Kadaik Dam contributing to regional development.

Kadaik Dam was inaugurated on 30 April 2007as the government is building dams and sluice gates inits drive to develop national economy based on agri-culture. It is situated near Kadaik village in PaungTownship of Mon State. The facility can irrigate 1000acres of farmland and prevent floods.

The dam has catchement area of eight squaremiles and is built by damming Kadaik Creek. Theaverage amount of inflow water is 59,000 acre feetand the height of its embankment is 134 feet. Thedam, contributing to the regional development, haslength of 5,200 feet.

People’s Desire

As the majority of the nation’s populationresides in rural regions, emphasis is beingplaced on enhancement of the socio-economicstatus of rural people. In that regard, thegovernment has been building irrigationfacilities such as dams and reservoirs for supplyof drinking water and water for agriculturalpurpose.

Meanwhile, underground water tappingand river water pumping projects wereextensively implemented, and farmers havebeen able to grow monsoon and summer paddy,beans and pulses, edible oil crops and cotton,making better use of those irrigation facilities.

For better transport, roads and bridgeslarge and small are being built along withvillage-to-village roads and town-to-villageroads. With those infrastructures, local peoplecan travel from one place to another withpeace of mind and trade and commerce in theregion is in full swing.

As part of regional development tasks, theopening of self-reliant power generator andlibrary in Indaing Village, Kyaukse Township,opening of new roads in Gangaw and the newMakyikan-Kanhla tarred road in MagwayDivision, the hand-over of rural health centresin Yekyaw Village and Twantay Tawa Villagein Twantay Township and opening of newstation hospital in Kyauktaung Village inPauktaw Township, Rakhine State were heldrecently.

Moreover, the extended opening of newschool buildings and self-reliant rural librariesin different regions has been carried outsuccessfully. With the emergence of thosefacilities, local people have now been able topursue education in their own regions andwiden their scope of knowledge all the more.

At a time when efforts are being made forregional development, well-wishers are makingdonations and contributing their servicestowards the project. And such generouscontributions would surely bring progress andprosperity to transport, health, education andeconomic sectors of rural regions.

Mr Bede Gilbert Corry was born on 11 February1964 and obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Hons)Degree from Victoria University of Wellington. Hejoined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade ofNew Zealand in 1989. Mr Bede Gilbert Corry hasserved as Second and then First Secretary in Canberrafrom 1992 to 1995. troops to Afghanistan, according to a plan approvedon Thursday by the Supreme Council for CountryDefence (CSAT).

“The CSAT approved the deployment of additional600 troops to increase the forces deployed on the Af-ghanistan theatre of operations, and the maximum numberof troops deployed could reach 1,798,” according to aPress release of the President’s office. Currently, thereare 1,290 Romanian troops acting in missions abroad,among whom 1,020 are deployed in Afghanistan.

In 2010, the Romanian Army will be able to oper-ate in missions outside borders with 3,753 soldiers.

HELSINKI, 22 Jan — A Finnish Air Force F-18 Su-per Hornet crashed in the south of the country butcaused no deaths, local media said on Thursday.

The fighter crashed in Juuapajoki, north of thesouthern city of Tampere at about 11:50 local time,media reported.

The two pilots, who were on a routine trainingflight, ejected safely and were uninjured and no-oneon the ground was harmed.

SINGAPORE, 22 Jan— Tiger Airways made its debuton Friday on the Singapore Exchange, becoming thefirst Asian carrier to be listed in five years.

Shares in the budget carrier opened at its initial publicoffering price (IPO) of 1.50 Singapore dollars (1.07 USdollars). They rose to 1.58 dollars before dropping back.

Singapore-based Tiger Airways said funds raisedfrom the IPO would go mainly towards financing thecarrier’s expansion plans in Asia, which is expectedto become the world’s biggest travel market by 2020.

Tiger Airways raised 247.7 million dollars in grossproceeds from the IPO and planned to set aside 166million dollars to buy new jets.

PORT AU PRINCE, 22 Jan—An earthquake measur-ing 4. 9 degrees on Richter Scale shook Haiti on Thurs-day, producing panic among the inhabitants and thesuspension of the rescue works.

The US Geology Institute said that the replica ofthe 7.3- degree earthquake that shook the country on12 Jan had its epicentre located 65 kilometres south-west to Port au Prince, Haiti ‘s capital, with a depth of10 kilometres.

BEIJING, 22 Jan— More than 90 percent of residentsinterviewed for a poll are hoping for the first-eversmoke-free World Expo in the history of the 159-year-old mega event, which kicks off in Shanghai on 1 May.

The Fudan Media and Public Opinion ResearchCentre interviewed 509 people, of which 93.5 percentsaid they hoped smoking, tobacco commercials andpromotions would be strictly prohibited at all Shang-hai Expo 2010 pavilions.

They also felt smoking should not be allowed inrestaurants or shopping centres near the Expo area.

Zhou Baohua, a professor at Fudan University whoheaded the survey, said that the results are in line withtheir earlier estimation.

The Tatmadaw is a national force borntogether with the history of our independencestruggle. Since its birth, the Tatmadaw has thetradition of brilliantly standing by our nation andpeople. It is the people’s Tatmadaw, born of thepeople and serving the interest of the people.

Our nation regained independence andbecame a sovereign state again due to theTatmadaw’s historic independence struggle.Moreover, our people were freed fromsubjugation and have become proud citizenswith self-determination. The Tatmadaw has beenconstantly safeguarding the lives and property ofthe national races. Whenever the nation is on theedge of losing her sovereignty and the publicsecurity and stability in danger, the Tatmadaw isalways in the forefront safeguarding the nationand the people to be free from every danger. Wemust acknowledge this endeavour.

Today, the Tatmadaw is the main nationalforce of our country and people serving as thevanguard paving the correct national path towardsthe new democratic state. It has laid down and isimplementing the seven-step Road Map inmarching with greater momentum to democracygoal in accord with the wish of the people. Inaddition, it is strengthening peace and stabilityand boosting progress. We can see that it isbuilding infrastructures in the political, economic,social, educational, health, transport and othersectors essential for national development.

That is why our people have trust in andreliance on the Tatmadaw government. Ourpeople are fully supporting the Tatmadaw as theyare satisfied with the institution’s endeavours toensure peace, stability and progress in the interestof the public socio-economy. The people aretruly anxious about the recurrence of the pastarmed conflicts and violence. They disfavourany delay in or termination or destruction of theprevailing peace, stability, progress and socialopportunities.

So they with understanding totally accept thefact that the role of the Tatmadaw is of vitalimportance in further boosting the presentdevelopments and ensuring a peaceful and stabledemocracy transition. We are in no doubt that thecountry and the people will have a brighter futureand the country will be powerful in the futureonly if the Tatmadaw is strong. So, we love the

Tatmadaw and have trust in and reliance on it. Wehave a true wish to see a powerful and strongTatmadaw. We totally believe that the nation willbe strong only if the Tatmadaw is powerful.

Although we want the Tatmadaw to be strongand firm, we have noticed that there are still somewicked, narrow-minded people who want to seeit become weak and break up. They are a handfulof traitorous axe-handles bent on grabbing powerwithout considering others. They are resorting tovarious ways to see the Tatmadaw become weakand collapse and divert from the national politicalway so that they can seize power and serve theirown interest. But they are not likely to considerthe fact that if the Tatmadaw breaks up, thecountry will also be torn into pieces, and theentire national people, including that group ofaxe-handles, will be under subjugation again.They don’t seem to think about a string ofunexpected repercussions, either. Their power-craving acts are, indeed, detrimental to the Stateand the people.

The reason I am talking about the above-mentioned points is that these days, anti-government groups are committing subversiveacts by slandering the Tatmadaw in various ways.Since the last week of December, 2009, the BBChas been airing slanderous accusations with theaim of disintegrating the Tatmadaw. On 23December, the BBC broadcast that there weremutiny in three regiments under No. 66 LID basedin Pyay District of western Bago Division; thatthey were LIR-80, LIR-68 and LIR-75; all theofficers and other ranks did the acts after demandingthe solutions to the problems of their basic needs;and that they had not gone to work since 17December.

The BBC also broadcast on 29 December thatmilitary affairs security members surrounded No.77 LID based in Bago and barricaded its entrance

and exit as the privates of its extended unit putforward their resignations; that the units whereresignation letters were submitted had to suspendtheir operations and the privates were not allowedto go out and were kept under the watchful eye ofmilitary affairs security members; that how tosolve the problems was unknown but it was saidthat the resigned privates could face one to threeyears’ jail sentence.

On 3 January this year also, the BBC broadcastthat the soldiers of South-East Command resignedin masse; that there were resignations in MilitaryAffairs Security Headquarters in Yangon; andthat Tatmadaw families were worried that therewould be armed clashes as the situations of No.77 LID and No. 66 LID were tense.

According to the 11 January broadcast of theBBC, the previous night, in LIR-80 of LID-66where mutiny broke out last month, someshootings happened for ten minutes and threewere wounded. Among them, a sergeant wasseriously injured and sent to the military hospitalnear Ywataung, said the people of Innma Village.It was said that members of LIR-5 of militaryaffairs security went to LIR-80 to conduct somechecks but the latter denied. As a consequence, abrawl ensued and then shootings broke out. Thefamilies of Tatmadaw members of those unitswere getting worried about that. Since the thirdweek of last December, LIRs-80, 68 and 75 underNo. 66 LID had defied authority as they werefacing difficulties with their basic needs. So,military affairs security members surroundedthem for security reason. The BBC spread rumourthat shootings occurred at a time when theregiments defying authority were put at their easeas such acts still broke out.

BBC’s fabricated broadcasting on 12 Januarysaid that an injured sergeant of the Light InfantryRegiment No. 5 died at the hospital locatedbetween Innma Village and Ywataung; thatfailure to find the solution to the hardship for thelivelihood of service personnel of the LightInfantry Division led to the outbreak of mutinyand the shootings, and there would be no solutionto the problem, according to residents.

RIO DE JANEIRO, 22 Jan—Brazil has inaugurated itsfirst commercial ethanol-fuelled power plant amid ques-tions being asked about the global impact of increasedfeedstock production on food agriculture.

The ethanol used in the plant comes from sugarcane,but other biofuels being researched for ecologicallyfriendly attributes or all-weather use are using hugequantities of soy, sunflower and other oil seeds.

Although most of the crops used in feedstock for fu-els are grown specifically for the purpose, analysts saidacreage under food crops was falling internationally asentrepreneurs and governments allocated vast tracts ofland to feedstock. Brazil has announced extensive pro-grammes for producing biofuels from soy, sunflowerand other oil seeds, including diesel for export that canwithstand extremely cold weather.

The ethanol-fueled power plant in the state of MinasGerais uses a flex-fuel turbine that was converted fromrunning solely on natural gas to ethanol. The plant be-gan its test operations on 31 Dec and currently is goingthrough various stages of optimization, officials said.

Petrobras, the state-managed oil company, said theethanol project gave Brazil a clear lead in the globalquest for alternative, ecologically friendly sources ofpower generation.
