Filter Application - General Information

This filter is designed for use in domestic/residential swimming pool installa-tions with correctly sanitised fresh or salt chlorinated water. Suitable for usewith sand or Zelbrite filter media.

1) Locate the filter system as close to the pool as practical.

2) Place the filter on a level stable foundation, preferably a concrete pad orpaving.

3) Position all equipment to provide ease of access for future servicing. Ensurethat there is sufficient clear space above the filter to allow for removal of themulti-port valve for servicing.

4) Protect the filter and pump from weather and direct sunlight by ensuringthat they are properly housed.

5) Ensure there is sufficient space to provide adequate ventilation to electricpump motor.

6) Clean a new pool as well as possible before filling pool and operating filter.Excess dirt and large particles of foreign matter in the system can causeserious damage to the filter and pump.

7) Ensure pump is compatible with filter specifications.

Installation of Filter should only be carried out by qualified personnel.Ensure that the under-drain assembly (hub, laterals & tube) are properlyassembled & installed prior to adding filter media (sand or Zelbrite).

1) The filter internals comprise of a collector hub and eight (8) laterals, whichare supplied partially assembled and are stored in the filter tank prior toshipment.

2) Carefully inspect the laterals and hub prior to assembly for any visibledefects.

3) Position the hub in the centre of the tank and push the laterals down untilthey engage with an audible “click”.

4) Cover the centre tube to prevent filter media from entering the hub andlateral assembly, then slowly pour the required weight of filter media intothe filter tank. Ensure that the top of the sand/media bed is level. Ensure thatthe centre tube remains central in the neck of the filter.

5) Remove the centre tube cover and remove all traces of sand/media from thetop of the tank.

6) Place tank ‘O’ring into groove in Multi-port Valveand position the valve on top of the tank, inserting thecentre tube into the recess on the bottom of the valve.Ensure that the threaded port labelled “pump” isfacing in the direction of the pool pump.

7) Fit the tank clamp and tighten the bolts securely.

8) Complete the plumbing between the Multi-port valveand the pool pump. Install the pressure gauge, usethread tape and hand tighten(DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN as valve damage may occur).

9) Complete the plumbing installation.Note: Use pipe fittings (unions) supplied by Onga.

To prevent equipment damage and possible injury, turnpump OFF before changing valve position.

START UP/OPERATION

Hazardous pressure. To avoid explosion and possiblesevere or fatal injury, filter system pressure must not exceed 33 psi (230 kPa)under any circumstances. NEVER test this filter system with compressed air;never operate system with water temperature above 38ºC.

NOTE: Do not add chemicals directly into the pool skimmer. Adding undilutedchemicals may damage equipment and void warranty.

1. Open system valve and make sure pump is filled with water. Make sure poolwater level is 2” (50mm) above bottom of skimmer opening.

2. With pump OFF, set valve to ‘BACKWASH’ position.

3. Start pump, circulating water through filter to waste.NOTE: To prevent pump from running dry, be sure water level never dropsbelow bottom of skimmer inlet. Add water to pool if necessary to keepskimmer flooded while back-washing and rinsing.

4. Backwash until water runs clear (1-5 minutes).

5. Stop pump; set valve to ‘RINSE’ position.

7

INSTALLATION (Continued)

Hazardous pressure. Clamp will not hold unless it is seatedproperly! DO NOT START PUMP until the Multiport valve clamp is seatedand tightened securely. All glued fittings and pipe work should be allowed to dry to atmosphere for24 hours before closing installation. Failure to do so could cause injury orinstallation failure. The fittings on these filters are constructed of ABS. Some PVC jointingcompounds are incompatible with ABS possibly causing failure to theproduct. Check compound suitability prior to use.

If there are leaks from beneath valve/clamp area, STOPPUMP, release all pressure, remove clamp and valve andclean sealing surfaces.

START UP/OPERATION (Continued)

6. Start pump; run pump for 1 minute.Note: for Zelbrite repeat steps 1 through 6 three times.

7. Stop pump; set valve to ‘FILTER’ position.

8. Filter is now ready for service.

9. Record clean starting filter pressure gauge reading as a reference.

10. For new pools, backwash once a day until pool water is sparkling clear.Backwash when pressure gauge shows 5 to 7 psi (35 to 50kPa) higher thanclean starting pressure (refer step 9).

SERVICE &MAINTENANCE

General:Wash outside of filter with a mild detergent and water. Rinse off with hose.

NOTE: DO NOT use solvents to clean filter; solvents may damage components insystem.

Inspect sand/media bed at least once a year to remove foreign material which hasnot been back-washed out of the system.

NOTE: When the sand/media bed gets hard and crusty on top, remove all the oldsand/media and replace it with new sand/media. Alternatively, if the pressure gaugedoes not return to within 40kPa of clean filter pressure after back-washing, it istime to replace the filter media.

Weekly Pool Equipment Inspection1. Check pressure during operation. When pressure is 5 to 7 psi (35 to 50 kPa)

higher than clean operating pressure, backwash filter (see instructions under“Startup/Operation, Page 7).

2. Except during hot weather with heavy skimmer loads, operating filter 6 to 12hours per day should be sufficient. Carefully monitor water chemical balanceand follow recommendations of your local pool professional.

8

Water MaintenanceKeep water level at least 2” (50mm) above bottom of skimmer opening.Failure to do so can allow air to enter system, causing pump to lose prime and airto enter filter.

Maintain pH between 7.2 and 7.6 in pool.

To prevent damage to system components, keep watertemperature below 38ºC at all times.

Vacuum Pool (Refer cleaner operating manual or consult your local poolprofessional):1. Fill vacuum hose by submerging in water from one end to the other.

2. To vacuum, insert hose into skimmer suction manifold or into vacuum line inpool wall. See instructions provided by the pool builder or pool manufacturer.Start pump, making sure it is primed and pumping.

3. After vacuuming, clean pump trap basket to remove accumulated debris, thencheck filter pressure gauge. If reading is 5 to 7 psi ( 35 to 50kPa) higher thaninitial operating pressure, backwash filter.

9

SERVICE &MAINTENANCE (Continued)

Lower or Drain Pool1. Turn pump ‘OFF’; set valve handle to ‘WASTE’.

2. Use vacuum cleaner hose and head.

3. Start pump; run until pool is lowered to desired level.

4. Turn pump ‘OFF’ set valve handle to ‘FILTER’.

5. Start pump.

Hazardous pressure. Stop pump and release all pressurefrom system before working on filter, valve, or clamp.

If Multi-port Valve is below pool water level, close suction and discharge valvesbefore disassembly to prevent draining pool.1. Disconnect piping from pump and pool.2. Remove clamp.3. Remove valve from filter top.4. To reinstall valve, follow instructions BE SURE to follow clamp tightening

instructions.
