for this introspection than Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippurand no better place than the synagogue. If our Judaism is tohave real meaning, let us incorporate the teachings of thesedays of awe.

While reflection and confession are very personal and privateendeavors in the realm of our spiritual growth, we realize thatwe also live among others who share our desire to heal bothinternally (Tikun HaNefesh) and to heal our world (TikunOlam) This requires a commitment from each of us at thistime of year to adopt the triad which enables wholeness(Shalom): Prayer (tefilah) Reptentance (teshuvah) and Justdeeds (Tzedakah).

Thoughts of correction must be matched by deeds of correc-tion lest they vanish like a daydream. May your new year befilled with blessing and may you and your loved ones be in-scribed in the Book of Life.

In 2003 Rabbi DavidBaron and the Temple produced a CD, Enlighten, which has elicited outstanding audience and critical review. Ilysia’s stirring rendition of “We Came to Sing in Jerusalem”was chosen to be on the Keeping the Faith, Voices for Israel 2 CD benefiting survivorsof terrorism in Israel (www.voicesforisrael.org/faith/). Her vocal talents were also featured in the title song, “Keeping the Faith.” Ilysia's emotional and powerful versionof "Lift My Eyes" by Sam Glaser was chosen for his 25th Anniversary Tribute CD, Stages.

Prior to her tenure at the Temple, Ilysia enjoyed a successful career entertaining audiences on stage, television, nightclubs and in concert. James Blatt, PresidentLaw Offices of James E. Blatt, A Professional Corporation

Attorney James Blatt grew up in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He had two significant influences in hislife, his mother, Lillian Blatt, and the town in which hegrew up. Both have contributed greatly to the devel-opment of his successful legal career.  His mother

taught him to stand up for what he believed in, to be tough, determined butcaring, and always stressed a deep loyalty to family. As for the influence of hishome town, Punxsutawney, the benefit lay in his observance of the limitedopportunity there.

Attorney James E. Blatt often refers to a phrase that has been ingrained inhim since high school: “A winner never quits and a quitter never wins”.  Mr.Blatt was committed to making a better life for himself than the one in whichhe was raised.  He wanted to become a lawyer. At the age of 17, Mr. Blattheaded to Los Angeles to start a new life. When people comment on howhard it is to practice law successfully in Los Angeles, or anywhere for that mat-ter, Attorney James E. Blatt always replies that it is nothing compared to lifeworking in a coal mine. He keeps a large chunk of coal under glass at his officeas a constant reminder.

A

In Preparation for

ccording to Jewish Law (Halakha) the entire month preceding Rosh Hashana (Elul) is a time for spiritualinventory-taking and reconciliation. In Orthodox synagogues, the shofar is actually sounded every

morning at the daily service (minyan) to awaken us to a repentance frame of mind. I would like to recommenda few steps for you to consider taking in preparation for the Days of Awe.

Reconciliation:Take the first bold step by phone, email or in person with someone you have felt alienatedfrom and enjoy the possible fruits of reconciliation.

Take a few Sacred Moments:Open our beautiful Chagall prayer book and read the meditation passagesbefore coming to temple. I recommend pages 1, 15, 20, 50, 88, 91, 108, 239-268. Try reading one each daybetween now and Yom Kippur. Also, you might want to refamiliarize yourself with the Hebrew refrain to theclassic prayers. If you don’t read Hebrew, try reviewing the transliterations: “Avot” on page 15, “B’rosh Hashana”on page 98, “Ha-Yom” on page 109, “Avinu Malkeynu” on page 49, and “Barchu” on pages 33 and 34.

Frequently Asked Questions at Yom Kippur Question: What if I can’t fast or must drink water with my meds?

Answer: Jewish Law insists that anyone ill, or taking medications or pregnant women do not have to fast. (However out of respect for fellow worshipers please do notbring food or drinks into the sanctuary).

Question: What if I can’t stand each time the Holy Ark is opened?

Answer: Please feel free to remain seated if rising for each Arkopening is too arduous.

Question: What if my parents are still alive –shouldn’t I leave for Yizkor?

Answer: No, you can recite the Yizkor memorial prayers for other relatives or fallen American and Israeli soldiers. It is superstition that you must skip Yizkor if your parents are still living.
