Dear Loosaper Reader,

Over 500 copies of each issue of the St. Peter Armenian Church publication, Loosaper, are currently being distributed free of charge to its recipients. Donations to help defray the costs of publication and distribution are always welcome and appreciated.

Many of the recipients have told us that they look forward to reading each issue and use it to keep abreast of Diocesan and community news and announcements as well as acknowledgement of sacraments and donations. We hope that you too have found it informative and worthwhile.

The Loosaper also is a means of public relations regarding the happenings that go on at our church. We are an active community and provide educational, spiritual and social events for our parishioners and friends.

Staying connected is another plus to the Loosaper. People who have moved out of the area use it to continue to follow the activities of our church family.

If you have an e-mail address and would like to receive the Loosaper by e-mail, if you are not already doing so, please send a message to the church at [email protected] indicating that you wish to receive an electronic version of the Loosaper.

Lastly, we thank you for your continued support and ask that you be as generous as possible. Please use the form on the following page and submit it with your contribution toward Loosaper.

Please note a new donation category! A donation of $500 would dedicate an entire issue of the Loosaper in honor of someone, in memory of a loved one, or to commemorate a special event. Contact the church office for more information.

Another way to support the Loosaper is to place an ad in a single issue or for the entire year. Look for ad rates in the back of this issue.

With your support, we will be able to continue providing this informative and historical record of the St. Peter Armenian Church free of charge to all who wish to receive it.

Sincerely,

Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian and the Loosaper Editorial Staff

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock,

The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost,

To heal the broken, To feed the hungry,

To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations,

To bring peace among all, To make music in the heart.

ARMENIAN ANGELS

"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it." Hebrews 13:2

I recently traveled to Montreal to perform the funeral for Jack Hagop Bardakjian. May God enlighten his soul and grant comfort to his family.

Even in the midst of extreme sadness, there are always rays of God's hope and love that shine through the darkness, but only if we are open to receive it. I experienced a ray of God's light following the funeral as I was heading home to New York.

After Jack Bardakjian's memorial meal, I stopped at a local Armenian store to pick up some delicious goodies for the ride home and then tried to make my way to the highway. I do not speak or read French, so it was tough. After getting lost for about 30 minutes, I decided to stop at a gas station to ask for directions. I saw an SUV truck at a gas pump, so I decided to ask the couple in the truck. The young lady rolled down her window and then the young man got out of the truck and came toward me with a smiling face to give me directions to Highway 15 South. I immediately noticed that he had dark hair, dark eyes and olive skin. I thought to myself, "He looks Middle Eastern or even Armenian, I will ask him what nationality he is.” He finished talking to me and then I said, "What is your background?" He said, "Armenian." I then said, Hye es toon! which means in Armenian, "You are Armenian." This young man went crazy, jumping up and down, smiling, laughing and then, with a huge happy grin, said to his wife in the truck, "He is Armenian!" He then said to me, "You must come to our home, rest before your trip and we will drink Armenian coffee." I hesitated and said nervously, "I have a long trip." However, this smiling young man was persistent with his welcoming offer. I was a bit nervous, for I did not know these people at all, but then a sense of peace came over me, as if God was saying, "Go and visit them." I then said, "Sure, I'd love to have Armenian coffee with you both."

I followed them back to their apartment and they welcomed me into their home. This beautiful young couple made me Armenian coffee, served me delicious food, and even prepared an incredible goodie bag to take with me on the trip home. We laughed, shared stories, and felt like we had known each other for a lifetime. Halfway through my visit, we talked about William Saroyan from Fresno and the husband mentioned Sarayan's poem about when two Armenians come together -- 'See if they do not create a New Armenia." I told him, "That is exactly what we are doing right now." He then realized that and we all laughed and felt the new Armenian creation we had formed. The young couple were beautiful newlyweds. I prayed for them and especially that God grant them children just as beautiful as they are. I felt very comfortable in their presence and in their home, as if it were my own family. They were truly angelic to me. I realized that I was in the midst of Armenian Angels.

This experience reminded me of my summer in Armenia in 1990, where many families would invite me off the street and feed me dinner or lunch and show such beautiful hospitality.

God bless Dikran and Marianne and may the good Lord bless them with children. I do hope that I can meet up again one day with these Armenian Angels. I was truly entertained and blessed by Angels unaware!

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” -- William Saroyan

Parish Council Message

It’s been a busy fall at St. Peter Armenian Church and there is much to look forward to on the horizon.

On the heels of another successful fundraising effort, we recently repainted the sanctuary and vestibule areas, replaced the existing lights with energy-efficient bulbs, recaulked the stained glass windows, and applied a finish to the ceiling to help preserve the wood. This work, which was completed in October, has dramatically improved the appearance of the Church.

Before the paint was dry on the renovation project (literally!), we celebrated the 114th Anniversary of St. Peter Armenian Church with a dinner held in the Gdanian Auditorium. More than 100 parishioners and friends turned out for a wonderful evening in which we celebrated the memory and spirit of our beloved Der Garen. A special mortgage-burning ceremony was also held at the dinner to mark the closing of the campaign for the building expansion project.

And now, as hard as it is to believe, Thanksgiving is almost here. The holiday will be followed quickly by the annual Holiday Bazaar hosted by the Women’s Guild which takes place December 7-8. As with the Annual Church Festival in June, volunteers are critical to hosting a successful event. So if you can spare a couple of hours on December 7 or 8, please contact Holly Dadekian to see how you can help. If you can’t volunteer, please try to stop by for lunch or dinner and stock up on some delicious baked goods for the holidays.

Lastly, on Sunday, December 15 we will be hosting a Special Parish Assembly to discuss Der Stepanos' housing situation. Unlike a general assembly, this topic will be the only item on the agenda, so it will be a very focused discussion. Lunch will also be provided.

All dues-paying members of the parish are encouraged to attend. Look for additional information about the assembly in the mail.

Have a wonderful holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you in Church in the coming weeks.

As you read this article, preparations for the 2013 Women’s Guild Holiday Bazaar will be in full swing. The Bazaar Coordinators, Yn. Paulette Doudoukjian and Holly Dadekian, are looking forward to a successful and fun time for everyone involved. I’m hoping you’ll get the best present this holiday season by being present and volunteering your time and talent on December 7 & 8!! Refer to the flyer in this issue for more information on the Holiday Bazaar.

On Sunday, November 10, the Women’s Guild held their annual General Membership Meeting. A special thank you to Gil Chorbajian and the Parish Council for preparing a delicious luncheon for us. We all enjoyed watching the men at work in the kitchen - maybe a little too much!! After an opening prayer by Der Stepanos, we began the meeting by thanking outgoing Executive Committee members Holly Dadekian, Nectar Derian, Yn. Paulette Doudoukjian, Helena Ekmalian, Nelli Sargsyan-Pittman and Adrina Tutunjian for all their tireless efforts on behalf of the Executive Committee and the Guild as a whole. We then accepted nominations for the 2014 slate for election to fill those vacancies to complete the standing Executive Committee. The full Executive Body for 2014 is as follows: Alice Chorbajian, Holly Dadekian, Valerie Demarest, Yn. Paulette Doudoukjian, Sharon Foley, Alice McMullan, Sonya Moroukian, Mary Panjarjian and Carol Tutunjian. We also had a brief discussion regarding the 2014 Women’s Guild Assembly which will be held in New York City in May. After polling the membership in attendance, Valerie Demarest and Mary Panjarjian expressed an interest in representing St. Peter Church. The Executive Committee elected Sharon Foley and Mary Panjarjian as the 2014 WG delegates.

Please mark your calendar and “save the date” for the Women’s Guild Christmas Party to be held on Sunday, January 12, 2014. More information will follow, so check your weekly bulletin.

POPULAR RECIPES SHARED IN NEWLY-PUBLISHED ARMENIAN COOKBOOK

Women’s Guild of St. Peter Armenian Church in Upstate, NY, produces beautiful cookbook of Armenian favorites

WATERVLIET, NY – The women of the St. Peter Armenian Church in Watervliet are known throughout the Diocese for their outstanding and flavorful cooking. With that in mind, the Women’s Guild Executive Committee of the church commissioned a cookbook with tried-and-true, popular Armenian recipes.

More than 200 collected recipes comprise the beautifully designed, hardcover, spiral-bound book. Women from the parish submitted their family favorites, from breads and breakfast to desserts and all in-between. In addition, there is also a section of Women’s Guild specialties in bulk quantities such as cheoreg (rolls), rice pilaf, bulgur dolma (stuffed peppers), kadayif (cream-filled shredded phyllo), and tahin hatz (Lenten bread).

Eight tabbed sections make up the book. Each tab divider is uniquely designed with the Armenian tricolor and lettering describing the section. The artwork for the entire book – including the attractive, full-color cover that highlights both the foods and parish – was created by graphic artist and Women’s Guild member, Sonya Moroukian.

The six-member cookbook committee -- consisting of Valerie Demarest, Sharon Foley, Lucy Morton, Nellie Sargasyan-Pittman, Charlotte Sevazlian, and Dolly Shamlian -- worked nearly a year on this publication and is proud to have it released in time for the gift-giving season.

The book also contains a dedication to all those women, both living and deceased, who gave of their time, energy and talents for the benefit of St. Peter Armenian Church; a brief history of the St. Peter Women’s Guild; a poem written by Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian; and Armenian culinary terms. Towards the back of the book, there are also helpful kitchen and cooking tips.

“I believe that this well-thought-out and beautifully-designed cookbook will be a favorite for generations to come,” shared Women’s Guild Chairwoman, Sharon Foley. “It will make the perfect gift for the holidays and other special occasions.”

These newly-published cookbooks are available for $20 each plus $5 shipping and handling. Mail your check, payable to the St. Peter Women’s Guild, to P.O. Box 196, Watervliet, NY 12189. Cookbooks will also be available for sale on December 7 & 8 at the annual Holiday Bazaar sponsored by the Women’s Guild. For more information, e-mail [email protected] or call the church office at 518-274-3673.

In 1997, the St. Peter Women’s Guild also published a cookbook, “Flavors from Our House on the Hill,” that included both Armenian and non-Armenian recipes. This new cookbook is the 100th anniversary edition to commemorate the Women’s Guild 1914 establishment in this parish community.

Adult FellowshipAdult FellowshipAdult FellowshipAdult Fellowship Our Executives have settled into our year-end winding down mode. The club does not meet during the months of January and February due to probable inclement weather conditions. It is difficult to cancel and reschedule plans, meals, etc.

Again this year, our monthly luncheon in October featured Der Stepanos and his professional culinary staff (aka Lori Payette) to provide his artistic talents in spinning and preparing Pizza Pies ala “Gregory.” Beatrice Arzoumanian, our foremost Armenianophile, provided a DVD which recorded the activities of a group of Armenians celebrating “ARMENIAN CULTURE” aboard a Caribbean Cruise Oh. to be young again, dancing and frolicking to Near Eastern jazz!

Our November luncheon was our traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey and all the trimmings prepared by our “Varbed” chef Ed Belemjian, aided and abetted by Sandy and Russ Kilidjian and Lucy Morton. Our decorating committee, Grace Koshgarian and Carol Mattozza, provided the appropriate décor and table settings for the occasion. The group also enjoyed watching and discussing a video on Colonial Williamsburg depicting the Colonial life in Virginia during the 1700’s and the efforts to become independent from British rule.

We will celebrate the Christmas season with a luncheon at the Desmond on Wednesday, December 4. This has become a tradition for our club, enjoying a bountiful and delicious buffet, with seasonal musical selections provided by Ed Kebabjian.

Sunday SchoolSunday SchoolSunday SchoolSunday School On Sunday, November 17, following services, the St. Peter Sunday School staff and students hosted a very successful Spaghetti Dinner for the parish community. The students learned how, by serving others such as providing the community with this luncheon, is indeed ‘Serving the Lord with Gladness’ (Psalm 100:2).

Adult Bible StudyAdult Bible StudyAdult Bible StudyAdult Bible Study I have been thinking about various people in Scripture who brought God pleasure because of who they were and how they lived. Today, Noah came to mind so I thought I would say a little about him.

When you mention the name Noah, most people identify him with building an ark. I would like to share a little about Noah's character. Genesis 6:9 says, "Noah was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God." From this verse we can see the contrast between Noah and his generation. He lived in a time when people were out of touch with God and their behavior is described as wicked.

What does walking with God look like in a person’s life? When you look at the world around you, does it appear to you that most people are walking with God?

People who daily choose to walk with God stand out. They don't follow the crowd; they follow the leading of the Holy Spirit; they spend time with God daily in prayer and reading scripture; they go to church whenever possible; they are quick to forgive when they are wronged; they use their God given talents to serve others; and they obey the command that Jesus gave to love one another. This is what an authentic walk with God could look like in a person’s life.

It comforts my heart to know that God did not create us to be independent of Him, but rather dependent upon Him. He created us to need Him, to fellowship with Him, and to enjoy Him forever.

I hope Noah's example will inspire all of us to make a daily decision to walk with God. Oh, how much we need Him!

The Adult Bible Study class meets every other Friday morning at 10:15 a.m. in the Gdanian Auditorium. The class meetings in December are scheduled be held on December 6 & 20. Coffee and refreshments are provided along with a warm welcome.

God bless you all,

Elsie Vozzy
