OverviewBeginning in late 2008, the Federal Reserve (Fed) launched its first round of quantitative easing, or QE, to stimulate the recession-plagued economy. A second round, QE2, followed in late 2010, with QE3 starting in the fall of 2012. In May 2013, former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke ignited “tapering” turmoil in the markets, although the reduction in QE bond buying didn’t actually begin until January 2014.
