Youth Leadership20 IDEC 2012 has been designed so that youth are
ully integrated into the conerence through theYouth Forum. The youth rom dierent countries
will not only be providing support organizing and
moderating activities, they will propose and do! They
have undertaken the responsibility or opening the
plenary sessions, acilitating the workshops and the
IDEC Dialogues, and will actively participate by tak-
ing positions and generating proposals throughout
the conerence. I you have not yet joined this collec-
tive, you can still do so during the Conerence.
Its your Conerence!
LanguagesAt IDEC conerences, it is common or dierent
cultures and languages to live together, understandeach other, and create new riendships and col-
laborations. English is the language most commonly
spoken across countries attending IDEC. So, although
the IDEC 2012 is being held in Puerto Rico, a span-
ish speaking country, we have taken both languages
into consideration. Throughout the program there
are many alternatives in either language and all ple-
nary activities will have simultaneous tra
plenaries, IDEC Dialogues and Room 4 Yu

next and leave you eeling deeply engaged with that
theme. Alternatively, you could participate in ever y-
thing and take a broader view o the set o themes.
We also wanted to eature a ew presenters and to
oer you plenty o Open Spaces or presenting and
participating. Weve let rooms or spontaneous and
emerging conversations in every workshop block. Its
your Conerence!
202020 and 3030 PanelThis is a shorthand description or a new kind o
workshop structure in which 2 or 3 presenters share
quick, powerul presentations on convergent topics,
in 20 or 30 minute intervals (kind o TED Talk style).
This space will be acilitated by 20 IDEC 2012 vol-
unteers. Ater all three have presented, then a ully
open dialogue is initiated with the audience about
what olks are learning, unlearning and thinking. Its
your Conerence!
Open SpacesOpen Spaces were created so that every par ticipantwho wants to organize workshops, conerences and
dialogues can do so reely. This means that any per-
son can suggest an Open Space covering any topic;
they only need to propose i t. At 20 IDEC 2012, we will
set a table close to the registration area to sched-
ule the Open Spaces. In each concurrent workshop
session, we will have our or ve rooms reserved
or this ormat. This should, o course, not limit the
emergence o open spaces at other times and places
during the event. Its your Conerence!
Open Spaces unction on the basis o our principles:
1. Those who arrive are the right people.
2. Whatever happens is what had to happen.
3. They start when the time is right.
4. They end when they are do ne.
Boricua TimeSessions are planned to end 20 minutes beore the
next one is scheduled, unless it is otherwise speci-
ed in the schedule. For example, i workshops start
at 10:40 am, then the opening ceremony should end
at 10:20 am. Presenters will do their best to ensure
that the start and end o the sessions fow. These
ree spaces should leave enough time or you to
move rom one session to the other, hydrate, interact
socially and take care o any other matter you deem
necessary. A cultural note: In Puerto Rico, a fowing
sense o time is oten lovingly joked about as Bo-ricua Time.
We hope that you will ollow the Law o Two Feetin
knowing that you are always in the right place at the
right time, or i not, that you will correct that by mov-
ing to another place where you eel comortable. I
you join a session that has already started; thats ne.
Just remember that you came in late, join up at the
point the session is in without de laying the group.
Its your Conerence!
Visits to schoolsIn order to amiliarize yoursel with several edu-
cational models in the Puerto Rican context, you
will have the opportunity o visiting our dierentschools: Nuestra Escuela in Cagua s, Diego Vzquez
Elementary School in Caguas, the Sor Isolina Ferr
Center - Caimito in San Juan and Proyecto PECES in
Humacao. The spaces available or these visits are
limited, so make sure you register on time at the
tourism table. Further inormation can be ound in
the daily program details. Its your Conerence!
