Quality (“Q”) Tip Series

Q-Tip #12 Defining Myself and Our 4-H Club

Nichole Gann and Tammy Gillespie

Missouri 4-H is interested in making the best better – in our youth, our leaders and our programs. An ongo-

ing program improvement process called “Quality Matters in 4-H” is underway in Missouri. The Quality or

“Q-Tip” series includes short, research-based tips to help youth and adult leaders be more intentional about

planning 4-H club meetings and other events where members feel safe, supported and engaged in fun, in-

teractive activities.

In Q-Tip #11 we learned about how various structures can support an object. Therefore it is important to be

self-aware of the characteristics an individual possesses and how they affect the climate of the 4-H club.

Today we will analyze qualities of a 4-H club and what allows it to provide the greatest benefit to its mem-

bers. This will allow for a reflection of the strengths and areas for improvement within the organization.

Write the words “Structure” and “Chaos” on flip chart paper. Begin by asking the participants to define

these words: Structure Key words might include: schedule, comforting, support, routines, expectations,

boundaries, behavior, physical space, activities, consistency, age-appropriate, rules Chaos Key words may

include: loud, unorganized, dangerous, confusing, crazy Provide the dictionary meanings for words: Struc-

ture: the action of building; something arranged in a definite pattern of organization; coherent form or or-

ganization. Chaos: a state of things in which chance is supreme; the inherent unpredictability in behavior; a

state of utter confusion.

This activity can be used on an individual or group basis for participants of all ages. To

conclude the activity, ask “Which word currently describes our program? Your daily

activities? Which is preferable?” Explain that quality programs intentionally plan

around both personal and program structure. These two concepts were previously

discussed in Q-Tip #11.

Woodsy Vase

Supplies

• Sticks (about 1/4 inch in diameter)

• Clippers

• Glue

• Empty plastic jar

• Thick rubber bands

• Raffia or ribbon (optional)

Directions

Break or cut sticks to about an inch longer than the jar. Put two rubber bands around the jar, one inch from

the top and one inch from the bottom. Tuck sticks under both rubber bands placing them as close together

as possible.

Once the jar is surrounded with sticks, slide the rubber bands together in the middle of the jar and cover the

Save the Date! 17th Annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals is Saturday, May 19th!

Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 19, 2018 for the 17th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be playing the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1:15 p.m. game. Tickets for the game will be $25.00 each and includes a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front.

4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremo-nies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. As an added bonus the Cardinals give-away item for the game is a replica 1968 National League Championship ring. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-a-kind item. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Ticket order forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension office, or on the web at www.mo4h.missouri.edu. Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 9, 2018. Tickets usually sell out be-fore the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs, and tickets to other Cardinal baseball games. Funds raised through the raffle support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs. 4-H Day with the Cardinals has raised $77,000.00 to support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs in the first 16 years. Complete information about the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle is on the ticket order form.
