ABOUT L IGHT OPER A WORKS

LIGHT OPERA WORKS is a resident professional not-for-profit music theater in Evanston, founded in 1980. The company’s mission is to produce and present musical theater from a variety of world traditions. Such works include American, British, Viennese and French operetta, classic American musical theater, as well as contemporary fare. Since its inaugural season in 1981, LIGHT OPERA WORKS continues to be a leader in the United States for the presentation of these histori-cally important and theatrically delightful works of art in productions similar in size and scope to their originals, in modern productions with professional artists and full orchestra. LIGHT OPERA WORKS is a member of the Illinois Arts Alliance, League of Chicago Theatres, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Evanston and Wilmette Chambers of Commerce, Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau, and is a participant in ChicagoClassicalMusic.com. For a listing of LIGHT OPERA WORKS’ repertoire, and information on past productions, visit our website at www.LightOperaWorks.com.

Campagnola, Lulu’s dim sum & then sum, Oceanique, Prairie Moon and Trattoria Demi are the preferred restaurants of Light Opera Works. Special thanks to Prairie Moon for sponsorship of RODGERS & HART opening night reception.

We’ve moved! The Light Opera Works Box Office and Administrative Office are now located at 516 4th Street in Wilmette. The new Box Office phone number is (847) 920-5360 and the Box Office fax line is (847) 920-5358.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart wrote together from 1919 to 1943; theirs was a fascinating, prolific and colorful collaboration, producing literally hundreds of songs, many now regarded as classics. While our revue certainly focuses on their remarkable songbook, we will also give you a little insight into their fascinating personal lives. If you’re like me, you’ll want to head straight to the library and check out their biographies; it’s well worth the trip!

Even though they wrote mainly for the Broadway stage and Hollywood movies, we are not attempting to present these songs in anything like their original contexts. The songs of Rodgers and Hart have a rare ability to stand on their own; even removed from their original settings, these gems still shine as brightly as ever. And that’s the sign of a really great song, don’t you think? I hope you enjoy their enduring words and music. Ladies and gentlemen, Rodgers and Hart.
