    Output 2.2 Strengthened national capacity to undertake econ & fin analysis of opportunities for increased trade

    Tuvalu & Samoa has capacity to use production/innovation systemfor evaluation of Noni (ASTI);

    Methodology for commodity chain studies developed with FAO collaboration Kiribati breadfruit, Fiji vegetables, fruits and Vanuatu nangali nuts;

    Economic justifications for use of commodity pathway systems for biosecurity & trade facilitation established - Fiji est benefits FJD 300,000 NPV.

    Timber milling efficiency for PNG, Sol Is, Fiji expected to eventually improve with pre-project proposal for ITTO having been approved and full proposal submitted;

    Tonga timber utilization to improve equipment provision, CB on tree felling, log peeling, drying;

    PICTs able to use hot water quarantine treatment for taro - mites, wire worms, nematodes.

    Positioning PICTs to maximize benefits from the ITPGRFA and Global Crop Diversity Trust (GCDT)

    Diversity of PGRFA is crucial for food crop production;ITPGRFA conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA and

    equitable access and benefit sharing;ITPGRFA Governing Board approved to go into agreement with

    CePaCT to place PGRFA of Annex 1 crops in MLS;GCDT offer of funds for perpetuity for conservation of yams and

    food aroids;Establishment of seed bank & agreement with AVRDC for

    exchange of FGR and PGRFA respectively.

    agree to collaborate with LRD, with possible support by US;A R&D programme has been developed jointly with RMI, Kiribati

    & IFAD;IFAD supported activities start 2008 in Kiribati;GTZ Climate Change Adaptation & Mitigation will provide

    support to initiative in RMI.

    Climate Change and Food Security

    Farmers expected to have access to food crops and trees that have desired traits (e.g. drought and salt tolerance). A Climate Change ready germplasm collection selected from within and outside the region, is being developed;

    BMZ CC adaptation & mitigation project proposal;FAO EP RPFS Regional interventions on CC AM (PGRFA, Land

    degradation) & trade facilitation.
