supply of superior quality low maintenance building products.

Founded in 1976, the Epwin Group has grown and
developed both organically and by acquisition over the
last 38 years. It now employs over 2000 people with
approximately 1.2 sq.ft of production and warehousing space
and has an annual turnover of £265m.
In July 2014 the Epwin Group was listed on the London Stock
Exchange AIM market starting a new era in its history.
From its origins as one of the first PVC-U window fabrication
businesses in the UK, the Epwin Group has changed
significantly to become a stable and substantial player, selling
a much broader range of low maintenance building products.
The Group operates from four extrusion and moulding
facilities manufacturing both PVC-U window profile
extrusions and PVC-UE cellular roofline, cladding and
window trim extrusions. In addition, the business produces
glass sealed units from two plants, as well as operating a
number of fabrication facilities manufacturing PVC windows
and doors along with GRP and thermoplastic door sets.
Epwin Group businesses can supply virtually any external
plastic building product from our range of roofline, cladding,
windows, doors, conservatory roofs, guttering,
underground and soil systems, cavity closers
and curtain walling.
Epwin Group todayEpwin is a vertically integrated manufacturer of
extrusions, mouldings and fabricated low maintenance
building products, operating in the RMI, new build
property and social housing sectors.

and the simple single window
installation. Epwin works with
supply and fit contracts in social
and new build housing as well as
supplying trade windows and doors
throughout the UK. The Groups’
products can be found in most
towns and cities, in your local double
glazing firms and large DIY stores.

Case studiesClient: McCarthy & Stone
Project: Wellington Court
Roofline products, cladding and
Tudor board from Swish Building
Products were used to complete
McCarthy & Stone Retirement
Living development, Wellington
Court. Located on Waterloo Road
in Epsom, the new build complex
comprises 32 one and two bedroom
apartments for the over 60’s.
Exceeding the demands of the
specification the products were
supplied through an approved,
local stockist. The 16mm square
fascias and soffits in black foil create
a strong, light-weight and low
maintenance roofline, while the
Tudor board, also in a black foiled
finish adds a point of interest to the
façade. The white PVC-U cladding
installed in the undercroft is an ideal
alternative to timber, requiring little
or no maintenance; it can also help
to significantly improve the thermal
properties of a building.
In-line with McCarthy & Stone
design criteria the front elevation
features PVC-U Tudor board on its
gables and dormers, combined with
red brick and cream coloured render.
The maintenance and life cycle of
a product forms a stringent part of
the specification and procurement
process for McCarthy & Stone. Julie
Ward, regional sales & marketing
director for McCarthy & Stone
commented: “Our homeowners
own their own properties and
have the freedom to maintain and
decorate them as they wish, but as a
provider of quality housing for those
in later life, it’s our responsibility to
ensure that each development is
maintained to a high standard.
That’s why it’s important we
specify products that are not only
high quality, but incredibly low
maintenance. This makes it more
effective for us and the residents.
“We have to ensure that we do
the best for our residents, and that
means appropriate and best value
specification,” continues Julie Ward,
regional sales & marketing director.

Case studiesClient: Kirklees Council & Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing
Project: Harold Wilson Court
Harold Wilson Court in Huddersfield
is an 11 storey building comprising 43
one-bedroom flats. Kirklees Council
and its ALMO Kirklees Neighbourhood
Housing (KNH) completed the
refurbishment in line with the principles
of the Passivhaus standard.
Under Passivhaus the windows had to
achieve a reading of 0.8 W/m2k. Main
contractor Clugston Construction Ltd
was charged with procuring a product
which met the designated U-value while
also achieving a wind load capacity of
2000Pa; Profile 22 Approved Window
Contractor Polar Windows was the only
company to tender which said that this
was possible.
Rob Hawkins, commercial business
manager for Polar Windows explains
how the team reached a solution:
“Ordinarily, to gain a 0.8 U-value we
would remove the steel or aluminium
reinforcement in the frame but in this
instance, without the reinforcement
and with no additional support the
window wouldn’t be able to withstand
the wind load pressure experienced at
such a height.
“We developed a product that would
not only achieve a low U-value and
wind load capacity but one that
would also allow us to create quite
large windows. This meant that the
new windows would have a two-fold
benefit for the residents – they would
be draught-free and thermally efficient,
and they would also let more light into
the rooms; an important factor for
resident well-being.”
It was crucial during the technical
design of the window system that
Profile 22 and Polar Windows liaised
with the other sub-contractors and
suppliers to head-off any potential
issues. For example the EWI in some
areas of the building was up to 250mm
thick and this had to be factored in
to when designing the window and
planning the installation. The solution
was a triple-glazed casement window
reinforced using a bolster bar fitted to
the outside of the frame but inside of
the mullion.
In addition to the replacement windows
Profile 22 curtain walling and balcony
doors were also specified and installed.
Speaking about the transformation,
Dave Woodhead, KNH contracts
manager, said: “Harold Wilson Court is
a bespoke building and sets precedence
for other social housing providers and
landlords; this tower block is proof that
a truly thermally efficient refurbishment
is possible.”
