As they say: “Love it or lose it!” We have come to a time in history where preserving the earth should become our most important pursuit. Everyone needs to learn to live with this in mind.
We have gone through a period where many of us have been disconnected with nature. Thankfully now, many people are starting to examine their lifestyle and question the way they live. Simple changes are easy to achieve. Switching off, recycling and conserving are all a matter of prioritising and paying attention. Additional benefits that come from these practices are plentiful: better health, cost saving and the satisfaction
of knowing you are doing your bit.
Here's an example of a great initiative to help get the message out there. In Denmark, the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers is set to install two exercise bikes hooked up to generators. Guests will be invited to jump on and start pedaling. If they produce enough electricity they will be given a free meal. Ten watt hours of electricity, is the amount needed to earn your meal. This is part of a bid to encourage guests to get fit, reduce their carbon footprint and save electricity and money. Just imagine if you had that kind of set up at home: no gym fees or electricity bills and you'd get fit!
Our Be Well feature shows us just how much of a healing storehouse the earth and its resources are. Most of our best selling supplements come directly from nature. We need to recognise the earth as this amazing but fragile provider and do whatever we can to preserve it. We need a group effort, if everyone does their bit, it will have the impact needed. See how many of the changes recommended in this issue you are able to do. Facebook us with your progress and you could win one of our green friendly prizes.
Yours in healthDr Sean Gomes, Co-founder

TOUCHED BY EARTH - It really is true that walking barefoot on the grass, watching sunsets, breathing in a forest, smelling flowers and climbing a sand dune grounds, stabilises and makes us happy and balanced. Studies have proven that connecting to the earth is fundamental to health and wellness. Physical contact with nature transfers natural electrical energy to the body. An institute called the ‘Earthing Institute’ claims modern lifestyle has disconnected us from the earth’s energy, making us more vulnerable
to stress and illness. They claim the earth’s energy upholds the electrical stability of our bodies and serves as a foundation for vitality and health. “We are bioelectrical beings living on an electrical planet. In an age of rampant chronic disease, reconnecting with the Earth’s energy beneath our very feet provides a way back to better health.” So when we talk about recharging our batteries, it’s a fact, that’s what we do. Even the vibration of the products we use has an effect on us. I have decided to choose organic every time, even if I have to use less.
INSTANT FIX - It’s so comforting to mix up a cup of cocoa with hot milk. This brand is produced following strict organic standards. You can also use the cocoa powder as an ingredient in raw food sweet treats like sunflower and dates with a bit of apple juice mixed together and rolled in sesame seeds and cocoa. Goodlife Organic Sweet Cocoa 150g R27.99
CLEVER CLEANING - I really wish I had known about the Sputnik when I was a student and couldn’t afford a washing machine. This eco-friendly washing machine is compact enough to take camping. It is portable, doesn’t require electricity and uses minimal soap and water. A patented high pressure system pumps soapy water into fabric for clean laundry in minutes. Simply turn the handle a few times to make it work. Turning is non-strenuous and easy to do. You can also do small loads without feeling guilty about wastage and you can use it for all your delicate fabrics. Wonderwash Sputnik Washing Machine R399
SPICY TREAT - Chai tea is so delicious, especially if you are trying to cut back coffee, the spices give you a kick and are naturally stimulating. I like mine with milk and honey, or you can use soya. Some people prefer it black. The Rooibos and Honey Bush varieties are lighter than the Black tea option. REGULARS
ROSE FRAGRANCED - Soy candles are the most incredible invention, as they melt you can drip the wax into your hand and use it as a moisturiser. Warm moisturiser is heavenly. Soybean burns at a lower temperature than normal wax so it doesn’t burn. My favourite is the Wellness Warehouse Rose Geranium. It has a gorgeous fragrance and is totally green friendly. Soy is a longer burning alternative to standard wax and excludes paraffin oil and harmful chemicals. Wellness Rose Geranium Soy Candle R99.99
ANTI-AGEING SECRET - Baobab oil is my greatest secret. I love it. At night I use it as an anti-ageing moisturiser and apply it directly on my face. Baobab is known as a fantastic all-round healing and beauty aid. It is packed with Vitamin D and has all the Omegas. Use it to soften and restructure skin, improve elasticity, regenerate cells, moisturise skin and hair. It is a non-drying oil and especially good for sunspots, stretch marks, scarring, eczema and psoriasis, dermatitis and skin cancer. It can be applied directly or mixed with your favourite natural product. Eco Products Pure Baobab Oil 30ml R90, 50ml R116, 100ml R191
MULTI PURPOSE MAGIC - Virgin Coconut oil is a new discovery for me. A high saturated fat content means the oil does not oxidise and so limits the development of trans-fatty acids and free radicals in the oil. Traditional cooking oils are easily damaged when
heated and create exposure to free radicals and oxidised fat. It also has a low calorie count and is said to speed up metabolism.
It is antiviral, antifungal and anti-ageing. I use it in cooking, as a spread and also use it on my skin and hair. Kapruka Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Coconut Oil 200ml R48.99, 500ml R99.99
Here are 17 ways you can consider the earth by changing the way you
run your kitchen from cooking to food preparation and everything in between.
Eat more green: think about sustainability - where does your food come from and what processes are involved from the origin to your plate. Eat more organic fruit, vegetables and grains. Organic means no pesticides or dangerous chemicals polluting our water streams and damaging the soil, creatures and ourselves.

Eat less meat: cows, pigs, sheep and poultry are among the world's greatest environmental threats, according to the UN
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The livestock industry is degrading land, contributing to the greenhouse effect, polluting water resources, and destroying biodiversity.
Choose veldt fed: Just when you were thinking, boo hoo no biltong, there is a more favourable option, choose meat from Veldt
fed animals, make sure produce is free from growth hormones, feedlots, pesticides and antibiotics.
Cook with cast iron: heavy cast iron pots retain so much heat once they are hot you can switch off the power and leave food to
cook in the pre generated heat. They also last a lifetime so it’s a once-off purchase. A pressure cooker is another energy saving option.
Double up: Use stacking pots where one fits on top of the other or steam baskets so you
can layer the food you cook. Or cook two veg in the same pot, you can always use a slotted spoon to remove one if it cooks faster or add the second veg in relay.
One pot cooking: Dishes like stews, soups, stir-fry’s and curries only need one pot. This means
one power source and less washing up. The same goes for dishes, aim to prepare and serve in the same bowl. You can even serve from your pan or pot if you have a good looking brand. Just wipe around the rims and tops to make it presentable.
Cook fresh: Avoid excess packaging and processing by cooking from fresh produce – it’s healthier as well.
Go raw: cut out conversations about power saving and pots by going raw. This has become
a very popular health choice, people on raw diets swear by increased energy levels and a sense of wellbeing.
Keep it closed: Gazing into the fridge aimlessly means cold air is lost and more energy is needed to bring the temperature
to what it was. Open the door to get what you want and close it again. The same goes for the oven, when you open the oven door heat escapes.
Kettle quantity: Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need. Boiling a whole kettle full is wasted if you are making one
cup of tea. Alternatively boil up a whole kettle and store boiled water in a flask for the next cup.
Cut it thin: Food cut thinner, cooks quicker. Make potato chips thinner, slice veg into smaller parts, even meat cuts
can be sliced or pounded into thinner versions.
Minimise waste: Plan your meals so you don’t end up throwing half your fridge contents away. Buy what you
know you will eat. It helps to go grocery shopping when you are not hungry, you will buy more reasonably than if you are ravenous.
Be an ecotarian: From vegetarian we have developed all manner of variations, a pescatarian who eats fish, a
flexitarian who mostly eats a plant-based diet but will eat chicken, fish or meat occasionally. An ecotarian makes food choices based on environmental impact (organic and mostly plant-based, in season, low mileage, unpackaged, minimal carbon footprint food).
Eat it all: Rather than peeling your fruit and veggies and wasting valuable fibre, scrub the outside with a veggie brush and
eat the whole lot. Be strictly organic if you do this you don’t want to end up eating residual pesticides.
Burn some calories: Ditch electrical appliances in favour of manpower. Whipping cream, beating eggs and mixing batter
by hand will save power and burn calories at the same time.
Grow your own: Edible gardens are in. Instead of planting shrubs, plant things like broccoli, carrots and green
peppers. This eliminates packaging, transport and a host of processing. You can also do herb boxes and grow sprouts in the kitchen.
Avoid bottled water: Use a refill bottle and put a filter on your tap.
Bake bountifully: If you have a big oven, double up on dishes by cooking two or three at the same time. If different
temperatures are needed, do them one immediately after the other to save on warm up time.

I love this pan because you can use it on the stove top and put it in the oven as well. It uses a new technology called Thermolon which is heat resistant up to 450 degrees Celcius. Many other non-stick coatings, when heated above 260 degrees Celcius, release toxic chemicals caused by PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene). GreenPan is an eco-friendly cookware company. Their products are a unique, safer alternative to the traditional non-stick kitchen products.
Green Tea is a potent anti-oxidant. Studies show it reduces the risk of many forms of cancer, and has the ability to stabilise blood lipids, making it part of an overall cardiac care regimen. Green Tea drinking is a great habit to cultivate. Get the loose tea or buy it in bags.

Organically grown fruit, veggies and grains are proven to have more nutrients especially those like Vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus and less exposure to nitrates and pesticide residue than food grown using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
A comprehensive test done on strawberries showed the organic berries had significantly higher antioxidant activity and concentrations of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds. They also had a longer shelf life. To be organically certified, land must be free from prohibited substances for at least three years. Organic standards have criteria that apply to soil fertility, application of manure, crop rotation and composting. Producers need to follow a National List of Acceptable and Prohibited Materials concerning pest control treatments, fertilizers and seed treatments. All agricultural materials are evaluated for long-term effects on the environment even if they are natural. Organic agriculture builds soil health and shows responsible stewardship towards the earth.

Think about this – a shocking seventy percent of all our waste
can be converted into compost or re-used yet we throw it all
in the trash and overburden landfills.
Pretend you live in a place with no rubbish removal and this will make it much easier to dispose of your waste efficiently. Firstly, put all your organic waste - that means fruit and veggie peels and seeds, left-over food or spoiled food into a small bucket with a lid. By separating this from the rest of your trash, your bin won’t ever smell, nor will it get opened by animals looking for food. Once a day or depending how quickly it fills up, empty it into a composter. You can buy one or make your own. Choose a brand that is efficient and doesn’t smell so you can keep it in the kitchen. Secondly, keep paper items separately, include all your empty cartons and packaging. Shred them and use them to start the braai or make a small fire and burn them once a week. Recycle glass bottles for storing food or making candle holders. Plastic can be deposited at a recycling centre.

Turn all your kitchen scraps into an organic, slow release fertilizer easily and quickly. All you have to do is add the scraps to a bucket, add the bran, and walk away. The microbes will do the rest. Bokashi means fermented organic matter in Japanese. It uses a selected group of microorganisms to anaerobically ferment waste introduced through a carrier like bran. A closed system means no smells or insects. Bokashi breaks down heavier items like meat, fish and cheese. The process takes less than two weeks. Once fermentation is complete, bury waste directly in the soil.

A substantial portion of existing pharmaceuticals are plant-based. Scientists haven’t analysed even a fifth of the plants available for healing properties. But with extensive deforestation making countless species extinct, it looks like they won’t ever get the opportunity to know them all. We will lose the power of these plants even before discovering their healing properties. As a noted conservationist explained, "Even severe pollution is reversible, but species extinction is irreversible."
As we harvest more medicine, there is increased pressure on the wild plant population. Over harvesting puts medicinal species at risk and makes conservation of species ever more important. According to a report from the Centre for Biological Diversity about 15,000 medicinal plant species may be threatened with extinction worldwide. Experts estimate the earth is losing at least one potential major drug every two years. While organisations like the (ISSC-MAP) the International standard for Sustainable Wild Collection of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants are working to create more regulation, we need more attention to conserve the medicinal treasures in the wild.
We are reliant on our natural resources. More than 80 percent of South Asia’s 1.4 billion people have no access to modern health care; they rely instead on traditional medicine using native species.
EBRAHIM SAMBA, THE WORLD HEALTH
ORGANISATION’S REGIONAL DIRECTOR
FOR AFRICA SAYS ABOUT 80% OF THE
POPULATION IN SOUTH AFRICA USE
TRADITIONAL MEDICINE. MOST OF THIS
MEDICINE IS PLANT BASED.
In China, medicinal plant use has been well documented over four thousand years. Over five thousand wild plant species have been used in healing preparations both to prevent and cure disease. Many of the indigenous and local communities have immense knowledge that can benefit biotechnology, agriculture, pharmaceutical development, and health care. By restoring a connection with nature we might realise the medicines we take come from further than the shelf at the store and that we need to keep the earth intact for our survival. We can also gain respect for the incredible intelligence carried by nature. For instance, all plants have a purpose. Even plants growing wild along the street and in fields are likely to have qualities that can be used to detox the body, as liver cleansers, to reduce inflammation, to enhance prostrate health or help digestion.
According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat, the overwhelming direct cause of deforestation is agriculture. Subsistence farming is responsible for 48% of deforestation; commercial agriculture is responsible for 32%; logging is responsible for 14% and fuel wood removals make up 5% of deforestation. Plant- derived anti-cancer drugs like taxol, first isolated from the Pacific yew, save at least 30,000 lives per year in the United States. Most of our chronic diseases rely on plant based medicine to cure them. In the 1960s, James Lovelock formulated the Gaia hypothesis which he explains that through the global consciousness of Mother Gaia, all living things on this planet, from their most primordial instincts, are constantly interacting with their environment to ensure the harmony, balance and continuity of life. Live in a balance with Mother Nature and health and healing are yours; violate Her laws and get out of balance, and you pay the price in suffering and disease. In this sense, all medicine and healing can be seen as a system of ecology.
Give thanks for the plant intelligence we use almost every day in our supplements and medicines and connect with nature by spending time outside, listening to the birds, looking at the flowers and plants, noticing where the moon is in her cycle, respecting the wild winds and enjoying the gentle breezes.

12 everything you need to live life well
Natural ecosystems moderate the climate; and roots from plants filter
disease organisms and pollutants. Yet we have become so detached from our natural world that we are able to unthinkingly destroy our resources.
As English poet D H Lawrence said:
“This is what is the matter with us. We are bleeding at the roots, because we are cut off from the earth and sun and stars.”
All medicine comes from nature, even synthesised and chemically reproduced medicine needs nature’s recipe to make it. Earth is a treasure chest of healing power. Plants, bark, fungi, and flowers as well as rainforests, streams, mineral rich rocks and soil all have healing properties. Rainforest destruction presents a serious threat to medicine, the pharmaceutical industry and those who need treatment. If we destroy our natural resources we also lose our healing elements.

How loving the earth loves you back
By Glenn-Douglas Haig
As we strive to become environmentally aware, to tread lightly on the earth, it’s worth pausing to understand how we benefit by changing wasteful patterns.
The most obvious benefits are physical: organic farming is more sustainable and healthier for our bodies. Eliminating toxic chemicals eases pollution and creates a healthier earth. Preserving natural resources will ensure quality of life for a longer period. The physical benefits of loving our planet are almost endless.
My area of interest however, is our inner world, and how that is affected by becoming more aware of our larger home.
We have mental, emotional and spiritual inner worlds. All of us face obstacles in these worlds at some time. Trauma, like losing a loved one or a business collapsing can overwhelm on all three inner levels. Smaller, daily events may be challenging in one or two inner areas. The point is: obstacles of a mental, emotional or spiritual nature make us less equipped to deal with external events.
Twelve years of personal development work has shown me that people more in tune with natural surroundings and respectful and aware of their environment, tend to have fewer inner obstacles to deal with. It is almost like being environmentally aware and being personally aware go hand in hand. A word of caution however: this does not mean those of us obsessed by being earth-friendly are necessarily totally self-aware… everything has its polarities!
The inner benefits of tending to the earth and nurturing our environment are substantial. Greening projects in urban slums show huge improvement in a community’s collective and personal self-esteem. Vegetable gardening is a powerful grounding and de-stressing hobby that helps improve creative thinking, lift depression, encourage compassion and instill gratitude. It teaches patience and responsibility and rewards with achievement and self-respect. When this awareness extends outwards to respect the environment, it indicates emotional intelligence and the highest of human qualities: compassion. So go on, love the earth and love yourself.

HEALING GIFTS FROM GAIABefore we had access to extensive pharmacies and drugs, we would use natural remedies taken from the plants and trees around us.
Many of the supplements we take still come from the same sources except we don’t gather them and make teas and broths out of them, we generally get them in pill form off the shelf. That doesn’t mean we should forget or lose respect for the fact the earth supplies our healing needs. We celebrate fungi, algae, grasses, flowers, plants and herbs and acknowledge their healing gift to us.

Algae harvested from Upper Klamath Lake in Southern Oregon is the most nutrient dense food on the planet, containing glyco-proteins, vitamins, minerals, simple carbohydrates, lipids and biologically active enzymes. It doesn’t take much energy to convert this superfood into fuel, because of this the algae is a fast, efficient and energizing way to improve any diet.
Chinaherb medicines consist mostly of plant roots, while others of leaves, flowers, seeds and fruits. The majority of the herbs in a formula will address the aspect of disharmony in the body. The focus of treatment may either be on the acute symptoms, or on the underlying root cause of the imbalance. Natural formulations External Heat and Wind Heat are excellent for colds and coughs.
A combination of 4 organic fresh plant extracts acts as a kidney tonic preventing kidney stones and works as a potassium sparing diuretic.
Bettamed Cleanse & Recover is an anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial immune supplement that removes infection from the bloodstream. Bach Flower Remedies correct emotional imbalances with distilled flower essences. Thirty eight remedies cover a variety of emotional conditions. As Dr Bach explains:
Olive is for: Those who have suffered mentally or physically and are so exhausted and weary they feel they have no more strength to make any effort. Daily life seems hard work without pleasure.
Honeysuckle is for: Those who live mostly in the past, reminiscing a time of great happiness or memories of a lost friend, or ambitions unfulfilled. They do not expect happiness as they have had in the past.
Crab Apple is for: Those who feel they have something not quite clean about themselves. Often it is something of apparently little importance: in others there may be more serious disease which is almost disregarded compared to the one thing on which they concentrate.

Going GreenTHERE IS NO PLANET B Brought to you by
Nicole Sherwin - Editor of Simply Green Magazine
In our special feature this month Nicole Sherwin takes us on a brief tour of the pioneers dedicated to highlighting global warming and urgent planetary concerns: some are managing to mobilize awareness on a huge scale. Awareness is one thing but it’s up to us to make significant changes and have a green lifestyle as a non-negotiable part of living. Do your bit and the combined effort will make a cumulative and noticeable difference. Eco Diva and Editor of Simply Green Magazine, Nicole Sherwin reports.
Controversy regarding global warming is rife. Is releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere a massive contributing factor to global warming? Some scientists say yes, others are not convinced. Al Gore, former United States Vice President brought a passionate and inspirational look at his fervent crusade to halt global warming’s deadly progress in his documentary, An inconvenient Truth, directed by Davis Guggenheim. Alongside bracing facts exposing myths and misconceptions and looking at future predictions is the story of Gore’s personal journey: from idealistic college student who saw a massive environmental crisis looming; to a young Senator facing a harrowing family tragedy that altered his perspective. The documentary showcases many well respected scientists with a believable case that global warming is largely created by carbon emissions. Al Gore’s message: Global warming is no longer just a ‘political’ issue but rather, the biggest moral challenge facing our civilization today.
Other documentary filmmakers like Bjorn Lomborg (a political scientist from Denmark) who produced Cool It is well known as ‘The Skeptical Environmentalist’. He shows scientists with a different view of global warming and solutions to climate change, environmental pollution and other major world problems. Lomborg argues many elaborate and expensive actions considered to stop global warming cost hundreds of billions of dollars without the same return on investment. These, he says, are often based on emotional rather than
scientific assumptions, and may have very little impact on the world's temperature for centuries. Lomborg’s recommendation: Introduce a limited carbon tax in the first world and use subsidies from the first world to the third world to help fight ongoing humanitarian crises.
Richard Branson takes a different approach with his independent non-profit organisation, The Carbon War Room. This defines market-driven solutions to climate change on a remarkable gigaton-scale. It generates clever business strategies to accelerate green solutions especially where there are low expectations and weak mandates. The Carbon War Room brings together dynamic groups of thinkers and doers from different fields and facilitates discussion and solution development. Three groups comprise of Research and Intelligence; Network Engagement; and Active Operations and focus on industry sectors like Energy Supply, Forestry, Industry, Transportation, Waste Management, Residential & Commercial Buildings and Agriculture. Branson’s message: The challenge of climate change can be addressed today in a profitable way – under existing policy conditions using mature technologies.
Leonardo Di Caprio created, produced and narrated the documentary film The 11th Hour, with contributions from over 50 politicians, scientists, and environmental activists, including former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai and journalist Paul Hawken. The film looks at grave problems facing the planet's life systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction and depletion of the oceans' habitats are addressed concluding that the future of humanity is in jeopardy. Di Caprio’s message: Potential solutions can be found by calling for restorative action by reshaping and rethinking
global human activity through technology, social responsibility and conservation.
So whose way is the right way? Whether politicians, film-makers, scientists, activists, celebrities or environmentalists and whether you are for or against the arguments that global warming is caused by greenhouse gasses and carbon dioxide emissions, the deepest most fundamental message through all the presentations is that WE must take responsibility for our own actions and for our precious earth. We must do what we can to preserve our dwindling resources and we must do it in a way that makes sense, not only to our communities and ourselves, but also for the global economy.
How can this new revolution not be healthier for us? It gets us thinking; it drives us to create positive solutions and gets us active and engaged to help affect change in the world. Surely this is enough to jump onboard the hot tamale green train and become more aware, more conscious and more engaged not only in our lives and our businesses, but throughout the world. This is our one home and we do love earth. As the current President of The Carbon War Room and ex President of Costa Rica, Jose Maria Figueres says, “There is no Planet B”.

ECO NESTdid you know? You can enhance your level of wellbeing by increasing the sensory input in your surroundings. Think of all 5 senses: smell, touch, hear, see, taste and add fragrances, touchy-feely fabrics, good music, things you love and bowls of delicious snacks to your space.
ECO IDEAS ONE NIGHT A WEEKResolve to be electricity free one night a week. Slow cook food throughout the day in a solar oven so you don’t have to use the stove, switch off all the lights and use candles instead. Read poetry or tell stories instead of watching television.
GEYSER SMARTTurn off the geyser. Depending on what everyone’s routine is you can probably turn your geyser off when everyone leaves for work or school. You need only switch it on half an hour before bath time in the morning and again half an hour before ablutions at night. Most dishwashers and washing machines heat their own water and if you need a small amount of hot water in between times, just boil the kettle. Wrap an insulation blanket around the geyser and save up to 9%. Lower the geyser temperature, even 3 degrees makes a difference. You can get a timer to switch it off automatically.
UNPLUG Switch off at the plug. That means TV, cell phone chargers, microwaves, computers. Do a quick tour before bed and just trip every switch or you can do it at the mains if you know which main switch relates to which set of plugs. Dimmer switches and energy saving globes are also a good investment.
WATERWhile waiting for hot water to come through, collect the cold running water and use it to fill the kettle, dog’s bowl or water house plants. Use less water when you flush by putting a bottle filled with water in the cistern, this will displace water so it will need less to refill. If you aren’t using it, don’t run it. It’s such a habit to keep the tap running while brushing teeth, washing lettuce etc. Make an effort to switch those habits. Collect your own water - install a tank and save rainwater from the gutters to water the garden, clean the car or use in the house. Ask your plumber to re-route bath and shower water to the garden (remember to use bio-degradable soaps)
WASH & DRYNever use the dryer when sunshine can do the job. Hang clothes outside, why waste a free natural resource. Wash clothing on a lower temperature to save on heating water. Keep an extra wash basket in the bathroom for clothing that just needs to be repacked or re-hung. A t-shirt worn for half an hour doesn’t need to get washed. Hang clothing neatly so you don’t have to iron.
5 tips to turn your home into an eco-nest >
Spread the word by telling us how you can #LoveTheEarthBy @wellnews
Upcycle Before you go to the extreme of throwing/giving everything away, see if there is anything you can up-cycle. Painting a grotty table a different colour can give it a new lease on life. Look for toxin free eco friendly paints. Recover a sofa or chair, do it with organic cotton upholstery fabric. Paint an old suitcase, mount it on the wall and use it to store towels and linen. Use an old chest of drawers in the garden, open each successive drawer a little further than the one above fill them with soil and grow plants.
Have a visionRedecorating can have a profound effect on your wellbeing. Visualise exactly what type of space you want to create, find references in magazines and collect them in a file. Bear in mind that an all-white beautiful space may look appealing in a magazine but might be too sterile for your personality. Don’t forget to visualise yourself in the space. See if your space can be transformed with a small adaptation. Make a lounge cosier with some throws or a giant floor cushion. Accent a boring wall with an interesting art piece. Paint one wall a different colour. Change from curtains to blinds. Assess what is needed and start with one area at a time.
Clear some spaceClutter is the worst form of distraction and creates heavy energy. Someone I know put every item in their house on gumtree, got rid of it all and started with a completely clean slate. Getting rid of unnecessary items creates a wonderful feeling of lightness that can be extremely liberating. Less stuff means less to clean, worry about, repair and trip over. Give to charity, sell or take unwanted goods to recycling centres.
Make it functionalMake it functional by analysing what you like to do in your home. If exercise is one of your main pursuits you may want to create a home gym, if entertaining does it for you, invest in a large dining table and comfortable loungey spaces. If you work from home, section off a dedicated work
space. If your house is noisy and you value quiet, double up a wall or sound proof a room for some peace. If nature is your thing, invite the outside in with a huge double sliding door.
Green peaceCertain easy-care plants like Spekboom have carbon converting properties that naturally help remove indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene. Create some interesting plant holders with old baskets, pots or dishes and fill them with indoor plants.
We asked wellness ambassador Nicole Sherwin how she lives life well? "Besides regular exercise and eating a healthy balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables, for me living life well is all about attitude. When you wake up every morning you have to make a conscious choice to be happy, to be healthy and to feel blessed. Gratitude is the best attitude that leads to living the life you desire."

You will be surprised at how many recycled items you can find. Rugs made from woven cut up t-shirts or recycled plastic can add personality and hand made warmth. Take your healthy living to the next level, be creative, and think of
ways you can burn calories and do a good deed for the environment by reducing your carbon footprint while you exercise.
In Hong Kong a gym is using the “Power by You” concept and turning human movement into kilowatts. While the gym’s customers are working up a sweat on cycling and cross-training machines, the energy they create is used to power lighting, any excess energy is stored in a battery.
We may not have power-generating bicycles in our gyms in South Africa but there are many other ways you can get involved and do your bit for our precious planet.
Here are three innovative ideas to turn exercise into a green-workout-routine…
Join the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) and "Bicycle Cape Town" campaign and cycle to work rather than drive.
This campaign strives to see More People on Bicycles, More Often, for More Reasons and is promoting ‘green’ mobility, sharing the road safely, and the reduction of car dependence throughout Cape Town and the Western Cape.
Just by cycling to work or gym you will radically decrease your carbon footprint – and you get fit while traveling too.

Greenpop plants trees in schools, communities, and deforested areas with the aim to spread environmental awareness, uplift under-greened communities, make greening enjoyable and combat climate change. Join the Greenpop team for their ‘Day of 1000 Trees’ on Heritage Day this September. Planting a tree is like a gym session in itself. Digging, shoveling, hoisting plants provides a full upper body workout. As well as planting trees you can also attend a Sunday evening ‘Yoga for Trees’ class, participate in their reforestation festival or keep checking their green

Not only can you dance the nights away at the Rocking the Daisies music festival in October this year but you can also take part in their ‘Cycle to Daisies’ or ‘Walk the Daisies’ initiatives.
Rocking the Daisies aim to host a premier music and lifestyle festival in an environmentally and social responsible manner under the motto of ‘Play Hard, Tread Lightly’. Last year around 100 cyclists took part in an official carbon neutral cycle trip. This gave them a discount on the ticket and raised awareness about green transport. It also contributed to reducing the festivals carbon footprint.
The 110 ‘walk the daisies’ festival goers walked from Cape Town to Cloof Wine Estate in Darling. Waste was collected along the beach from Blaauwberg to Melkbos and sorted for recycling. At the end the walkers were rewarded with free tickets to the festival.
Go to www.rockingthedaisies.com for information and ticket sales.
These are just a few local suggestions on how you can double up your training needs with eco-friendly ventures. Practice any of these green workout routines and you will be reducing your carbon footprint, spending less money and best of all, you will benefit from a great sense of happiness and personal satisfaction.

It is only by making humans realise the benefit of conserving the earth
that we can instill an awareness for change.
Our connection with the earth goes so much deeper than we know, if only we take time out to explore and appreciate it. One person doing just that is psychologist Charissa Bloomberg. A traumatic swimming incident led her to an experience with dolphins that changed the course of her life. When swimming with dolphins for the first time, a back tide carried her miles away from the boat. With huge waves engulfing her, and the boat unable to get to her, she was terrified until she realised she was encircled
by a pod of six dolphins. They stayed with her for half an hour until she was rescued. During this time she felt an overwhelming feeling of pure love and protectiveness that left her changed for life and hopelessly in love with dolphins.
Her whole life is now devoted to on-going research on the healing power of these beautiful creatures. Charissa also conducts remedial excursions in Mozambique where participants swim with dolphins in the wild, as a form of healing. Throughout the decades, stories of dolphins helping and saving humans have been widely documented – it’s no wonder we are fascinated and deeply moved by them.
As Charissa testifies, “Dolphins offer unconditional love with nothing in return, and touch us on a deep level”.
Enormous emotional responses are elicited from people. Laughter, tears, deep reflection, relaxation and a feeling of being irretrievably changed are some of the responses. Some participants believe their unconditional love towards humans and

movewellopenness to accept us is part of the healing process. A more scientific approach is studying the effects of sonar emissions and vibrational sound as facilitating factors in altering mood in humans. Dolphins have natural sonar and emit ultra sound waves to communicate among themselves in what is called “echolocation”. This alone can create physiological cell and tissue change in the body. In 1971 educational anthropologist Dr Betsy Smith and later Dr Nathanson at the Dolphin Human Therapy centre in Florida studied the interaction between dolphins and children with Down’s syndrome. Confirmed positive results facilitated more centres opening world wide. Blood samples analysed before and after confirmed a change in hormones, endorphins and enzymes, as well as T-cells. Charissa has connected with programmes developed for special needs children who, after a swimming session, experience noticed improvements in cognitive function. Dolphin Assisted therapy (DAT) seeks to improve the quality of life for individuals, and their families suffering from the effects of disorders like Autism, Down's syndrome and movement disorders. It is also indicated in reducing stress, alleviating depression, increasing cognition, and improving various developmental disorders.
Results of EEG tests carried out on people who experienced echolocation, showed that the dominant human brain frequency drops from beta to alpha. Also both sides of the brain become synchronised, which means there is far better communication between the left and right sides of the brain. This integrated state is associated with heightened awareness and increased learning ability. The list of beneficial healing effects extends to improving healing in individuals with different forms of mental illness, depression, autism, attention deficit disorder, Down Syndrome, chronic fatigue chronic syndrome, muscular dystrophy, and spinal cord injuries. (Cole 1994; Cochrane & Callen 1992). Their effect is also felt on pregnant women, cancer patients, and those highly stressed.
In short, there is hardly any one who has not felt the healing power of these beautiful creatures. It is impossible to be exposed to them, (or if you are lucky, to swim with them) and not feel moved on some level.

Ingredients taken from nature have been used to help women beautify
themselves for centuries. Today we still rely on nature as a basis for the cosmetics and skin care products we use daily.
Here are some natural beauty helpers to be thankful for:
Honey
Besides being a great sugar substitute, this golden substance has many health and beauty benefits. Honey's natural antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties helps protect the skin from sun damage, helps improve the skin's healing ability and is an effective moisturiser. It also absorbs impurities from the skin, which makes it ideal as a cleanser. Honey is used in everything from shampoo to baby lotion.
Mud
Muds, taken from specific areas, contain important minerals that can be very beneficial for health and skin. Mud treatments can help relax muscles, improve blood circulation, soothe irritated skin, remove impurities and relieve common body aches. Dead Sea mud is rich in minerals excellent for cleansing and moisturising. Moor mud, also known as ‘therapeutic peat moss’ is often used to induce relaxation. Popular spa mud treatments include facials, baths and body wraps.
Botanicals
Along with all the other amazing things they do for us, plants provide so many of the ingredients used in cosmetics, fragrances, skin and hair care products. Today’s society has become increasing aware of the benefits of botanical beauty fuelling a growing demand for more organic plant-based beauty products free from harsh chemicals. Some of the most popular botanicals are aloe vera, lavender, green tea, rose and chamomile. Some algae like spirulina and even fungi are marketed for their cleansing and detox properties.
Natural Salts
Natural salts, like sea salt and rock salt, contain a number of valuable minerals with positive effects on health and appearance.Sea salt is obtained naturally by taking water from the ocean and letting it evaporate. Himalayan salt (rock salt) is mined from areas close to the Himalayas. These salts are used in a variety of today’s personal-care and beauty products, like soaps and exfoliating scrubs. Even just bathing or swimming in salt water can be therapeutic, stimulate circulation, hydrate the skin and increase moisture retention.
Fruit and vegetables
Any healthy diet includes a hearty helping of fruit and vegetables. Not only do they help cleanse and heal the body, but they also provide nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins. Often you will see carrot or apple extract in shampoos and cosmetics. Some beauty companies also use fruit and vegetable pigments to colour their cosmetics while fruit acid skin peels have also become popular. Avocados, berries, lemon and lime, cucumber, mango, coconut and olive derived products are some of the more popular skin care ingredients.

Essential oils for beauty:
Essential oils extracted from various parts of aromatic plants, are age old beauty ingredients used to moisturize, calm, tone and promote healing. They can be used aromatically, topically, or taken internally. When diluted or blended in a carrier oil, they can be applied directly to the skin to treat various conditions both physically and emotionally.
4 beauty basic essential oils:
Lavender - Lavender is widely known and used. It is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and helps speed up the healing process in minor burns, cuts and bites. A few drops in your bath or on your pillow at night can help you feel relaxed.
Chamomile - This oil is a potent anti-inflammatory and can be used in the treatment of acne or for soothing inflamed skin. It is also good for easing emotional irritability.
Grapefruit - A rich Vitamin C content will help brighten dull or tired skin. Grapefruit also has a stimulating effect on the lymphatic system and can help with water retention. Some studies cite grapefruit as helping reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Sandalwood - Often used for dehydrated skin, Sandalwood is said to increase moisture levels. A woody smell and anti-bacterial properties make Sandalwood a great aftershave tonic for men and women.

OUR PLANET EARTH, QUANTUM PHYSICS & YOU
Have you ever wondered about your connection to the earth? Why a beautiful sunset can make you feel so good? Did you know that the universe is NOT like a big machine and does not have any separate or independent parts?Quantum physics has proven that you and I are actually part of a unified field of existence, that is governed by an unfolding, dynamic intelligence – of which we are a part. Science agrees that we form part of Life itself, and that we play a vital part in its expression of itself.
Imagine owning this truth and living every day as the REAL you – a perfectly supported being that is NOT separate, but an integral part of all that is.
Join Glenn-Douglas Haig for a 2-hour workshop hosted by Wellness Warehouse in Kloof Street, and learn how to satisfy your mind and end the doubt that has plagued mankind for centuries.
