Lucy Manley specializes in oils to capture the Ontario landscape in a loose painterly style, emphasizing colour and value. With other experienced painters, paint the emotion and mood of a landscape in an impressionist-realist style. Learn how to use the natural vibrancy and versatility of acrylic paints on black canvas to capture the effect of dramatic light and atmosphere. Belleville offers a variety of picturesque landscapes throughout the city, on its waterfront and in nearby Prince Edward County. Students will meet at the College on the first day of classes.

Working on black canvas with oils or acrylics, you will explore the alla prima method of painting. Alla prima refers to a wet-on-wet application of paint, a technique which ensures that paint remains pliable and workable. Using photographs as a reference, complete one or two paintings per day while learning how to control layers of thick paint on a toned canvas and focusing on values from light to dark. Demonstrations and daily critiques will add substance to your learning experience. This is a great class for experienced painters or for those just starting their painting journey. The subject matter will be pure landscapes as well as buildings in landscapes.

Fibreglass window screens coupled with traditional watercolour techniques can give paintings a new and exciting look. Learn to overlay screening onto watercolour paper, select appropriate brushes, apply washes, lines, accents and to adjust the water-to-pigment ratio to create unique textures. After the painting has dried and the screen is lifted, students will evaluate the results and continue to complete their paintings by adjusting shapes, values, lines and colours. This workshop is open to all artists, from beginners to very experienced painters.

Using only simple mosaic-like brushstrokes, explore how to create dynamic semi-abstract landscapes. This approach to painting has its roots in Pointillism and Divisionism and can add a fresh and lively look to paintings. Movement, depth of field, subtle colour shifts, textures, lost and found edges and other painting elements can all be created using the mosaic approach. Each student will paint a unique painting. Sample paintings and a partial demonstration will help students understand this interesting painting concept.

Playing with space using acrylic paint is one of the ultimate pleasures and methods for surprising yourself and the viewer. This course looks at different ways space has been created through the ages and how you can use these ideas in your own work. We look at the technical approaches employed to “fool the eye” – from the framed scenes of the Academy to the spacial tensions set up by abstraction and the fractured space of 20th century paintings. Students may choose to work abstractly or naturalistically, at their own level, and will receive individual feedback.

Discover the essential techniques you need to paint confidently with acrylics! Understand the technical properties of acrylic paints and mediums, fundamental design, colour and value, and how the right tools and tips all work together to help you achieve astonishing results. Through key techniques, we will explore traditional and experimental approaches to painting with this forgiving, versatile medium, giving you a new understanding of the myriad of ways you can use acrylics to create anything that catches your imagination. Benefit from demonstrations, advice and personal guidance to complete beautiful paintings that combine knowledge and skill with the joy of painting!

Since 1987, he has won numerous awards, including many best of shows in Canada and the U.S. In 2003, he placed second in World Decorative Miniature Wildfowl and Best in Masters Decorative Life-Size Wildfowl at the Ward World Championship. In April 2010, he won the John Scheeler Memorial Award, considered the highest award in wildfowl carving. He is a respected judge and teacher of bird carving and has worked in many collections in Canada and the U.S.

With the European robin as our subject, we will spend the first three days carving an alert pose in tupelo wood using power tools and will then bring the bird to life by painting its colours. Special attention will be paid to various aspects of the bird’s anatomy, so students will achieve an understanding of form. This class is recommended for intermediate and advanced wood carvers. A materials fee of $30, payable to the instructor, covers the tupelo wooden blank, patterns in black and white and colour, a set of eyes and feet, as well as sealer, gesso and the use of all necessary paints.
