Behind every great business, there’s a great woman.

In the case of Walt’s Tire Factory, there are two —

a mother and daughter. Sherri has been involved in the

business with her husband, Walt Franczyk, for 26 years.

Daughter Melanie has been involved for four years.

Between them, they are responsible for accounting

functions, managing the taxes, ordering parts, service

writing and being Walt’s personal assistants. (lol)

With their help, Walt’s has become one of Yelm’s most

trusted and respected businesses offering tires, wheels,

alignments, brakes, tune-ups, preventative maintenance,

oil changes and general automotive repair.

Stop by Walt’s for great service

with a personal touch.

Thurston County Fair, 2012 1

The annual Thurston County Fair, a

family-friendly event, is Aug. 1-5 at the

fairgrounds in Lacey.

Originally created in 1817, the fair has

become a local tradition for people of all

ages. “It’s an amazing place where the com-

munity really comes together,” Thurston

County Fair manager Rick Storvick said.

This is Storvick’s 16th year as the fair’s

manager.

The fair includes numerous events in-

cluding animal showing, art viewing, mu-

sical acts, competitions, food and much

more.

People from all across Thurston Coun-

ty participate in the fair.

This year, up to six area schools will be

contributing science and art projects cre-

ated by students.

“This (the fair) happens because of the

help of the local people,” Storvick said.

This year’s event will include some new

attractions as well.

One of the new attractions planned for

this year’s fair is the “Reptile Man” from

Oregon.

The Reptile Man will demonstrate

how he works with reptiles from lizards to

snakes.

Fair attendees will be able to view the

exhibit, as well as take pictures with the

different reptiles.

“That is a place I will stay away from

because I’m afraid of snakes,” Storvick

said jokingly.

In addition to snakes, other animals to

be exhibited include a small alligator.

The fair will be hosting a few different

musical performances this year.

One of the new performers coming to

the stage is MothRider.

MothRider is an electronic-genre dee-

jay who will perform on his electronic set

8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3.

Among the other performers are the

Best F-Tigers Forever, an Indie band from

the Olympia area.

Best F-Tigers will perform original mu-

sic on the Les Schwab stage 8 p.m. Thurs-

day.Per fair tradition, visitors can expect a

variety of fair food options.

This year’s fair fare includes every-

thing from barbecue to Greek gyros and

shaved ice.

One vendor is scheduled to demon-

strate cookware by cooking food in front

of viewers and even letting them enjoy his

creations following each demonstration.

Another newer attraction is the “Nose

Work” competition.

This competition was first introduced at

last year’s fair. This competition is held on

Friday and Sunday afternoons.

The “Nose Work” competition consists

of dogs and their owners going through an

obstacle course.

The event also features demonstrations

by some of the dogs and their trainers.

Demonstration will include showing

how well a dog can smell, and some help-

ful methods for training them to sniff out

certain things.

On Wednesday, Aug 1, the fair will hold

its “One Buck Wednesday” promotion.

That day, at the gate, attendees who do-

nate a food item for local food banks, are

admitted for $1.

The rides for that day are also $1 each

for visitors.

This is the fair’s sixth year holding the

“One Buck” promotion.

Storvick said the fair usually collects

tons of food that day.

On Friday, Aug. 3, the Thurston County

Fair will be promoting its Military Appre-

ciation Day. Admission to all military per-

sonnel and their dependents will cost $2.

This is the first year the fair will have

a full discount day for military members.

“We have a huge military community,

and few retired military on our fair board,”

Storvick said.

“It is absolutely appropriate to show

some appreciation.”

During Military Appreciation Day, the

Army will be bring a Hummer to display.

The United States Marine Corps will

bring a chin-up bar and hold competitions

to see who can do the most chin-ups.

Both military attractions will be at the

fair for the full day, and are open to all.

“It’s astonishing how many (chin-ups)

they can do,” Storvick said.

The fair will also be making it easier

for Yelm residents to purchase tickets.

The Thurston County Fair and True

Value in Yelm are partnering to sell fair

tickets.

Before Tuesday, July 31, adults can buy

admission tickets for $5 each and children

for $4 at the hardware store, located along

Yelm Avenue.

The store will also be selling armbands

and tickets for fair rides.

“You don’t have to drive all the way out

here (to Lacey) to get a ticket,” Storvick

said.Once the fair begins, attendees will

only be able to purchase armbands and ad-

mission tickets at regular prices.

An event planned for 8:30 a.m. Satur-

day, Aug. 4, is the annual breakfast hosted

by the Thurston County Board of Commis-

sioners.

The commissioners will be serving a

free breakfast for attendees who have paid

fair admission.

Breakfast is available until 10 a.m.

“You can eat until your heart’s con-

tent,” Storvick said.

There are a couple of surprise events

planned throughout the fair for the attend-

ees to enjoy, Storvick said.

The events which have not been listed

in the event calendar will be revealed the

day of each event at the fairgrounds.

“I can’t talk about them, but they are

good ones,” Storvick says.

Roy woman’s lavender hobby

grows into successful business

Steven Wyble

Barbara Hulscher admires the lavender fields on her property in Roy. The property includes about 1,000 lavender plants.

By Steven WybleNisqually Valley News

What started as a hobby for Barbara Hulscher grew into a business success story.

Mountain Meadow Lavender in Roy got its start as a small lavender “test garden” on Hulscher’s property in 2001. Today, the Hulscher’s property is home to about 1,000 lavender plants where peo-ple from near and far come to walk the lavender fields, take home their own plants, or purchase a variety of products made from the plants.

Initially, Hulscher said she sold lavender bou-quets and demand kept growing.

“People kept asking for more products that were made from lavender and it just got me going,” she said. “I talked to some of the farms in Sequim and asked for any information they could give me and what they thought (about going into business) and everything and everybody said, ‘Go for it.’”

The Hulschers put in their large lavender field in 2006, and added a gift shop in 2007 that offers a wide variety of products made from lavender, including soaps, body lotions and bath salts — all made in Washington.

She also sells loose lavender removed from its stem, sometimes in large quantities, she said. This summer, she sold 60 pounds of it for Sequim’s lavender festival.

“They had run out and they needed more so they came clear over here and got mine,” she said. “I do sell some of the loose lavender wholesale, but most of the time it’s just to my regular cus-tomers.”

Even though getting into the lavender business seemed to fall into Hulscher’s lap, she said she

pursued the endeavor with a lot of confidence. She’s no stranger to the professional or business world, she said; she used to be a paralegal and taught for Bates Technical College’s legal assis-tant program. Her husband Jerry is a semi-retired lawyer, and she used to help him operate his law business.

Hulscher said her passion for lavender makes a visit to Mountain Meadow Lavender more than just a get-in, get-out shopping trip.

“I give a lot of personal service,” she said. “When someone comes to a buy a plant, it’s not like you go into a nursery and you buy a plant and you walk out with it.”

“When they buy plants from me, I’m giving them information on where to put it, how to plant it, what areas they should plant it in, and their landscaping plan. So what I think puts me ahead of a lot of people is I spend a lot of time with my customers.”

That extra personal touch gives Hulscher the opportunity to indulge in what she said was her favorite part of running the business — connecting with people.

Citing one example, Hulscher said a couple visiting the area from Argentina this summer saw her website and decided to come out to the farm.

“We showed them a couple of our machines that we use to clean the lavender off the stem after we harvest it, and I talked to her for a long time on how I got started and everything,” Hulscher said. “She and her husband spent like two hours here.”

“I think what I love most about this business is being able to communicate with a lot of the people who come in.”
