A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR
Based on the beloved 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the 1991 Tony award-winning Broadway musical THE SECRET GARDEN has gone on to become beloved in its own right, and is surely one of the most beautiful and uplifting musicals of recent years. And I think there’s no one who loves this musical more than the director and choreographer of this production, Stacey Flaster, whom I’m proud and happy to bring back to Light Opera Works after her spectacular work on last season’s
CAROUSEL. Stacey’s enthusiasm for the show has been an inspiration, as has all the love and devotion that our wonderful team of designers and actors has brought to this project.
Speaking of actors, one of the big challenges of this show is casting the demanding roles of Mary and Colin. Stacey and I spent a long time searching for these two young actors, and I couldn’t be happier or more excited with the work Sophie Thatcher and Matthew Schroeder are doing.
The secret garden of Misselthwaite manor may seem a fragile thing, but it is full of life and healing power. You could say the same thing about families; in these difficult times, our family gatherings this holiday season help to revive us and face the future with hope. I hope THE SECRET GARDEN reminds us all of the importance of family, and inspires us to cherish this planet we call home. Happy Holidays!

I grew up in Kansas. My parents were well-educated and very active in the community. As the head of the Department of Family Economics at Kansas State University, my father served in President Kennedy’s Consumer Advisory Council. Mom held a master’s degree and was a county elected official. When they retired they traveled to Australia, Turkey, Russia and China. Rocking chair retirement was not for them.
But then tragedy struck. My mother had a massive stroke and Dad was diagnosed with cancer. I needed to find a retirement community in Kansas. The place we agreed on was undergoing a culture change. Gone was any semblance of “nursing home.” What remained looked like a household — and it reminded me of Mom and Dad’s home. A living room area was next to the kitchen where the coffee pot brewed and the staff chatted with people as they prepared breakfast. My mom set her own care schedule with the staff. She felt respected. She felt at home.
When Three Crowns Park decided to renovate and add buildings, I wanted to implement this same household concept. We traveled to Kansas and we trained extensively in person-centered care. Three Crowns Park opened three households – McDaniel, Colfax and Hartrey. I invite you to visit and experience how we make our house your home.

THE STORY OF THE SECRET GARDEN
After Mary Lennox’s parents die of cholera in British-ruled India, she is sent to live at the Yorkshire manor of her hunch-backed uncle, Archibald Craven, whose wife Lily died in childbirth. Overcome with grief, Archibald left the home in the care of his brother, Dr. Neville Craven. In this musical adaptation, spirits of the dead from Mary’s old life in India, the “Dreamers,” haunt Mary’s new home, and also narrate the action.
Mary befriends chambermaid Martha and Martha’s brother Dickon, and discovers she has a cousin, Colin, who has been bedridden since birth. The children unlock the dormant garden Lily once tended, and nurture it back to life, bringing Colin to good health and Archibald out of his depression.
