State of the U for YOU, Its All About You! Last Wednesday during Common Hour, students met at the UC Theater to hear from Chancellor Larry Clark about how LSU Shreveport is doing at the start of the fall 2016 semester. Without the students, this university would not be what it is, Chancellor Clark said. Its all about the students. Its all about you and we want to provide you everything we can through academics, events, and community involvement to help shape you into a successful student and future professional. The Student Activities Board (SAB) provided the first 100 students with a free sandwich lunch from Jasons Deli and bottled soft drinks. Among the students were Greek sororities and fraternities who

received academic credit for participating in the important event. SGA President, Dennis Henderson, and SAB President, Lance Rich, spoke briefly about events associated with their respective organizations and how students can take part in the campus and community activities. At the conclusion, Chancellor Clark answered questions from the audience about scholarships, university housing, and the swimming pool in the Health and Physical Education building. Faculty from Financial Aid, Student Development, and Career Services were also available to students after the program to address any questions or concerns. The event was live streamed on the LSUS Facebook page, and if you would like to view it CLICK HERE.

Constitution Day Lecture at LSUS was held on September 16 Atty Brian C. Flanagan delivered the 33rd annual Constitution Day lecture on Marbury v. Madison: Most Important Supreme Court Case on Friday, September 16 at 8:30 a.m. at LSUS.

  • According to William Pederson, LSUS professor of political Science, The Marbury case is the most famous case in the history of the U.S. Supreme court. It was written by John Marshall, the unanimous choice of constitutional scholars as Americas greatest justice on the High Bench. Pederson went on to say that Marshal justified giving the Court the power of judicial review meaning it could declare legislative and executive acts unconstitutional and thereby made the Court a co-equal branch of government. After that decision suddenly everyone wanted to be on the Court. Flanagan is an associate at Blanchard, Walker, OQuin and Roberts law firm in Shreveport. He graduated magna cum laude from LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 2013, where he was a member of the Louisiana Law Review. He also has a MLA degree from LSUS in 2010. The Lecture was co-sponsored by the LSUS International Lincoln Center for American Studies and the Student Activities Board (SAB).

ArkLaTex Interdisciplinary Cell Conference to be held at LSU Shreveport A new conference, ArkLaTex Interdisciplinary Cell Conference or ArkLaTex ICC for short, is being held here at LSUS on Saturday November 5th, 2016 from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. The event is sponsored by LSUS faculty and research staff members Dr. Elahe Mahdavian (Biochemistry); Dr. Alena Smith (Research Associate for the LSUS Cancer Research Core); Dr. Brain Salvatore (Chemistry), and Madison Wynn. Students across all STEM disciplines will have the opportunity to apply their research and discoveries towards cell biology. The topic will focus on using interdisciplinary approaches to solving today's cell and molecular biology questions, ranging from bioinformatics to biochemistry. The primary goals of the 2016 ArkLaTex ICC will include practicing collaboration techniques while optimizing poster and oral presentation skills. Combined with emphasizing the importance of a balanced hypothesis and controlled experiments, the students and post-docs will leave the conference with a larger knowledge base to carry themselves to national level conferences, grant submissions, and article writing. We are inviting all students, post-doctoral graduates, and principal investigators to present a poster. All of the abstracts, posters, and oral presentations submitted will be critiqued and positive feedback will be sent to all participants. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Marisela Rodriguez, PhD from the CDC. Dr. Rodriguez currently works in the influenza lab. All investigators across the disciplines are invited and welcome to attend. Our theme for 2016-2017 is "Cohesion across the disciplines". Come and collaborate with us! To register for this conference, CLICK HERE.

  • Will Monroe is the Head of Instructional Technology at

the Louisiana State University Law Center. His work at the

Law Center gives him the privilege of working with

talented students and engaged faculty as they use

learning technologies in legal education. His role also

affords him the opportunity to be active in campus-wide

faculty development initiatives at LSU. While

working at LSU, he completed a PhD dissertation that

explored the use of deliberate practice and video annotation

tools to support the development of professional legal interviewing skills. Will believes that it is an exciting time in legal education and a unique privilege to do so at a

    university like LSU.

    1. Concern for Emilie Gibson. Campus thoughts

continue to go out to Trey Gibson concerning his daughter, Emilie, who just traveled to St. Judes for major surgery. The outpouring of friendship and concern has been greatly appreciated by Trey (and Emilie). The poster below was signed primarily by students after last weeks State of the Union event. Thank you to Angel Martin for her help in the creation of the poster. The Gibson family has created a Facebook page to update everyone on Emilies progress. If you would like to view that page, CLICK HERE. In addition, a GoFundMe page was created to help with travel and medical bills. If you are interested in helping, you can CLICK HERE.

    2. LPC Meeting on Friday. The LSUS Planning Council

will have its regular monthly meeting this Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Assembly Room (Third Floor) of the Noel Memorial Library. I will propose that Michael Meeks and John Vassar co-chair a Strategy Facilitation Board that will be supported by Strategic Planning Groups within the four original LSUS schools. After the development of ideas, the Strategy Facilitation Board would come back to the LPC for final feedback.

    3. TOPS. LSUS SGA President Dennis Henderson was my guest at the Shreveport Rotary Club meeting earlier today. Gov. John Bel Edwards spoke. During the Q&A session, Dennis asked him about what is likely to happen with TOPS support for the spring semester. Gov. Edwards responded that TOPS funding is likely to remain where it is right now- at 46%. He said it is unlikely that further funding will be identified. However, he is optimistic that full funding for TOPS can be restored for Fall, 2017. This is not good news for students. We will continue to explore other means to support our students.

  • 4. Personal Note. This past weekend I was at the

nations largest automobile show for orphan cars (cars no longer produced such as Packard, Pontiac, Hudson, Tucker etc.) in Ypsilanti, Michigan. I moderated a panel on the Tucker car after the showing of the movie, Tucker, in a theater very similar to Shreveports Robinson Center. Later I shared my bibliography project on the Tucker automobile that contains over 2000 entries for publications concerning the car or company from 1935 until today (begun prior to my coming to LSUS in 1981). I answered individual questions throughout the weekend. It was fun to get lost in Tucker mania.

Tucker Car #44 (of 51 built). Needs Restoration. Worth now well over $1M. To be: Over $3M value.
