Our Man in MozambiqueArnaldo Rossanhane, our seminarian,is a 3rd year pastoral and theology stu-dent at United Methodist CambineSeminary in Mozambique. We received a letter from Arnaldo,

printed in last monthsNews & Views, updating us on his progress, thankingus for our support and sending Godsblessings our way. Thanks to JanSchnepf, Mozambique Covenant Com-munications Volunteer, for sending thepicture. In her words we are blessedto be a blessing, nurturing the life of a

student 10,000 mile away! Yes, weare indeed blessed! Our newer members and friends wouldbe interested to know that as a churchfamily we are entering the sixth year of

our commitment to the MozambiqueInitiative. Arnaldo is the second semi-nary student that we have supportedwith our prayers and finances.More efforts for Mozambique - Our church council agreed at last monthsmeeting that our focus for the upcoming holidays would "be to raise money formosquito nets for the entire area of Catembe". (see Pastor Kathleen's letter inlast monthsNews & Views) Response to this ambitious goal has been enthusi-astic. Pastor Kathleen, leading by example, has just about worn out herkitchen baking pumpkin bread, pumpkin cake and pumpkin butter to be sold atthe "Patch" and at fellowships.A student donated her babysitting money. A family started a cuss jar and

donates their coins to the nets. A church member who was paid for their ser-

vices to the church returned the money for mosquito nets. A couple whomakes those incredibly delicious cheesecakes has pledged to donate the rest of

the years profits toward "Nets for Catembe"! These are just a couple of exam-

ples of the "Extravagant Generosity" that is so much a part of the Lafayette

    Park UMC family!

I dont know if you have noticed it yet, but it seems to me that we now have a new currency here at LafayettePark United Methodist Church, and that currency is nets! It has been just a few weeks since we began our chal-lenge to generate enough nets to cover the city of Catembe, Mozambique with bed nets also known as mosquitonets, and we have already made great strides towards that goal. It will take a total of 2000 nets to cover Catembeand at this point we have raised enough for 485, so we only have 1,515 to go.

However, the most exciting thing for me is not only hearing people talking about nets, but finding out what theyare doing to raise net money. We are receiving donations for nets for many different reasons. Here are a few;We cant buy thatit is half a net. Just because I can give. I am going to match my daughters donation.and From our cuss jar. People are baking and serving and giving the profits towards nets. One of our childrengave a net from his birthday money. We have received donations from the sales of Cheesecakes, pumpkin bread,

and pumpkin crochet hats. People have turned in money from substituting and babysitting. I held off shoppingfor souvenirs in Mexico. One of our children has their classroom that is taking this on as their project and awhole school that is going to collect money for nets during Lent. It is downright exciting!

Yet, the most exciting thing to me at this point, is to hear people talking. Here are some of the conversations that Ihave heard. This will sell at the Christmas Bazaar and it will be 1 net, and this will be one 10th of a net. It is likewe no longer have dollar bills but we have denominations of nets! I am also hearing people say, Lets not do adrive through, that would be a couple of nets. Lets just eat at home.

God is truly doing a great work within our lives and the life of our church. We are thinking about ways to livemore simply so that we can give the simple gift of a healthy life to our Sisters and Brothers in Catembe.I have no doubt that we will successfully meet our goal. Lafayette Park is a church that listens for Gods voice anddirection and then follows that voice. Please do include a note with your donations so we can all see what waysour goal is reached. These will be faith stories that will encourage and excite our congregation.

Thanks for all of your faithful support as we work together to change and save lives in Catembe!

Good Sense Financial CornerWhat do you do when faced with bad news? I'm sure each of us has had a time when we

were faced with something devastating, and perhaps like me, our first reaction wasn't

always to pray and trust God. There are many who now face financial bad news, so I

wanted to share a scripture that has really helped me over the past year of uncer-

tainty. An excerpt is below (NIV Psalm 112:4-9):

"Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.

Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. Surely he

will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. He will have no fear of bad news; his

heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. His heart is secure, he will

have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. He hasscattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures for-

ever; his horn will be lifted high in honor."

There has been many a morning that I have said the entire Psalm

112 out loud, replacing the pronouns with "I" (e.g., "I will never be

shaken"). This has helped shape my thoughts before leaving my

home in the morning, so that I am steadfast in trusting the

Lord. This in turn reduces the pressure on me to create a solution to

whatever bad news has come to light, and when the pressure is gone

I can hear more clearly whether I need to take any action.

Sometimes the action I hear is to repent for what I've done or myattitudes, and sometimes I hear that I need to be in faith that God

will reverse the situation, or in prayer/faith that God will use the

situation to bring blessing. While actions may vary, one thing I

know for certain is that God doesn't want us to be victims - we are to be steadfast in believing in God's

goodness and mercy. God will provide - jobs, healing, a place to live, food, the means to pay off debt,

wisdom, and whatever is needed in your situation.

    By Bethany Spaulding, C.P.A., C.M.A., C.C.S.A., C.R.P.

As you can see in Psalm 112, God

desires us to be steadfast in trust-

ing God so that we experience

blessing. When we walk in the

blessing of God, we will be able to

"scatter abroad gifts to the poor"

    and "lend generously." Spend

time in the Bible this month, and

let the Words of God bring you to

a place of being certain of your

    trust in the Lord.

Our 2010 Mission to Juarez . . .On Sunday, October 3rd, we (Lafayette Park UMC) commissioned and sent a team of five vol-unteers to Juarez, Mexico to build a house for Operacion HOGAR, a Volunteers In Mission out-

reach. The house was to be dedicated to honor the memory ofMolly McBride.

This was our sixth trip to the desert of Anapra, an impover-ished area along the Mexiacan boarder. Our task was tobuild a house for Elita, a woman living in a structure made ofwooden shipping pallets covered with cardboard and tarpa-per. The rain from the night before had entered through aleaking roof leaving astream of water run-ning across the dirtfloor of her shelter.

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by Elita, her family, neighbors and young children who eagerly joined us inthis project. The cinderblock building was constructed infour days, measuring approximately 13 x 23 feet. Wewere led by two maestro (foremen) who spoke very lit-tle English, yet were able to guide us through

this endeavor. Together, using our hands, we sifted rocksfrom the sand, mixed concrete and mortar, carried blocksand buckets of cement, sawed boards and tarred the

roof. In the midst of our hard work, we found en-joyment in playing games and coloring with thechildren who visited daily.

The new house had no electricity, running water, orplumbing. Water was accessed from an outdoorspigot and electricity was brought in by runningextension cords from an electric pole in thestreet to the house. We installed a door and twowindows with metal bars which provided secu-rity. A concrete floor was mixed and poured by

hand, without a cement mixer, providing a firmfoundation.

On our fourth and final day the roof was added to the house. As the maestro was pulling the

Mixing concrete for the floor. The roof

    was completed the next day.

bucket of tar up the wall, Esmirelda, a twelve year oldneighbor took my hand and asked me to come to herhouse. She had been working with us all week, shovelingsand and carrying rocks. I followed her to her home, atiny one-room structure. I observed two beds, side by sidewhich took up almost the entire space. In our Spanish/Signlanguage conversation she pointed to the hole in the roofwhich leaked water onto her mother's and baby brother'sbed as they slept. I was humbled by her concern for her

    family and her stark

    existence.

Elita, the recipientof the house pre-pared a fiesta for our team, the friends, neighbors andchildren who had come to help in the raising of her newhome. A poor woman with nothing to give found pleasurein feeding us and her neighbors. We noticed that shewaited until all had eaten before she took food for her-self.

    The rewardingexperience of

this mission wasthe development of relationships with our neighbors inMexico, the reality of building a house for a womanwho had none, and to give hope for a better life. Ourpurpose was to provide a gift of shelter to a needy per-son,but we returned home feeling that we were the truerecipients of many gifts which cannot be purchasedwith money. We learned that Esmirelda's roof can bereplaced for $300. A new roof would be life changingfor her and her family. If you are interested in helpingEsmirelda and her family to make her dream a reality, you can make a contribution to Lafayette Park UMCand note "Esmirelda's roof" in the memo.

Caring for the Earth is a fundamen-tal part of our Christian faith. Wehold a set of core values that speakto the heart of our religious moralsand ethics: spirituality, steward-ship, sustainability, and justice.Spirituality - Creation itself in-spires us and calls us to care. Fun for All Ages! The idea for a Pumpkin Patch Fund Raiser was introduced by Pastor Kathleen about 5 years ago as a fund raiserfor the church. Pastor Kathleen said she was told that this idea wouldnt work - theft and vandalism would be

rampant. Well, it just hasnt happened! While it fits the bill as a fund raiser it quickly became evident that itwas much more. The Pumpkin Patch has become a much antici-pated event in the community.

While the patch doesraise funds for the church,(this years profits will goto purchasing Mosquitonets for the people ofCatembe, Mozambique)

as a co-operative venture it also raises needed funds for a Native Ameri-can (Navaho) Tribe in New Mexico who raise the pumpkins and offer

them to us on a consignmentbasis.Additionally, the Patch is visited by neighborhood families andplays host to neighboring schools, whose field trip budget have beenslashed. They bring whole classrooms to experience the maze, enjoystories told and simple treats.

It is also an opportunity to tell our story to individuals and familieswho visit. In addition to the warm welcome of our working membersbrochures and News Letters are available and are offered to those in-terested.

While the Patch is indeed a lot of work it is well worth the effort. It issuccessful because of the dedicated support of so many in our church family and is a great example of what peopleof faith can accomplish ...a church without walls, a visible sign of Christs presence in our urban communityand beyond! From New Mexico to Mozambique!

. The first group will leave the church at approximately 10:15. Prior to The Walk, a continental breakfast will beserved. After The Walk, participants are invited to share their experience with others over a light lunch.
