Q: I recently took my leased 2015 Honda Civic to the dealership for an inspection sticker. My

car is one year old and with 900 miles. It failedemissions. I was told I needed to drive on thehighway a few days and get some miles on it andthen come back and try again. Is this commonamong new cars or is this a problem with Hondas?

A: The issue is that the various computer monitors haven’t completed their test cycle.

For the average driver, this isn’t usually a problem.For someone who drives so little, your car justhasn’t met all the criteria for the readinessmonitors to set. Time and a bit of highway drivingshould solve the issue. If you don’t want to wait,Honda has a very specific procedure to get themonitors to go through their system testprocedures.

Q: I have a 2013 Hyundai Azera that I purchased new. At most times of the day the windshield

reflects the dashboard and makes it somewhatdifficult to see, especially when the sun is shininginto the windshield. The pebble grain finish of thedashboard and the speaker grill in the dashboardare reflected on the windshield. I tried putting a

towel on the dash but it reflects the towel and hasnot helped. I have checked the web for dashboardcovers and there are lots of companies that havethese. I’m afraid to order one of these and not getany improvement. Could it be the windshield glassis defective? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: I believe the issue has to do with the angle of the windshield and how you sit in the car. I

would try moving the seat up/down or tilting itslightly to see if it makes any difference. I wouldalso try a dark towel on the dash and see if thathelps. If the dark color works, then try a dash padcover.

Q: We need to leave our car for two months in our attached garage. What should we do to

ensure the car is okay when we return?

A: Leaving a car for two months isn’t too much of a concern. I would start with topping off all the

vital fluids, checking the coolant, filling up the gastank and adding gasoline stabilizer (Sta-Bil is onebrand). I would also inflate the tires to themaximum on the sidewall, lubricate doors, locksand open the windows slightly so the interior can

breathe. If you have any issues with mice, removeany food and buy some rodent repellant. When youreturn, there is a possibility the battery will havefully discharged. A Battery Tender or some otherautomatic float style battery charger will keep thisfrom happening. If you want to risk a dischargedbattery, back into the garage to allow easy access forjumpstarting.

Q: I just purchased a 2016 Toyota Corolla. The dealer told me I need to come back for oil

changes because of the special synthetic oil. Do Ireally need to use this special oil?

A: Like many new cars, your Corolla needs oil that meets a specific specification. It is not

necessary to use Toyota oil but an oil that meets thisspecification. Looking at oil currently available,synthetic oil is about the only oil that meets the 0W-20 specification as well as the ILSAC GF5 ratings.Since your Toyota requires the oil change yearly orevery 10,000 miles whichever comes first, syntheticoil is actually more cost effective than conventionaloil changed every 3-5000 miles in other cars.
