Christmas yesterday, a look back;thanks, again, LMWD!

    Quidnuncs

    Neighborchito dela torre

For the rst time, since my as-

    signment to Samar (Catbalogan in

year 2001 upon completion of my

    government scholarship on a mas-

ters course at the University of the

    Philippines), I spent my Christmas

eve and day with my family. The

evening hours until 3 a.m. of De-

cember 25, 2012 were full of joy

    and laughter. My 5-year-old third

    granddaughter, Joschine (Kinder II

at Alpha Omega Learning Center), authored it all, after she nished

    opening the Christmas presents

which reached her on Dec. 24. At

past 3 p.m. of Dec. 24, my rst

    granddaughter, 8-year-old Gladys

(she recently had her rst Holy

    Communion as Grade Two pupil

    at STEFTI [St. Therese Educa-

    tional Foundation of Tacloban Inc.]

    , came with a big square-shaped

    chocolate cake on which appeared

hristmas and New Year are like twin cele-

brations held in a row during both of which

    people prepare abundant and sumptuous

foods on their tables to greet the two events. It is

then during this time that people could eat to their

hearts content, end up in the hospital, or even die

of gluttony if moderation is not observed.

Since not all foods are good for ones health as

some could even ruin it, people with particulardiseases and are disallowed to eat certain foods

should guard themselves against those. They

should not give in to the lure of delicious foods

whose intake would just bring them harm than

good. They should avoid them as much as possible

or else they might impair their health and drain

    their pockets.

For sure, the holiday season should be for ones

enjoyment and relaxation together with friends

and loved ones. But if one is not careful

enough, the food-laden festivities could trig-

ger some illness attacks. Foods with high

cholesterol content, or uric acid, or sugar,

etc., can aggravate existing ailments that, if

not cured right away, can threaten ones life.

Whats the use of celebrating the occasions

when one would just end up sick in bed as a

result? How unwise it is, and what a waste, when

money is unnecessarily spent on something

that results from carelessness. When you

know that you ought not to touch a certain

food or drink per doctors advice yet you still

touch it, it is sheer stubbornness; and if you

have to spend money for medication because

of that, then thats your fault because, in the

frst place, it could have been avoided. page5

    merrymaking was cut short

an advance party sent by a

    became Typhoon Quinta,

threatening the whole ofEastern Visayas and parts

    Prayer for the Nation and

    for Those who Serve in

    Public Office

God, our Father, you guide everythingin wisdom and love. Accept the prayers weoffer for our nation; by the wisdom of our

leaders and integrity of our citizens, may

harmony and justice be secured and may

there be lasting prosperity and peace.

Almighty and eternal God, You know the

longings of our hearts and You protect our

rights. In your goodness, watch over those

in authority, so that people everywhere may

    enjoy freedom, security and peace.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus

you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever

Thursday 3rd Day in the Octave of ChristmasSAINT JOHN, Apostle, Evangelist1Jn 1:1-4 Ps 97 Jn 20:1a, 2-8

    THE EMPTY TOMB

On the rst day of the week Mary of Magdala ran and went to Si-mon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we dont know wherethey put him. So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to thetomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter andarrived at the tomb rst; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there,

but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into thetomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered hishead, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Thenthe other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tombrst, and he saw and believed.

    THE PASTORS SECRET

Everybody sees different things in different ways. Once I was stay-ing as a guest of my friends John and Ellen at their summer house neara popular vacation spot on the water. One day I accompanied Ellen on ashopping trip to buy John a present for his birthday. While in town, we

bump into a couple of my parishioners who happened to be vacation-ing nearby. We exchanged greetings, introductions, and pleasantries, and continued our way. A week later, the parishioners who had seen mewith Ellen conded in me after Mass on Sunday that my secret wassafe with them; they would tell no one of the encounter. People believewhat they want to believe. The other disciple in the story saw thesame thing Mary Mgdalene saw; yet he believed something very dif-ferent. Prayer: O God, when I look at the events of my day, I know you

are blessing me. But sometimes it seems as if you are doing bad thingsto me. Heal my blindness, Lord. Help me to see the truth of your lovefor me. Action: Write down three reasons why you believe that Christis risen from the dead. What do you see that makes you believe?(Between Sundays by Paul Boudreau, published by Paulines. Just as I had predicted, Leyte Met-

ropolitan Water District gave its most

wonderful present the other day (Dec.25)

to Taclobanons: water from faucets that

found its way to washing and cooking are-

as inside Tacloban homes. Actually, there

was enough daytime water pressure sinceDec. 23, except that it was much strongeron Christmas Day. My younger son, a pri-vate bank employee who, like me, wants

water always within reach, was all smilesas he let the water from the faucet outsideour house ll the wide basins for his laun-dering schedule. Then he jokingly or wasit quizzically commented that perhapssomeone big at LMWD is giving me tipsabout good water service schedules that Icould guess right that good service whichLMWD can always be capable of deliver-ing. I riposted, I have a strong feelingthat LMWD will let this stay until the rstweek of January, 2013, after I told him thatI had not been to the LMWD in the past20 days and that neither had I been talkedto by anyone from this quasi-governmentwater utility agency.

By 1to 2 p.m. of Christmas Day, oodwater lled the lower half portion of theinterior road of Brgy. 5, brought about bythe typhoon-connected (Quinta, the 17thtyphoon to visit the Philippines in 2012)rain. It rose to as high as 10 inches. Since

it was low tide in the highly urbanized cityof the Waray Region, ood eventually re-ceded, but slight intermittent showers af-ter 2 p.m. kept the concrete road wet anduntidy.

Time to watch Enteng Kabisote!,my younger son exclaimed by 4 p.m., andoff his own family went, to RobinsonsPlace where, he told me earlier, Vic Sot-tos and Bong Revillas were being exhib-ited in that malls theatres in time for therst-day exhibitions of the movie, whichalso features the child dancing sensationdiscovered by Eat Bulaga, in all the maintheatres nationwide.

over some problems if needbe, and to get to know how

    Such a moment is very

vital if we are to consider

    the close family ties that

    Filipinos have had for gen-

    culture. For centuries,

    this has been made possi-

ble in part by quality time

    spent together around din-

    around local wines such

as lambanog or coconutjuice called tuba, or simply

    around local songs sang

    together to the accompani-

    ment of indigenous musical

    instruments.

    This close family ties in-

    stinctively prevails among

    Filipino families like a

    built-in propensity. One

    need not teach each mem-

    ber, even the young ones,

    regarding the necessity of

    preserving family tradi-

    tionsthey automatically

do so. Amid this closeness, however, there is this threat

    of separation brought about

    by distance that eventually

    settles in between members

in the course of time. Going

    places just cannot be helped

    and this, to some extent,

    causes family closeness to

    deteriorate.
