A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

THE STUDENT PRINCE opened on Broadway in 1924 and was a huge success; it ran longer than SHOW BOAT. And nearly 90 years later it is still being performed. When we decided to put it on our season, our general manager Bridget McDonough told me how much she loved it and assured me it wasn’t a “silly operetta”, and that she knew I’d enjoy working on it. Of course I knew the title and had heard a song or two, but I’d never seen it on the stage. Well, once again I’ve been struck by the emotional

wallop of a script and score written many years ago, from a different time and sensibility. Try to imagine the audience’s reaction to the students singing “Drink, Drink, Drink,” with the United States in the midst of Prohibition. That must have been a fun time in the theater! I certainly have enjoyed working on this show, and with all the new faces in our cast, notably Bill Bennett as our Prince, Bill Stone as Engel and Danielle Knox as Kathy. Bridget was right, it’s a story filled with real situations and real dilemmas, plus some real comedy too, mostly provided by a dear friend, Mr. Dale Benson, making his Light Opera Works debut as Lutz. Welcome to Heidelberg!

THE STORY

As Act One begins, Count von Mark, Prime Minister of Karlsberg, is busy arranging affairs of state, which mainly involve the future of the young heir apparent, Prince Karl Franz, who is about to go off to the University of Heidelberg. Von Mark enlists the aid of Lutz, the Prince’s valet, and Dr. Engel, the Prince’s tutor, to keep an eye on Karl Franz, as the Prince’s betrothal to Prin-cess Margaret of Saxony is necessary to the stability of the region.

In Heidelberg, preparations are under-way for the arrival of the Prince at the Inn of the Three Golden Apples, where Engel has arranged lodging. Lutz arrives first and inspects the accom-modations. A group of students stops at the inn for a round of beer, calling for their favorite waitress, the innkeeper’s niece Kathie. The Prince and Engel appear, and the young man is immedi-ately charmed by Kathie. The students welcome Karl Franz, and induct him into the Saxon Corps. Lutz is discov-ered spying, and the students carry him off to the river, leaving the Prince and Kathie alone together as the act ends.

As Act Two begins, Lutz is recovering from the latest dunking he has received at the hands of the students. The Prince and his friends arrive, having spent the night carousing. The Prince is utterly enamoured of his new life, and espe-cially with Kathie. Princess Margaret arrives, accompanied by her mother, the Duchess of Saxony, and their escort, Captain Tarnitz. The Prince greets them warmly, but resents the reminder of his royal duties, and decides to run off with Kathie to Paris. She is overjoyed

at this plan, and runs off to pack. All of this is interrupted by the arrival of Von Mark and Engel. The King is gravely ill, and the Prince must return to Karls-berg. Kathie is heartbroken by this turn of events, but the Prince promises to return to her soon.

In Act Three the action moves to the court of Karlsberg, some months later. The old King has died, and Karl Franz now sits on the throne. Unable to return to Heidelberg, he has grown moody and sad. A ball is underway. Princess Margaret and Tarnitz escape the gossip of the party—it seems the new King has been avoiding his betrothed. Tarnitz is in love with the Princess and attempts to console her. She is appreciative of his efforts, but is still in love with Karl Franz. Tarnitz tells her of Karl Franz’s affair with Ka-thie; when Karl Franz arrives, Margaret leaves the scene in distress. Von Mark, seeking to avoid scandal, informs Karl Franz that the royal wedding must take place immediately. Toni, the waiter from the inn, is brought to Karl Franz, who is delighted to greet a friend from his Heidelberg days. As memories of that happy time flood his thoughts, he resolves to follow his heart and return to Heidelberg.

In the final scene, Princess Margaret visits Kathie in Heidelberg. She tells her that Karl Franz is on his way, and urges her to renounce him. Kathie sees that the Princess truly loves Karl Franz, and agrees. Karl Franz arrives, and he and Kathie meet for one last time. As they bid farewell, the curtain falls.

THE STUDENT PRINCE premiered at Jolson’s 59th Street Theatre in New York City on December 4, 1924. This is its fourth Light Opera Works production. The first, directed by Philip A. Kraus and conducted by Albert W. Potts III, opened on December 27, 1985. The second, directed by Marc Verzatt and conducted by Peter Lipari, opened on August 24, 1994. L. Walter Stearns directed and Roger L. Bingaman conducted the most recent production, which opened December 22, 2001.
