One may come across legacies and monuments of thousands of years behind any door or around any corner in Istanbul. Whether you take a round tour in Istanbul or visit any of the 39 districts nearby, you will catch hold of various historical and natural wonders any minute.

Istanbul: A world center of great value in the past as well as in the present, Istanbul embraces Asia on the one hand and Europe on the other. Istanbul, with its historical peninsula, numerous scenic and historical beauties is a magnificently unique city that has been capital to many civilizations from past to present and still continues to be home to residents from all over the world. This rooted city, with a history dating back to 300 thousand years before, constitutes a mosaic of many civilizations and cultures combined.

Page 11: LPH Newsletter February 15

You may begin your Istanbul tour at the Grand Bazaar that will enchant you with its bright and pleasant environment while a sense of peace and security will wrap you tightly in Hagia Sophia. A tour of the pearl of the Bosporus, Ortaköy, Beşiktaş and Kabataş will let you enjoy the delightful views along the deep blue coast.

With the Black Sea in the north, the Marmara Sea in the south and the Istanbul Strait running in all its glory through the middle of the city, you will experience great moments in Istanbul and witness the unique combination of the Mediterranean and Black Sea climates. You may encounter a hot and humid weather in the summer and a cold and snowy weather in the winter. Watching the flying seagulls at Eminönü by the time the rising sun illuminates the city, you will notice the docked boats rocking gently as if to greet you. What’s more, you won’t be able to resist the fresh scent of the city when the first ray of lights illuminate the shimmering fishes swimming around the fishing twines. The setting sun illuminates the city like a painting every evening. The candle- like silhouettes of the mosques rise above the historical peninsula to greet the city while the sun and the moon salute each other as the day turns into night. Right at that moment you will feel like a sultan in the cradle of civilizations. Bridging two continents, this unique city, where one can encounter people from different countries and witness diverse cultures merging in harmony, will awaken completely different feelings in you.

Picture this: it is 11PM at work and the only thing standing between us and our best cover yet is Cyrine Abdel Nour’s approval so we can receive the high res images from the photographer. The atmosphere is electric as we are all convinced that we are on to our best photo shoot ever; fabulous location, amazing styling, and the gorgeous star herself. But, just like in any self-respecting thriller, things get a bit stressful around midnight as the entire magazine, except for the cover and cover story, has been uploaded to the printing press. When we finally receive the photos everyone is relieved. The next day the proofs looked perfect and everything was signed off. Phew!

Come Sunday I could barely wait to open the box to see the new issue. When I do--horror of horrors--I find out that the cover was burnt, completely drenched in orange. My heart sank, and then it sank a bit more. All our efforts seemed to be headed down the drain as there we were, on the day were all magazines were supposed to be delivered, facing a disaster.

As per Sheikha’s instructions, all magazines were recalled and we had to find a solution, and a quick one too! The magazines could not be re-printed entirely as that would take forever. I started cutting a cover from an old issue and pasting it to the new mag to see if we could replace the cover only without damaging the pages that are normally attached to it. Guess what? It worked! The next step was to go with the team to the printing press in the industrial area to manually match the correct colour of the cover. No less than 10 trials later, the mission was accomplished. The magazines were re-distributed two days later and the cover was a huge success.

Again, just like any thriller, the best part comes towards the end of course. So, after this saga everyone was understandably drained. Sitting in my office I saw our designer Souad turn to our accountant, Jackie, and ask her in a solemn voice “Jackie, are you related to Jackie Chan?”… Everyone laughed their hearts out as we remembered that no burden tackled as a team remains a burden…

Isn’t it amazing that we are all in in a warm, fuzzy melting pot. A melting pot of people, cultures, minds, experiences, stories, talents, generations. So how about we add a ladle into this melting pot and

pour ourselves a dose of this amazing stew we’re brewing called the Lulua Group.

This issue will debut the “Your Share” section of the newsletter. Each month we will bring to you 3 articles from 3 different

colleagues who will share an experience, a story or a poem or anything in 250 words or less.

Here’s the first edition, hope you enjoy what they have to say!

debating with the artist from where can we get the proper ones, Maryam one of Alnowair pirates suddenly says: “How about we cut those with a cutter and give them a proper shape?” “It will not work”, artist quickly replies, “..it will damage the marker’s fiber”. In that case Ahmed sets out for a chase, one stationery shop, another, none has the type, which we desire. As he is on the run I enter the office and what scene do I see? Maryam sitting at the table surrounded by cutters, markers and sheets of papers, meticulously and with many sound effects (you’ve got to hear her signature sounds one day) trying to cut the marker tip into the perfect shape. Her fingers and nails all covered with black indelible paint, around her, all over the place, papers for testing the outcome filled with millions of lines.. one more “yuggghhh…agrhhhh” and… “It worked!!!” she screams with deepest satisfaction holding a perfectly shaped marker and drawing beautiful calligraphy style lines.

Needless to say that mentioned marker was used during our show at The Avenues. You may ask how and why did it make my heart grow? Well, to me seeing one of my team members so passionately perusing their goal is something priceless. It is a live lesson, which proves that if you really want something, with the right attitude and persistence, sooner or later you will achieve it. Very small, yet such a big moment.

“It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.” –Mark Twain.

Thank you Maryam and thank you my amazing Team for those moments.

Let me tell you a story, which made my heart grow.

It is just one day to our 30 Yellow Benches campaign official launch at The Avenues, one hundred fifty three things to be confirmed, wrapped, zipped up, arranged and followed up on. 29 benches distributed across the entire Kuwait calmly waiting for the last, 30th one, to be placed in one of the most crowded mall in Kuwait and to announce the existence of her 29 daughters. Artist who will perform a live graffiti art show on the mother bench has the concept in his pocket and can’t wait for the spot light to hit his funky cap. Then in the middle of this positive madness - a hick up. We get to know that the special paint markers, which we got, all have round tips not suitable for his type of performance. They need to be straight with side angles. While sitting and

Small Big Stories Behind the Scene

There are almost no humans to be seen outdoors, just the blowing, drifting sheets of whiteness, punctuated by an occasional beeping yellow plow pushing its catch up against mounds already eight feet high, 10 feet high, even 15 feet high, further burying long-submerged cars that now seem lost forever in a frosty version of Pompeii."

Obviously, this is not something I wrote. It is an extract from the New York Times describing the last snow storm that hit Boston. I have always dreamt of being able to describe a scene/ experience- in English- from my travels with a similar fashion. So with this contribution to Lulua Newsletter for this month, I promise myself to exhort all my imagination, language skills and efforts to be able to write- in English- about my travel experiences with words as beautiful as the ones used in the above extract for my next contribution.

Your body language shapes who you are

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

Strange Laws Around The WorldWhether for vacation or business, traveling to foreign places means there’s going to be a change in culture, sometimes drastically. Hand signals can mean different things, clothing must be worn in certain ways, and sarcasm may be obsolete. Along with the change in culture comes a change in the actual laws of the foreign land.
