GoUP is to reduce “urban sprawl.”
By LRT system, urban sprawl can be controlled.
By smartly choosing the LRT lines, the growth of a city can be manipulated as desired.
LRT helps build “livable cities.”

LRT has given city planners new hope in achieving their aims of reducing suburban sprawl and shifting focus from the freeway to urban transit.
Many who are against LRT simply are not evaluating a bigger socialpicture that can best be describedas “quality-of-life” or “livable cities.”

Transit is being woven into a partnership that includes municipalities and developers, all trying to rejuvenate old neighborhoods and create new ones with the added goals of a healthy environment, job growth, and business investment.

After almost 30 years without any trams since 1960s , Turkey is experiencing a revival in trams.
Established in 1992, the tram system of Istanbul earned the best large-scale tram management award in 2005.
Another award winning tram network belongs to Eskişehir, a city with a new tram system opened in 2004.
Several other cities are planning or constructing tram lines, usually with modern low-flow trams.

HISTORY OF TRAM/LRT IN TURKEY
First horse-drawn tram in Turkey was operated between Azakkapı and Beşiktaş, Istanbul in 1896.
This tram was electirified in 1909 and put in service at several different lines.
All trams were electrified in 1914 in Istanbul.
In Izmir, the 3rd largest city laying at the coast of Aegean Sea trams were used at Konak-Göztepe route in 1884.
In Istanbul trams were first demounted in the Anatolian part of the city and then all were dismounted in 1967.
Tram services were discontinued in Izmir in 1954.
After almost 30 years, first tram service was started in Istanbul-Beyoglu between Şişhane and Taksim Square in 1990.
Following that, LRT service was started in 1990 in Istanbul.

One example of something in between Metro and trams is the "Ankaray" system in the city of Ankara, Turkey.
Ankaray is called "light metro", but the vehicles are clearly heavier and longer than usual trams, and also mostly underground and grade-separated. It could be called a metro but isn't since there is a separate system called Ankara’s Metro.
Cities with Light Rail Transit systems: Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Eskişehir, Konya, Antalya, Kayseri and Gaziantep (under construction), and Samsun (bidding process will start soon)

ISTANBUL: The first LRT line was opened in the early 90s, and since then, the city has increasingly found rail to be a solution to the looming traffic gridlock in this megacity of over 12 million people.
Six lines of metro, LRT and tram carry 720,000 passengers every day over 53 km.
The system is running at capacity and the city is not extensively covered, but with the uncompromising efforts and commitment of Istanbul Ulasim Department, several km of new lines or extensions will further improve the situation.

Other big cities (Kayseri and Gaziantep) have already LRT or tram systems that are under constrution and some others (such as Samsun) already planned to have.
