David Carroll Shaw, son of Rotary President David Shaw; chose Rotary Park as the site of his Leadership Project for Rank of Eagle Scout. A leadership project requires that the scout organize, plan, lead and implement a service project that will benefit a non-profit organization, community or religious organization. It has been several years since Lovington has participated in an international project. Leaco offices will close at 12:00 PM on March 21st in observance of Good Friday.

Time flies when you’re having fun! The 2007-2008 Rotary year is already half over and we still have several months of service ahead to finish our year strong. We began this year setting three broad goals. The first goal was to fully engage the membership in the service of Rotary here in Lovington. I am very grateful to each of you who have stepped up this year and made a difference in the club and here in Lovington. Everybody has played a role in our success this year and participation at our Rotary sponsored events has been impressive. We can accomplish much more when we all do a little.

The third goal was to maximize grant matching opportunities through the District. I was recently informed that Lovington was a part of a successful effort along with other clubs to be funded by a matching grant for the Guatemala project. Kelly Cooper and I will be working the remainder of this year to seek matching grants for our Rotary Park project as well.

Again, I appreciate all you do for our club and community. Never underestimate the difference that one Rotarian can make in Lovington. ...David Shaw

Lovington Rotary Club’s Annual Head Start Christmas party was held on December 5, 2007 at the Lea County Electric Community Room. Forty-five head start students along with their younger siblings and parents enjoyed an afternoon of programs, a Santa Claus visit and cookies. In keeping with our education theme, Elf Steve O’Quinn and Elf Jennifer Jordan passed out Christmas books to each child as they sat on Santa’s lap for their photograph taken by our very own John Graham. As usual, these 3 and 4 year olds touched the lives of every Rotarian present. Join us again this year as we make special memories for Lovington’s Head Start children.

From our President...The second goal was to seek a presidential club citation through our District. I am pleased to inform you that not only have we qualified for that citation; but the District Governor informed us that our club was the first in District 5520 do so!
