov, 6pm, £10 / £15 for all three

Meet not one, but two of the hottest jazz pianists of the moment. Iiro Rantala captivated audiences at The Piano a few years back and has the honour of having sold the biggest number of CDs after a gig of any pianist who has appeared here! Gwilym Simcock has performed both jazz and classical many times. They’ve duetted in many venues around Europe and London over the past five years and bring their unique fusion to Glasgow for the very first time.

Two composers, both alike in dignity…and two gloriously tuneful takes on Shakespeare’s greatest love story. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet is the epitome of Romantic music, while Sergei Prokofiev brought the star-crossed lovers to the USSR and gave us some of the 20th century’s most heartfelt melodies. Peter Oundjian lavishes real feeling on the first of our birthday salutes to Prokofiev, while renowned pianist Xiayin Wang is sure to strike sparks off Khachaturian’s showstopping concerto.
