UTS VSL-400Nabuurs, a medium-sized haulage company based in Haps, TheNetherlands, operates some 300 motor vehicles and some 350trailers/semi-trailers, about 90 of which are used fortemperature-controlled transport. Nabuurs recently evaluatedThermo King's new SL-400, with very pleasing results.

In temperature controlled transport the engine of the motorvehicle is not the only user of fuel, the reefer also adds to thefuel consumption. Therefore, a careful choice of the reefer canmean a reduction in fuel consumption - an important aspectconsidering the current high fuel prices.

Nabuurs compared the new SL-400 reefer from Thermo Kingwith its predecessor, the SMX-II. The new SL-400 replaced theSMX-II in an existing refrigerated semi-trailer, which Nabuursthen continued to use in their usual service.

According to Robert Hilton, responsible for the reefer units atNabuurs, this creates a realistic comparison, in which theSL-400 showed an excellent result with regard to fuelconsumption. When continuously working, the SL-400 neededapproximately 18 percent less fuel than its predecessor. And,because the SL-400 pulls down quicker to O degrees - up to a40 minute time-saving, and has much more efficienttemperature recovery after opening the trailer doors, neverusing more power than actually needed, an additional 7 percentfuel saving was noted. Altogether the SL-400 needed 25 percentless fuel on the same job than its predecessor.

Additionally, with Smart Reefer controls as standard, the SL-400is very easy to operate.

José María Arnedo Medina, Director of Armesa Logistica, comments on Armesa’s choice of Thermo King.

“The performance of Thermo King is superior in themarketplace, the units are very reliable with very fewbreakdowns, and there is a very comprehensive back-up service.”

TThhee SSLL--440000“Our new unit, the SL-400, has increased capacity, withfaster pulldown and greater airflow. Temperature isdistributed more evenly, so eliminating the risk of loaddeterioration due to top freezing - especially important forthe fresh produce we carry. This improvement inperformance comes with no increase in noise level, whichmeans more comfort for the driver, and no increase in fuelconsumption. On the whole, the Thermo King equipmentand especially the SL-400 model offers an unbeatablecombination of quality, price and performance.”

PPeerrffoorrmmaannccee aanndd SSeerrvviiccee“Our main business is to Germany but we also haveroutes to Great Britain, Holland and Austria. Clearly themost important thing is not to have any breakdowns, butif they do occur, it is vital to have immediate service onhand. Given that we are transporting perishable anddelicate goods, we cannot afford any delays in repairwork. So, the large number of fixed and mobile assistanceunits that Thermo King offers within Europe ensures anydowntime is minimised.”

Flower Express of San Remo relies on Thermo King UTS refrigerationunits to ensure that flowers from the Riviera travel to Northern Europefrom Italy at a constant temperature and arrive in perfect condition.

The new UTS system uses cutting edge scroll compressor technology, the way forward for truck temperature control systems because itenables greater cooling capacity and ensures more rapid pulldown. The benefits are not only in terms of efficiency, but also fuelconsumption, reliability and durability. Plus, it is quiet and requiresfewer repairs - and thus less downtime - thanks to the system’sinnovative design, which has reduced moving parts by 83%.

According to Giulio Ghersi, owner of Flower Express, “The new UTSunit has resulted in diesel savings, as it is equipped with a CycleSentry start/stop control system. In addition, the new generation ofundermount refrigeration units provides greater reliability. As theroutes we use are particularly demanding during the winter, it is vitalthat the vehicle and all the various accessories should be reliable.”

“A further fundamental factor protecting the load on long journeys isThermo King’s Smart Reefer micro-processor monitoring system, whichenables the driver to check on the in-cab display that the boxtemperature stays the same throughout the trip – letting him take theright action at exactly the right time to prevent any deterioration inthe flowers”, adds Giulio.

These statements, drawn from experience, are proof that users doappreciate the return they get on their investment after choosing aleading edge system like Thermo King UTS refrigeration units. Fuelsavings, lower maintenance costs and greater resale value of theproduct mean that the total cost over the product’s life cycle isactually lower than the competition.

Thermo King has extended and developed its range ofdirect-drive multi-temperature small truck and van refrigerationunits to meet continuing growth in Internet-drivenhome delivery grocery business. Direct-drive units are becoming the choicefor urban deliveries whetherbetween the food stores andthe home or into shops.Compared with self-powered units they offerenvironmental benefitssuch as lower noise, reduced fuelconsumption, and lesspollution. Whole-life costsare lower and technologicaladvances by Thermo King meanthere is no longer any compromiseon performance.

HHiigghheesstt CCaappaacciittyy VVeehhiiccllee PPoowweerreedd uunniittssoonn tthhee mmaarrkkeettThermo King has further extended its vehicle powered truck range to offer the highest capacity and airflow from a vehicledriven unit available on the market. The new units aredesigned for large trucks up to 7.5 metres in length, withcapacities comparable to diesel units up to 6400 Watts at0°C and 4000 Watts at –20°C. The low noise units will offersubstantial fuel savings over self-powered refrigeration, combined with lower maintenance costs. Reliability is assuredthrough the use of Thermo King exclusive reciprocatingcompressors as standard.

NNeeww mmoodduulleess ffoorr mmoorree fflleexxiibbiilliittyyThermo King’s vehicle powered range for small trucks andvans is moving towards a modular design, giving thesimplicity of fewer condenser platforms, whilst allowing theflexibility to match the required modules to suit theoperator’s needs. So operators have a greater choice and canchoose units tailored precisely to their requirements.

Thermo King has recently upgraded its range of modules tooffer operators even greater flexibility. New modules includethe MTCH which combines bi-temperature capability with aheat facility. The MH heat module, MTC bi-temp and MTCImulti-temp modules have been upgraded. MAC134 andMAC404 cabin air conditioning modules will be available laterthis year.

The new modules will apply to the V-200 range for smallvans and trucks, and to the soon to be launched V-300. TheV-300 range will use the same platform as the V-200 range, and will have 12 models, all with the same ultra-slim andmodern appearance as the V-200. A choice of evaporatorswill be available for the bi-temp and multi-temp units.

The Christian Salvesen Group has recently acquired seventy-sixnew Thermo King cooling units, as part of a plan to replace itsentire French fleet.

Christian Salvesen looks after the logistics requirements of itscustomers throughout Europe in sectors as varied as theagrifoods, chemical, automotive, food and consumer goodsdistribution and catering industries.

On delivery of the new equipment, Gilles Ricordel, Salvesen’sFleet Director for France, took the opportunity to talk about hiscompany’s choice of Thermo King equipment.

“Salvesen first opted for Thermo King in the early 1960’s, andsince then a real partnership has developed between our twocompanies. Thermo King gives us the products that meet ourneeds, and we are very happy with the service we receive fromour dealer.”

“As a large proportion of our transport activities here in Franceinvolves local distribution, we mostly use straight trucksequipped with RD-TLE and TS-600 units, and we are delightedwith the units and their new evaporators. For long-distanceruns, however, we opted for the SL-300 single temp and theSL TCI multi-temp units for our semi-trailer combinations.”

“Of course, all of our vehicles are fitted with DAS or Accutracdataloggers, which means we can track box temperature fromthe driver’s cab at all times. We view this as an essentialsafety feature and security guarantee, both for the shipper andfor the client.”

With five loading depots in France, the Salvesen Group makesdaily deliveries to the country’s supermarkets. The Group’sFrench activities have been centred around its facilities in Lille,Lyon, Strasbourg, Bordeaux and Salon de Provence for almosttwenty years.

Tesco Store’s rapidly expanding UK home delivery fleethas been joined by another batch of 280 MercedesSprinter 3.5 tonne vans, all equipped with ThermoKing’s ubiquitous V-200 refrigeration system suppliedby Marshall Thermo King. The latest additions bring thenumber of insulated vans used on its local homedelivery service to close to 600.

These latest fleet arrivals are all supplied on leaseagreements courtesy of CW Leasing, with full repair andmaintenance contracts. All 280’s have JC Payne dual-compartment refrigerated bodywork and are cooled byThermo King’s extremely popular vehicle engine-drivenV-200 refrigeration units.

Thermo King’s V-200 can also be specified in a multi-temperature version, and is ideal for vehicles in the10m3 to 20m3 body capacity range, drawing up to2,650 Watts at 0°C chilled and up to 1480 Watts on–20°C frozen applications. The refrigerants used are theozone-friendly HFC R-134a or R-404A.

The multi-temperature V-200 MAX TCI model comeswith a twin evaporator system that can be set tomaintain frozen or chilled temperatures. Other versionsof the V-200 series have hot gas heating operationwhich is useful for winter conditions or for special workinvolving the transport of goods where interiortemperatures above ambient must be maintained. Whenengine-driven, it has a heating rating of 750 Watts or650 Watts on electric standby.

Hindelang Kühlspedition boasts a fleet of over 500 temperature-controlled vehicles, in operation Europe-wide and directed fromcompany headquarters in Woernitz, around 80 kilometres west ofNuremberg. Satellite communication technology enables vehicles to beprecisely located at any given moment, while cargo hold temperatureis tracked at all times, as required by law. However, instead of readingand printing this data via a conventional PC or printer interface, thecompany has recently begun to transmit its information wirelessly, using Thermo King’s R:COM system.

R:COM essentially comprises two elements: a wall-mounted receiver atcompany headquarters, connected by cable to a PC, and R:COMmobile transmitters mounted onto individual vehicles. Apart from themain receiver on the roof of the company’s administration building,Hindelang has had two additional relay stations mounted on thenearby company workshop to cover the entire company premises, with additional transmitters soon to be fitted to the Hindelangrefrigerated warehouse.

“The system brings us both cost and quality benefits”, reportsManaging Director Manfred Hindelang. “The relevant data is alwaysavailable on-site and we know immediately which vehicles aredeparting and which are arriving and will therefore be available.”

As soon as a vehicle approaches a receiver, the mobile transmitterautomatically sends a vehicle identification signal (vehicle type andregistration) to the base station, together with all the informationstored in the vehicle’s data logger. Temperature and other operationaldata are therefore immediately available at headquarters. Any alarmconditions are identified at once and, depending on the gravity of thesituation, forwarded by email or SMS to the appropriate party.

As long as a vehicle is located within the receiver’s range, the systemwill not only relay data but also function as a traffic managementsystem for vehicles on site. R:COM can only communicate withThermo King data loggers and recorders. However, by installing aThermo King data logger, the system can be fitted to any trailer withother manufacturers’ reefers. Hindelang regards R:COM as simply thebest solution on the market.

In line with its commitment to providing the most efficientand reliable refrigeration units on the market, Thermo Kinghas developed and expanded its range of temperaturecontrol units for small to medium-size trucks. The CD-II MAXfeatures a new reciprocating compressor, exclusive to ThermoKing, which has been designed specifically to enhanceperformance with environmentally friendly R-404A refrigerant.

The new TK-208R reciprocating compressor replaces theTK10.5 swash-plate style compressor. It is designed forgreater efficiency and reliability and features an in-line two-cylinder crankshaft-driven compressor, electric clutch and JetLube oil separation system. The compressor has beenextensively tested for endurance and has been used inrefrigerated truck applications for many years in Japan.

The CD-II MAX also features a space saving condenser whichprovides maximum cab clearance and reduced truck bodyheight on conventional chassis. The evaporator optimisesspace below the evaporator for all types of cargo, maximisingcubic capacity. A lightweight aluminium frame increasespayload potential while the built-in microprocessor controllersimplifies system monitoring and troubleshooting.

The CD-II MAX uses two high capacity, long-life 12-volt DCevaporator fan motors that deliver an air flow volume of1,800 m3/hour with a discharge velocity of 4.9 metres/second.

The new model incorporates all the features of the CD-MAXrange including: a standard low decibel sound kit, in-cabcontrols, a TK2.49 two-cylinder diesel engine, a large electricmotor and a light-weight corrosion-resistant aluminium frame.
