• Generation of large volumes of raw data poses its own challenges for storing and analytics.

• The challenge is also transforming the organization as a data-driver organization.

• Ownership of Big Data and focus on getting the analytics right.

• Basic data analytical skills will not suffice – we will need people who know analytics and understand what this new data can do for their business.

Beacons • Beacons are low-cost, low-powered transmitters equipped with

Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE (also called Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Smart) that can be used to deliver proximity-based, context-aware messages.

• Ideal for detecting smartphones indoors, where GPS isn’t always effective, and sending alerts and data to apps on those devices. Also while GPS operates at a macro range, beacons work at micro range, giving brands an opportunity to interact with customers not only at a store level but also target narrowly at an aisle or a fixture level.

• Range in which beacons function in the interim of NFC (too narrow) and GPS (too broad) ranges, and that is what makes it more effective than the other two.

• Beacons rely on the two-way communication (that the BLE technology allows) between an app and a strategically placed beacon. The technology gives brands and businesses an opportunity to build innovative proximity-aware apps for any Bluetooth Low Energy-capable mobile device.

Beacons • It’s the first proximity technology (wmobile platforms) and are

inexpensive, have a battery life of 2 years and being low-energy, they don’t even eat into a user’s phone battery.

• .The seeds for this revolutionary technological advancement were sown last year, when Apple introduced iBeacon during the launch of iOS7 at the World Wide Developer Conference.

• Apple’s iBeacon is built into all its devices manufactured since 2013. Around 200 million iOS devices are thus, forever enabled to serve as transmitters and receivers.

Barriers to Beacons Adoption

• The only barrier to wide adoption of beacon technology is

– several layers of security

– customers have to turn on Bluetooth,

– accept location services on the relevant app

– and opt-in to receive in-store or indoor
