BOB PROCTOR GOAL ACHIEVER

Goals are an exciting subject; goals represent change. We set goals to improvethe quality of our life. William James, one of America’s earliest psychologistsgave us some magnificent advice on this subject when he said,

“If you are going to change your life, there are only 3 points to remember:1. Do it immediately;2. Do it flamboyantly;3. No exceptions.”

That’s great advice and an excellent format to follow. Regardless of your presentsituation, proceed immediately to set a goal to achieve something so big, so exhilaratingthat it excites and scares you at the same time. It must be a goal that is so appealing,so much in harmony with your spiritual core, that you cannot get it out of your mind. This goal must be one that will dominate your thinking all of your waking hours.

Where do ideas like these come from? Where do we find them? Are ideas of thisnature only available to a very select few? It would certainly appear that way. Not so,they are available to everyone. They come from inside, from your own spiritual essenceand they will flow into your consciousness when you remove the centuries of ignoranceand the limiting concepts that have been layered on top of a spark of idealism that liesdeep in the core of your being.

“There is a spark of idealism within every human beingthat can be fanned into flame,

and will bring forth extraordinary results.”Louis Brandeis

The great religious teachers, the philosophers, and industrial leaders of history haveall told us time and time again, that all things are possible. We hear it, we read it, weeven verbalize it, but only one person out of 100 has the belief required to make it happen. It’s sad, but true, that a very high percentage of our population never establish a clearlydefined goal. And, the few who do, frequently set goals that are truly not worthy ofthem.

You have infinite potential. There is no one alive who can even accurately guess atwhat you are capable of accomplishing. Regardless of the conditions or circumstancethat may presently be affecting your life, I’m going to suggest that you mentally setaside any feeling of lack or limitation and attempt to follow the instructions I am aboutto share with you. There is a real possibility that by doing this, your life will never bethe same again. Good things will begin happening with constant regularity.

Williams James said, “You should begin immediately.” To begin to establish a goalthat is worthy of you, one you are prepared to trade your life for, you will have to ignoreyour present situation and activate your imagination.

Napoleon Hill suggested, “The imagination is literally the workshop wherein arefashioned all plans created by man.” He also told us, when we begin using ourimagination, we were putting the most marvellous, miraculous, inconceivably powerfulforce that the world has ever known to work for us.

Truly great goals are always originated in fantasy. Many people will tell you thatfantasy is an idle waste of time, when, in truth, it is the first stage of the creative processin the designing of your future. It could not be any other way because you are movinginto a new world, choosing to accomplish something far beyond anything you havepreviously accomplished in your past.

You could have a library of information on the subject of goals, and still be stuck ...getting the same results, year after year. Unless and unti l you have a very clearunderstanding of paradigms, how they are formed and how they impact your performanceand results, it ’s highly unlikely that any part of your life will greatly improve.

As I cover the information in this presentation, there are three key elements it isrecommended you look for, all of which are covered in the Goal Achiever program.

1. The part of the mind that is engaged in setting a goal; goal setting is anintellectual exercise.

2. The part of the mind that controls the achievement of a goal; goal achievingis a lawful process.

3. How important repetition of the proper information is to altering paradigms.

DECISION

The subject matter that I am about to share with you could have an enormous impacton your life if you will take the time to review what I am about to share with you two orthree times so that it truly sinks into the depths of your mind.

There is a single mental move you can make which, in a millisecond, will solveenormous problems for you. It has the potential to improve almost any personal orbusiness situation you will ever encounter ... and it could literally propel you down thepath to incredible success. We have a name for this magic mental activity ... it is calledDECISION.

I suppose there are a number of subjects that school neglected to teach us. Onethat stands out above the rest is decision – definite decision. The major weakness of alleducational systems is that they neither teach nor encourage the habit of definitedecision. Napoleon Hill wrote an entire chapter on the subject and suggested it is theonly way to master procrastination. The habit of indecision acquired because thedeficiencies of our school system goes with the student into the occupation he or shechooses … if, in fact, they choose their occupation. Generally, a youth just out of schoolseeks any job that can be found, taking the first position they find because they havefallen into the habit of indecision. 98 out of every 100 people working for wages todayare in the positions they hold because they lacked the definiteness of decision to plan adefinite position.

Napoleon Hill made it very clear in his writings, that definiteness of decision alwaysrequires courage, sometimes great courage. A friend and business colleague, Dr. CaroleN. Hildebrand wrote a couple of paragraphs on decision that I believe should be chiseledin granite and placed on the grounds of every educational institution worldwide.

She said, “There is a corollary element that must go hand in hand with the decision... and that is commitment. IT MUST BE A COMMITTED DECISION. Most of us have weakdecision-making muscles ... we do not even recognize what it means to make a realdecision. We fail to realize the force of change, a truly congruent, committed decisionmakes. Part of our problem is that we use the term decision so loosely that it has cometo describe our wishes, not our commitments. Instead of making decisions, we state ourpreferences. The word decision comes from the Latin roots, “de,” meaning “from” and“caedere,” meaning “to cut” ... therefore a decision means cutting from any otherpossibility. A TRUE DECISION, then, means you are committed to achieving a result, andthen cutting yourself off from any other possibi lity.

Committed decisions show up in two places—your calendar and your checkbook. No matter what you say you value, or even think your priorities are, you have only to lookat last year’s calendar and checkbook to see the decisions you have made about what

you truly value. For example, I am committed to growth, both professionally andpersonally. A review of my calendar always shows multiple continuing education courses, seminars, and workshops in both the personal growth area, as well as in my profession. My checkbook is filled with tuition disbursements, purchases of books and videos. Bottomline ... see how you have reserved your time ... look at your expenditures ... those are theroad maps to the decisions you have made in the past.

After making a true decision, especially the tough ones, we usually feel a tremendousburden has been lifted from our shoulders.”

RESPONSIBILITY

Responsibility is a choice. I often refer to it as being the key to freedom. Yourfuture can be everything you have ever dreamed about and then some. You have thetalent and tools to experience one beautiful day after another. That is, in fact, what Ibelieve the architect of the universe had in mind for you when you were created. If thatwas not so, you would have never been endowed with such awesome powers.

My good friend and mentor, Val Van De Wall wrote, “When a person takesresponsibility for their life and the results they are obtaining, they will cease to blameothers as the cause of their results. Since you cannot change other people, blame isinappropriate. Blaming others causes a person to remain bound in a prison of their ownmaking. When you take responsibility, blame is eliminated and you are free to grow.”

Those who haven’t taken responsibility for their results and their life often findthemselves in a mental prison, and in many ways, a mental prison is a much worse placeto live than a federal prison or penitentiary. Mental torment can destroy just abouteverything that is necessary for a meaningful life: self image, self respect, relationshipsand a host of other attributes. It will even cause a person’s physical health to deteriorate.

Responsibility opens the door and permits you to walk into freedom. If you findyourself confined to such a mental state, understand there is a way out. Escape isencouraged and possible. The master key that fits the lock is clearly marked and iswithin everyone’s reach. It is responsibility.

I think it would be a fair comment to say that the people we have the greatestrespect for are those who have accepted responsibility for every aspect of their lives. These individuals rarely duck responsibility by blaming someone else. When faced withan unfavorable situation, they are usually aware they have attracted the negativecircumstance and know everything happens for a reason. When this happens, they merelylearn their lesson and keep reaching out, above and beyond to the new frontier, takingresponsibility for whatever happens, every step of the way.

22

When a person refuses to accept responsibility for their life, they reject theiruniqueness and they turn all of their special powers over to other people, situations orcircumstances. They are then no longer in control of their future. They will be hopingsomething good will happen, but because of past experiences they will very likely beexpecting something they do not want to happen. When you accept responsibility foryour life and for the results which you alone determine, you will develop confidence thatyour dreams can be realized, that your plans can be carried out. Awareness of thismagnificent truth is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest thing that can happen inyour life. It ’s Alladin’s lamp, a magic wand, the tooth fairy all wrapped up in one.

Dr. Rollo May, a distinguished psychiatrist, once wrote, “The opposite of courage inour society is not cowardice, it is conformity.” It requires great courage to takeresponsibility for your life. It ’s so much easier to blame someone else or somethingoutside of you. George Bernard Shaw said, “People are always blaming theircircumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who geton in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, they make them.” I believe Shaw was right. In my opinion, those who win big in life take responsibility and create their own destiny.

Earlier on it was suggested that responsibility brings with it a certain amount offreedom. For some, these last few paragraphs may be life-altering. And, with the properunderstanding, I guarantee it has the power to free you of unnecessary mental weightthat you may have been carrying around with you all of your life. The concept to whichI’m referring has been misunderstood by so many and has probably single-handedly ruinedmore lives than one can possibly imagine. Ignorance of this principle will most certainlycause a person to experience the destructive emotions of anger, guilt and resentment.

Here it is: there is a vast difference between being responsible “for” and beingresponsible “to.” It seems so simple, but I don’t want you to let its apparent simplicityfool you. I’m going to repeat it again. There is a big difference between being responsible“for” and being responsible “to.”

It’s not uncommon to hear parents blame themselves and assume responsibility forsomething that has happened to their child, and that child might be 40 years old! “Ifonly we ...” Or, “I should have …” Far too often we inappropriately assume responsibilityfor something, when in fact our real duty to the person may have ended 20 years ago.Unfortunately for most, they carry that baggage around with them for life, never realizingthey have a choice.

The correct interpretation of this is: you are responsible FOR your feelings and yourresults - not another person's. You may be responsible TO another person for one thing oranother, but not FOR another person. The exception, of course, is when you choose to take onthe responsibility of raising children until they reach the age of maturity. In that case, you areboth responsible TO and FOR them, until such time as they become responsible for themselves.

At times, it might even be appealing to contemplate having another person take onour responsibilities for us. We could even trick ourselves into believing that by doingthis, we would be more free to play, have fun and do the things we wanted. Withoutserious thought, it might never enter our mind that exactly the opposite would happen. When you permit others to take on your responsibilities, you become dependent on them. They become the giver and you become the receiver. Your well-being is dependent upontheir generosity. Hopefully, at some point, it will become very clear that this kind ofbehaviour only leads to a life of lack, limitation, resentment and confusion on the partsof both the giver and the receiver.

I ’ve never witnessed anything posit ive that has come from the misuse ofresponsibility. When you take on the responsibility for another person's feelings, results,or actions, you destroy their self-reliance and self-respect.

You are responsible for all of the results in your life. You are responsible for yourhappiness. You are responsible for your health. You are responsible for your wealth. You are responsible for your emotional state. Regardless of what has happened in thepast, the future lies ahead with an open slate, waiting for you to take control and createa wonderful life for yourself.

Winston Churchill, who certainly knew something about responsibility, said,“Responsibility is the price of greatness.”

Here’s a marvellous affirmation that you can verbalize every night before you go tosleep and every morning as you step out of bed.

I am responsible for my life ...for my feelings ...

for my personal growth ...and for every result I get.
