Staff Growth PlansAll teachers in our District are required to write a personal growth plan focused on increasing student learning. Love-land’s school improvement plan focuses on personalized learning, math, reading, and hope and engagement. Some teachers have identified specific content areas as their focus of growth while other teachers have selected to focus on In-creasing collaborative structures throughout the school year.Teachers reflect on their growth plan work in January and make additions and/or changes as they deem necessary. The end of year evaluation conference also includes further reflection and discussion about the year’s growth plan and its impact on student learning. Please know that student learning is always at the center of all that we do here at Loveland, including our growth plans.

Westside Community Schools and Children’s

Behavioral Health Partnership

A valuable collaboration is in place between Westside Com-munity Schools and Children’s Behavioral Health at Chil-dren’s Hospital & Medical Center. This partnershipallows us to address the mental health needs of our children and families districtwide. The services offered through the Student Assistance Program include free assessments and short term counseling, where students and their parents areinvited to complete two free face-to- face sessions. Chil-dren’s Behavioral Health therapists are able to help you address any cognitive, emotional, developmental or personal issues that your student or family might be facing. Students and families have two options:• Contact your Counselor, Social Worker or School Psy-

chologist for information about Children’s Behavioral Health

• Call Children’s Behavioral Health directly at 402-955- 3900 to schedule an appointment. Children’s Behavioral Health is located at 1000 North 90th Street (southwest corner of 90th & Western Streets.)

Counselor’s CornerWestside Community School’s theme for this year is GRIT. In her TED Talk, Angela Duckworth, a Pennsylvania psychologist said, “the most significant predictor of success in kids isn’t social intelligence, good looks, physical health or IQ. It’s about having stamina, sticking with your future goals – day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years – and working really hard to make that future a reality.” Here are some ways to build grit in your child:• Put a challenge in front of him/her – If your child

never triumphs or overcomes a hurdle, he/she might not develop confidence in his/her abilities.

• Promote perseverance – Show your child it takes prac-tice and hard work to become really good at something.

• Welcome boredom and frustration – Help your child understand that learning isn’t supposed to be easy all the time…being frustrated and confused is part of the journey.

• Let him/her fail and model resilience – One of the most important skills a child can learn is the ability to pick themselves up after a failure. Share your own struggles and successes.

RESPECT Plays Are Coming To Loveland

It is important for all of our students to become knowledge-able in identifying and preventing bullying in our schools. Students at Loveland have the opportunity to see a program called RESPECT on October 19th through the Loveland Community Club teacher grant fund. The RESPECT program consists of educational theater presentations paired with a group discussion led by community professionals and actor-educators.

Grades K-3 will see a presentation called “Stop and Think ” where bully behaviors are identified and prevention tech-niques are taught. Grades 4-6 will see a play called “Spelling It Out.” This play will identify bully behaviors as well and will specifically focus on the role of a bystander. Thank you LCC for providing these great opportunities for our Love-land students.

School AttendanceNebraska law mandates that schools report any student to the County Attorney who has missed more than 20 school days or the hourly equivalent (i.e., accumulation of hours missed because of tardies, early release and/or partial at-tendance days) during each school year. This includes all absences whether or not if they are excused or unexcused.

We know that regular school attendance is a key factor in the academic success of our students. We also recognize that regular school attendance helps to develop habits of punc-tuality, self-discipline and responsibility in our students. Therefore, it is important that your child attends school daily and we ask for your cooperation in reaching that goal.

Visiting ProceduresSchool safety is very important to us at Loveland. All visi-tors must ring the bell outside the main entrance, in order to enter the building. Parents and visitors may be asked to show ID if we do not recognize or if we are unsure of your identification. Visitors must report directly to the main of-fice to sign in and receive a visitor’s pass. These procedures allow for a safe learning environment for our students. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

TardinessPunctuality is an important part of our adult lives. It enhances our social as well as our work lives. Things run smoother when people are on time. This is why we address absences and tardies. Through excessive tardiness, we send the message to our child that, “It’s okay to be late.” That can also be a message that carries into their professional lives. If your child is 5 minutes late every day for school, at the end of the year they will have missed approximately 2.5 days of school. Coming in late does not set a positive tone to the beginning of a person’s day. Punctuality is a small piece of the picture of success but very important. Please make sure your child is here so he/she can get the same start as all the others in the class.

Lost & FoundAll lost & found items will be in the office during confer-ences. Please stop by and claim yours!
