EXTENSION PROGRAM:THE PLACE TO BE

For more than 17 years the Extension Program has been offering its students an exceptional academic experience. We

propose not only a high quality, full-fledged linguistic program but onethat during the week also covers all the aspects of American

culture through its traditions and history. Throughout the years, we have established a reputation of excellence and hard work thanks to our team of

teaching professionals who are all English mother tongue speakers and hold a teaching degree; the majority of whom also hold a Masters from the United States

educational system and are trained in teaching the English language and not just Englishas a foreign language. At the start of each Summer Camp, they prove themselves withinnovation and creativity in establishing an original linguistic approach that brings out themaximum learning potential in each student in conjunction with their aptitude while motivating them with a constructive critical eye, imagination and making them feel part of thegroup. Our mission: to give each language learner the necessary tools that will help themdevelop their individual talents and groom them into building their individual path towardssuccess.

The Extension Programfounded in 1995

Language classes are grouped by age andlevel of English: beginner, intermediate, advanced, fluent.

Class time, dedicated to the study of language, is integrated with arts and crafts, music and drama, in an effort to enhance thelearning experience. Storytelling and showand tell are some of the projects designed toencourage self-expression, self-confidenceand curiosity. All activities circle around atheme in order to achieve total languageimmersion.

The drama team, comprised of theater specialists and homeroom teachers, will produce a show scheduled for Friday, July12th.

All students have the opportunity to performin and be an integral part of the “making of”the production.

Props, songs and costumes are selected anddesigned by the students under their teachers’thoughtful guidance. Providing an interdisci-plinary learning environment allows for agreater and smoother acquisition of the language.

Class sizes are between 15 and 20 studentswhere a teacher addresses each child’s indi-vidual needs and talents.

Students hailing from around the world sharetheir unique contribution with teachers andfellow classmates as they come together as ateam to “connect” and make the most of theirexperience. New friendships and vibrant creative activities await anyone joining theExtension Program Summer Camp family.

THE MISSISSIPPI RIVERFACTS, SONGS AND LITERATURE

The length of the Mississippi River is approximately 2,340 miles. Itis the fourth longest river in the world and flows through ten US states:Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois,Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The first bridge built across the MississippiRiver was in 1855 with the first railroad bridge finished a year later in 1856.The Mississippi River serves as a water supply for 70 towns and cities.

The Mississippi River has had strong historical significance in theUSA from Native American tribes through European explorers. It may be themost musical river in the entire world. Blues, jazz and folk songs were allcreated along the river. There is an abundance of literature inspired by theriver’s character and the cultural diversity of the people who have residedalong its banks. Many of Mark Twain’s famous stories take place near theriver, this includes the well known “Adventures of Huckleberry Flinn”.Author Tennessee Williams lived in New Orleans for several years and theriver’s influence is a constant undercurrent in his works.

The Mississippi River includes a variety of organisms and ecosystems.Today the river needs protection from pollution and over development.Students will learn about what has been done to save one of the world’sgreatest rivers. Workshops will be conducted to raise awareness of majorenvironmental issues.

THE MISSISSIPPI RIVERFACTS, SONGS AND LITERATURE
